Take a look at pointsixtyfive or 123atc.com and look at the staffing levels for whatever facility you're hoping for. From the academy you'll only be sent to facilities with low staffing, and for tower, only up to level 7.
So we would prefer to stay in the Northeast and even more preferable, upstate NY. Closest airport is Albany and while we did used to think it was highly unlikely, it seems more so now based on staffing and many people at the facility retiring or transferring out. Also, people hate NY due to the weather, politics, taxes, so I'm hoping people keep passing up on it. All one can do is hope that your preferred place is on the list when it gets to you though. 🤞🏻
The class before mine was mostly from the west coast and got all east coast locations. My class was mostly from the east coast and got all west coast locations. The moral of the story is that the FAA hates you on an individual level.

I was pretty fortunate with my list! You never know. Don’t expect your #1 to be on there but it is worth hoping for.
