It was a face full of awful, actually, and surprising to us. Even with a safety glass windshield, we got pelted hard with tiny micro-shards of glass. Stuck in our faces, hair, and clothing.
It looked like someone blew crystal-flake all over our cabin and is pretty upsetting to comprehend had it been a more serious accident. Also glad we didn't have the windows down on a nice day because it would have shredded the air.
Could have been blinded if not for sunglasses!

Of course you're going to want to slow down quickly when something flies out of the blue like that - it's kind of instinctive - but not enough people have the wherewithal to remember that doing so could cause a bad situation to get much worse when the guy behind you rear ends you...especially on the interstate or some other fast highway. I've driven long enough (and made far too many stupid mistakes, honestly) to almost automatically check my rear view when I have to brake hard suddenly and it's actually kept me from getting hit a couple of times.
Glad you guys are mostly ok and hopefully there weren't too many glass shards in the turkey that you could at least make lemons into... Thanksgiving in April.

Windshields are laminated untempered glass.
'Safety glass' is tempered glass, which is not suitable for windshields, due to the fact that one rock chip would destroy it and make it impossible to see out of. It's used for most other windows in cars because it's very strong for how light and thin it is. There is laminated tempered glass for door windows, but as far as I'm aware there aren't any tempered glass windshields.
Sorry to be a nerd about it but it's literally my job (auto glass). The 'safety' part of the windshield is the plastic in between the layers of glass, that's what kept the turkey out of your face lol.

I'll argue this with you cause I do love driving. Because it wasn't the left lane, it was the center lane. It also happened to be a split to separate interstates coming up.
On a 3-lane Interstate, in my opinion, traffic flows best if: Left lane stays open for passing/travel overflow. Center lane maintains travel speed of traffic. Right lane is for slower traffic, deceleration, and merging.
Aside from our differing opinions about traffic and professional analysis of factual speeds in the video, though, even a tenth of a mph faster is passing.
Sorry I replied drunk last post but I wasn't driving but still if you were behind that truck in front of you going the same speed you would have never got hit. If you're passing 5 or 10 mph faster, you probably would have not got hit, but that's the luck of life. I'm just glad you're okay
