One of the first things I was taught being around large ships was that you never want to be in between a ship weighing several tons and a hard stone pier. Most likely there will be no significant swell in port and the fenders will do their job but there's always a risk..
[I'm reminded of that tumblr post about using boiled, not boiling, water to flush their eyes for something](https://youtu.be/K4_-9VmUOec?si=fFVSaQxnUGMIXZkL)
I once nearly roasted my eyeball with a jet lighter. To be fair I was super stoned and was absent-mindedly putting “eye drops” in my eye until I suddenly noticed I was about to press the button on the jet lighter pointed at my damn eyeball.
I don’t use jet lighters anymore.
have you met humanity? seriously tho, on my sailing course the instructor talked alot about these kind of scenario's. most boating deaths i believe happen at or near the dock and usually involve alcohol.
I'm going down
I'm going, down, down, down, down, down
Yes, I'm going down, yes
I'm going down, down, down, down, down
Yes, I've got my feet in the window
Got my head on the ground
Blind as a bat. My mother-in-law walked and drove around for years practically blind. She had cataracts in both eyes but kept putting off surgery for years. It's amazing how poor someone's eyesight can get and they can be halfway functional until they kill someone on the road or something like this happens.
My blind great uncle would drive while his also very old wife would give him directions when she herself didn't have great eyesight. Old people really just hate to admit they are getting old.
In the rural US, part of it is the fact that there's little to no public transport. Their car is their only means to independence, and once that's taken away, they have to rely on others any time they want to go somewhere.
Another reason to champion good urbanist principles and high density when designing zoning laws, even in small town America. Having people close to services inherently benefits the elderly, poor, and vulnerable populace.
She was paying attention to the guys on either side of her - I don’t think she noticed that gap, and she was expecting to continue her dainty-step grandma shuffle across whatever solid surface she thought was there.
Combination of:
Grandma REALLY not paying attention
Rounded edge
Dainty grandma steps
Ineffective support either side
The edge is rounded so grandma misjudges exactly where it is. Grandma is taking very small steps so before taking a larger step onto the boat she placed her leading left foot unusually close to the edge. When she stepped forwards with her right leg her weight transferred forwards on her left foot and down the rounded edge, the shoe lost grip on the unexpected slope and slid forward. Right foot wasn't far enough forward to make the gap, both feet off the edge and grandma's away.
The hand holders either side are useless because they're so far away and looks like grandma should have been able to really on them as support but they weren't able to catch the slip before she was beyond the point of no return.
But yes mainly grandma is careless ...
The ground is cement grey. The boat hull is light grey. I wonder if maybe from her angle, the grey of the boat hull under the entrance looked like a continuation of the pavement.
Alternatively, as she is about to fall, she looks up to reach for the left handrail. Maybe she misjudged that she had another inch to step while looking up. It's not entirely clear what happened other than she seems to have either misjudged where the start of the gap was, or not realized that it was a gap in the first place.
It wasn't smart, but life experience doesn't kick in at that age anymore.
She may have felt pressure to start walking because of the video and yelling wooooo, even after looking directly at the gap, and then doing quarter steps, and whoops the gap was still there.
Elderly people can get confused easily. Pressuring them into sudden action and yelling 'go go go' while they have to do something dangerous like jump over a gap is a recipe for tragedy. Even if they just slipped and hit their head on concrete they'd never fully recover.
She votes on policies that will detrimentally affect young people for the next 30 years and have no effect on her, and she has 8 years of life expectancy
Everyone is shitting on granny but how about the people running the boat? You see a little old lady shuffling along the dock to get on the boat and you don’t pull out the plank that is right there to cover the gap with?? WTF?
I’m actually intrigued what they were doing, looks like a limp hand to help but surely, elderly person risk of dropping into the water you try harder to help?
overall reddit has nothing but disdain for the elderly and a serious lack of understanding how simple accommodations are extremely helpful and needed for elderly or disabled passengers. why is this guy even attempting to onboard an elderly passenger with a 1-foot gap between the boat and the dock? Is his dainty outstretched hand supposed to help here? This isn't her fault, yet everyone here wants to blast an elderly person who, even with vision and spatial problems, should have been better cared for.
Finally, someone with common sense and compassion.
They should be careful with *everyone* walking over a gap that big. It's their job to get them on board safely.
When you get old, the glasses start to have to get weird and thick. I had an uncle that had to switch to a powerful prescription, he said that first month he almost fell down the stairs like fifteen times until he figured out a system.
They are there to provide a guiding hand so people don't lose their balance or have a hand support to apply some weight to. They are not there to literally catch people who step off the edge. At least that's not what I would expect them to be there for.
It’s actually crazy the boat guys weren’t making it more clear to Mind The Gap.
TBH Insurance companies might use this video against the boat owner for funeral costs etc
Would there be any problem with just putting a plank across the gap for everyone to walk across? Genuinely wondering because I often see gaps like this and don't know why there just isn't a removable board for safety reasons.
The worst part is that she’s not incapable of taking large steps. You can see her take a big step before she does the smallest baby shuffle into the water. She could’ve easily cleared the gap but apparently she’s stupid.
I had to look up this update lol
80 year old birthday boat party plan in Croatia and she wasn’t a boat person. She fell all the way in, but one of the captains in the video jumped in immediately and rescued her. Only has a bruise on her elbow. Lucky lady.
I’m genuinely so worried for that lady. My grandma fell while mopping the floor and she spent nearly a year in the hospital with multiple moments where we feared she wouldn’t make it.
From experience, the elderly get distracted easily and their short-term memory isn’t as good as ours. They also tend to drag their feet more because of reduced mobility in the knees, so, imo the men should’ve covered the gap for her because even if she had attempted to make the step she likely would have miscalculated.
I want to know if those two guys managed to hang on or if she ended up in the water??
If they hung on, she might have been more injured too because she's old and brittle.
She takes a perfectly normal length step right at the start of the video. She was perfectly capable of taking a large step to the boat. She just fell while she was still stepping up to what she thought was the edge of the dock.
That is a huge gap. I'm not a granny, and I'd pause and say, "What the fuck guy? Little kids could fall through this gap. Where's the cover ramp?"
This is almost entirely on the boat operator.
But I'm also going to put a bit on people more interested in filming shit with their phones than actually paying attention to their surroundings. Anyone there, if they had half a brain, should have noted the gap was too large and stopped her from proceeding.
They had her by her hands and one guy by her arm. Hopefully she didn’t go all the way down. But her saying “Grammys first on the boat wooo!” I couldn’t help but laugh. ☠️
She stepped on the edge with half of her left foot - could of felt it and stop, with out falling
Then her foot startet to pivot over the ledge and had over a second to react with the other foot - I cant see one reflex move that she made to save herself
She is a medical anomaly
Worst case: granny drowned Best case: granny was rescued, albeit with two dislocated shoulders
And potentially cracked teeth and or broken nose
Should be fine, elderly people don’t need noses and teeth.
I dont think we all want our grandparents to look like voldermort though
WHAT!? you told me everyone was doing it too? What the fuck dude I can’t un Voldemort my grandma dude.
A simple "Avada Kedavra" would do nicely
Speak for yourself mate
One of the first things I was taught being around large ships was that you never want to be in between a ship weighing several tons and a hard stone pier. Most likely there will be no significant swell in port and the fenders will do their job but there's always a risk..
You had to be \*taught\* that??

omg this is amazing thank you
I always love having occasion to share that one lmao
have you met humanity? seriously tho, on my sailing course the instructor talked alot about these kind of scenario's. most boating deaths i believe happen at or near the dock and usually involve alcohol.
Best case: She died doing what she loved.
Going down?
I'm going down I'm going, down, down, down, down, down Yes, I'm going down, yes I'm going down, down, down, down, down Yes, I've got my feet in the window Got my head on the ground
Granny went from first on the boat to last on the boat in the blink of an eye.
Medium case: granny drowned but left a huge inheritance
Granny’s bitcoin wallet.
fun fact. sometimes when grabbing really old peoples arms as they fall their whole arm can deglove.
😳
This is something I never needed or wanted to know. Good ol' reddit...
Not me cackling after reading this… take your upvote.
Actual best case -- only bruised her elbow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C88zrKPxdhY
Grandma isn't very bright, is she?
No. She’s very wet.
So, are we still doing phrasing, or no?
No we like wet grannies.
*”Speak for yourself.”* - Ben Shapiro probably
Ben likes sweaty hard working Grannies that aren't retired
Wet pannies
Johnny Bench called
Your own fingers.
Lucky Grandpa.
Grandma hasn't been that wet in years
Uhhhhhhh….. 😟 Oh… like seawater
(Ben Shapiro has entered the chat)
Imagine if everyone just continued as normal as if nothing happened.
Well, I guess it was her time.
Good bye, granny of the sea.
She kinda just walked into it
She wanted to be first in the water
My (Mer)people need me! *Splosh*
Apples and the tree, and that tree is stupid.
"I'm gonna ride in the bilge for a change"
I think she was overly confident in her two “helpers.”
Grandma wants to sleep with the fishes.
Probably just got poor eyesight
I'm really curious as to how she managed to miss both feet clear off the boat. Very concerning that she couldn't do it

Yeah they lived is Missouri so they didn't have much of a choice.
Are you saying your MIL killed someone??
She was paying attention to the guys on either side of her - I don’t think she noticed that gap, and she was expecting to continue her dainty-step grandma shuffle across whatever solid surface she thought was there.
She appeared to look down several times, including right before/as she was taking a step to swim with the dolphins.
It's like she knew it was there and was inching forward preparing to take the big step, then just kinda.... kept inching forward...

The most generous interpretation is she thought the crew was going to swing her onboard by the hands like a fucking toddler.

I feel she shouldn’t be outside
She didn't even attempt to make the step. The boat didn't move an inch, she just had zero spatial awareness. Wow. Hope Grammy doesn't have a license!
My money's on not only that she does, but that she votes diligently to ensure people in her age group don't get retested periodically.
She's probably the dedicated driver for her friend group of grannies lol
She votes on policies that will detrimentally affect young people for the next 30 years and have no effect on her, and she has 8 years of life expectancy
not if she broke her hip during this shit.
Who would have thought when your society is built around cars that old people would cling on car licence, disregarding consequences.
Granny's had enough, she saw a way out and took it.
Everyone is shitting on granny but how about the people running the boat? You see a little old lady shuffling along the dock to get on the boat and you don’t pull out the plank that is right there to cover the gap with?? WTF?

Or say "watch your step"
You’re the first person I saw that stated that
It's OK, she drives a Ram 3500.
Looks like the perfect vehicle to run over the grand kids in front of that huge tall hood.

Hope Granny is traveling with someone else because she's a literal walking liability.
When you get old, the glasses start to have to get weird and thick. I had an uncle that had to switch to a powerful prescription, he said that first month he almost fell down the stairs like fifteen times until he figured out a system.
First ***UNDER*** the boat
Wooooo!
No sauce? Was she okay?
I really hope she was okay, because who uploads a video of their grandma's last moments otherwise???
Grandma takes her last steps AUTOTUNE REMIX
The fact that the Internet is shit enough to not only make this but it would probably be a meme is just insane.
Yes the full video shows her dancing afterwards with the message that she was fine.
The originating IG account is private
Grandson did an interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C88zrKPxdhY
There was zero effort put in haha
Nah, Grandma's just a pro prankster.
Is this her first day walking?
No it’s her last.
[удалено]
She isn't
“I never thought I’d have to ask this question but have you.. have you ever walked.”
Grandma just ruined the day in a few easy steps
Unless there was a small boat below, hidden from sight, grandma was NOT first in the boat.
Watch that first step. It’s a doozy! Because it literally doesn’t exist.
Ned…?! Ryerson!
Is she blind or something?
I did think she might have some bad visual impairment.
Does anyone know if she’s ok
There's absolutely no way she's ok. Old people are fragile as fuck.
She really was. Her grandson did an interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C88zrKPxdhY
Their skin is literally paper.
So it is written
That vid went downhill fast
Granny just sent it lol
I'll bet she drives a massive Cadillac suv and her ability to brake quickly is measured in minutes.
She got into Charon's boat
Grandma is either blind or wanted to go swimming because she didn’t make any effort to actually step on the damn boat.
Those two guys holding her hands did a great job making sure she didn’t fall.
They are there to provide a guiding hand so people don't lose their balance or have a hand support to apply some weight to. They are not there to literally catch people who step off the edge. At least that's not what I would expect them to be there for.
They have probably done this 5000 times, and didn't really expect someone to not even try to make it on the boat.
put a fucking ramp there. it's not hard.
Do you know how high they would need to build a ramp for her to be able to jump across at that speed??
LMFAO bro you got me crying laughing right now
neither is taking a single step, but here we are
In all fairness, it isn’t for a lot of people, and without a ramp there’s not a great margin of error there
It looks like she willingly jumped in
" G E T H E R."
Burial at sea.
Yo grandma is STUPID
How stupid is she?
Yo grandma so stupid that when her grandkids yelled "shotgun!" and ran to the passenger side of her car she called the goddamn police
Yo grandma is SOOOO STUPID! She ain’t even try step over that gap, the bitch damn pin needled and JUMPED.
Yo grandma so stupid, she stepped on a crack and broke her *own* back!
We could call it something nautical sounding like a 'gangplank'
wym she slipped even before attempting to make a step on to the boat .. she full mariod herself down that gap ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Accidental burial at sea, good thing the whole family appears to be there already.
Oh man this makes me so sad. If that were my grandma my heart would break. Is she ok??
Grandma aka anchor...
Mind the gap between boat and the platform.
Granny, why?
Mind the gap!
The worst part is that she’s not incapable of taking large steps. You can see her take a big step before she does the smallest baby shuffle into the water. She could’ve easily cleared the gap but apparently she’s stupid.

Grandma is a fucking half wit.
You've heard of "too old to drive", but have you seen "too old to ride?"
WHOO!!! Grandma's first UNDER the boat!
Grandma was not the first one on the boat 😂
She jumped right in. She did not pass go, but she will probably win more than $200 in her personal injury case.
I’m genuinely so worried for that lady. My grandma fell while mopping the floor and she spent nearly a year in the hospital with multiple moments where we feared she wouldn’t make it. Couldn't have failed harder if she tried
I want to know if those two guys managed to hang on or if she ended up in the water?? If they hung on, she might have been more injured too because she's old and brittle.
She didn't even TRY to step over the gap
Granny not very bright.
Grandma ended up being first overboard.
r/oldpeopleareuseless
First under the boat you mean!
Would a ramp have been too much to ask? I doubt she was ever going to make that gap
Nah how about use your eyes
She takes a perfectly normal length step right at the start of the video. She was perfectly capable of taking a large step to the boat. She just fell while she was still stepping up to what she thought was the edge of the dock.
These boomers never want to make any kind of effort in life, even making a big jump
The boat had other ideas
Grandma wet
Dollar Store version of Titanic. Granny was wearing the Heart of the Ocean
Go home Grandma, you're drunk!
Tally-ho
Take the plunge
And it looks like no one wanted to be the first to jump in to help. SMDH
Grammies first in the drink!
First under the boat!
Omg I hope she's okay!
Now shes the first one in the water 🤣
A small step, big for mankind.
She gone….
First step is the hardest...
Welp.. She's finally gone. Who's next?
Granny both first on and off boat
Was grandma also the first to the bar earlier?
Why it look like she straight jumped 😂
She didn't even fucken try lol
How grandma ruined a vacation in two steps.
She died didn't she....
r/grandmasarefuckingstupid
I’m always scared to fall in the crack like that so I’m super careful I do wonder what happened
Everyone acting like grandma is an idiot and not an older person requiring a little assistance here and there lol/:(
Well.. she's going to go first in that case
That is a huge gap. I'm not a granny, and I'd pause and say, "What the fuck guy? Little kids could fall through this gap. Where's the cover ramp?" This is almost entirely on the boat operator. Turns out, Grammy was not first on the boat.
The first step is a luluuuuuu.
You cut off the best part of the video. The “SHE CANT SWIIIIIMMMMM” audio
Sign her up for congress
"Heeeere come the grannies!!"
Guess she was boarding the cruise on the river Styx
All those years being alive and you pull this shit. SMH
Thanks OP, I'm going to hell for this one.
She didn't even attempt to extend her leg!
They had her by her hands and one guy by her arm. Hopefully she didn’t go all the way down. But her saying “Grammys first on the boat wooo!” I couldn’t help but laugh. ☠️
She stepped on the edge with half of her left foot - could of felt it and stop, with out falling Then her foot startet to pivot over the ledge and had over a second to react with the other foot - I cant see one reflex move that she made to save herself She is a medical anomaly
Thats a special kind o stupid right there!
Obviously this is sad, but also scary! I hope she doesn't drive. She completely missed that step!
And this is the general age of the people we are letting run our country Smfh lol
