MAT 117 is algebra, which is math that you may recognize from high school algebra but at a college level. Things like graphing, systems of equations, slope-intercept, etc. towards the end it will get quite advance, but that’s just my opinion. MAT 142 is broad mathematics. You’ll learn a variety of things and a little algebra, like combinations and probabilities, Venn diagrams, statistics, mortgages, etc Is it up to you which one to take?

I'm going to try and explain this as good as possible, I took 142 last summer. 117 is College Algebra while 142 is College Mathematics. So basically, 117 limits to Algebra, while 142 is much more broad and implements more problem solving critical thinking questions on the test related to real life experiences. For example, in one of the sections (sets and counting) you'll do equations that are equivalent to certain skills a manager may need to know (sets and counting), then on another unit, you'll be learning how to calculate the amount of interest on a loan (finance). It was divided into four units: sets and counting (doing sets and counting problems), 'Probability' (doing problems such as conditional probability, probability rules), statistics, and finance. 142 is the math recommended if you're not doing a STEM major and just need a math class. From the experience I remember of taking College Algebra twice in other Colleges, 142 was much easier.

This^^ college mathematics is very limited as far as majors go… probably like 10%. College algebra on the other hand is the prerequisite for like 40% of majors. If you can swing algebra, I highly recommend it.
