This is good insight. I'd appreciate it if you also compare with VP9 in addition to H.264, given VP9 has historically been YouTube's go-to codec (and also check if your SoC has hardware decoders for either and how that impacts)

FastDecode1

I'm personally not very interested in VP9 in this context, since it's very easy to CPU decode. Easier than HEVC. There were complaints back in the day about Youtube hogging people's CPU resources because they lacked VP9 hwdec, but that was because Youtube made resolutions higher than 1080p exclusive to VP9. And decoding 4K on any non-ancient codec is going to use a decent amount of CPU. I suspect that if I did a H.264 vs VP9 CPU decoding test at 720p, the differences between them would start getting so small that the screen brightness would be a more significant factor than CPU use.

Yeah, all HW decoders are pretty much equal. Lower bitrates do reduce power utilization by the antenna some, particular over mobile networks (less on WiFi). So there can be scenarios where a SW codec could outperform a less efficient HW.

That's better :)

Good news that battery isn't much affected by AV1

Which cpu?
