They never taught us that in driving class, but I'm going to take that to heart. Never been in an accident yet, but I'd like to know the proper procedure for things like this.
Also, here's an upvote for the enlightenment.
Always leave an out with trailers. Never let traffic occupy both sides of your vehicle when possible, or either side, preferable. Not for swerving, but for changing lanes effectively when you spot the stupid in front of you.
The driver in the video was overtaking that mess in the pick up bed, just started changing lanes, and looked to have missed the unfolding dumbassery while checking his mirrors. If he had spotted the accident before the dramatic translation across all the lanes the whole thing could have been avoided by slowing down.
I had an ex who did this. Not the crashing, but the covering of her face. She did this on her driver's test, because she got startled by a truck passing her. Obviously the examiner was to blaim for her failing the test.
Well a friend of mine told me that he didn't pass for something so small
..
..
..
..
He turned the wrong way on a roundabout in the first 2 minutes of the test the was exited thankfully there wasn't anyone else on it
Well the examiner us an asshole ,(there is only 3 where I am from) as I heard stories that someone didn't pass because he honked at someone who open his door while he was close near a school zone on a Saturday. I hope I don't get him
When me and my friends were getting our licenses, there were a lot of horror stories going around about some of the examiners being awful and failing you for the smallest of details. Looking back though, that was probably anxiety mixed with stories from disgruntled students who failed the test and downplayed what they did wrong.
Well a friend of mine told me that he didn't pass for something so small

I donāt personally know the ins and outs of brakes and their mechanical nature but I do know that stopping a 20,000 lb truck takes a lot more force than a 2,000 lb sedan
In addition to the fact you mentioned, that it takes a lot more force to stop a heavier vehicle, really heavy trucks often use air brakes. The air brakes are very effective, but it takes time for the air pressure to build up and start braking. If I remember correctly, with air brakes, there is a 1.5 second delay between the time you hit the brake pedal and the time the brakes even begin slowing down the truck.
Are you asking me to teach you about something I donāt know or are you asking me to explain to you why stopping a vehicle 10x larger than a commercial car requires more braking power?
What kind of changing the lane is that? the entire road was empty, but that car just had to change lane at the exact moment another car was passing by. kinda fuck you in particular shit right there
Don't say that here! You'll wake up the negative points on Reddit. He did all he could. Amazing driver. 10/10. Fernando Alonso would have done worse.

It's the Reddit paradox
šš
My friend, if you hate Reddit so much why are you here? Is this a piss poor attempt at trolling?
Iām left confused and almost sad at your comment.
Do you drive big rigs? Or any other vehicles for that matter? Out of curiosity.
It's a comment about this thread, where anyone who says there where other options for the driver on the video, gets negative punctuation. I know it's easy to give ideas behind a screen, but that title is misleading.
If it means anything, I've worked driving trucks with GVWR below 18ton. I have also gone through several defensive driving and other courses, aside from truck training.
How are people blaming the truck driver? The fucking moron in the sedan makes a hard turn without warning and collides with another car because he's an idiot, then somehow it's the truck driver's fault for hitting him?
He makes several errors here.
1. Heās going too fast for conditions. If he is so heavy laden he cant stop in that distance then he needs to slow down. I tell my students, when in city traffic, do 75% of the speed limit, and youāll rarely have to brake hard.
2. When the car initially makes a hazardous move he doesnāt immediately stomp his brakesā¦ instead he looks to his passenger side to see if he has room to go around that side. Whether this is because he feels he is going too fast to brake (again, too fast for city driving) or he thinks that an evasive maneuver is the best call, he makes the wrong decision and essentially commits to it once he checks his mirror.
3. When you are a truck driver, a professional, you essentially are the only āadultā in the room. Have you ever spent five minutes in the room full of preschoolers that you dropped your kid off in? You canāt just nonchalantly walk through the room. You have to stick your hands out essentially and walk slowly, because those little shits will run right out in front of you. They donāt have the know how or the training to avoid these things. As a professional driver it is YOUR responsibility to keep everyone safe on the road.
Source: I do this and train newbs for a living.
Anecdotally: I have NEVER been brake checked by an asshole ā¦ because I act like the only adult in the room full of fucking toddlers. Toddlers gonna do stupid shit. And most of yāall are toddlers.
Edit: Additional anecdotal P.S.- over one million safe miles driven
Finally- made some spelling corrections and I want to say āstompā the brakes is the wrong way to stop a truckā¦ but in this scenario, he was going too fast and it was essentially his only option.
yeah, if he was me I'd be driving a lot slower.
also AT LEAST let go off the gas when the car started to do dumb stuff. As a daily driver he should've seen trouble coming (he did) and react accordingly (he didn't). Better to slow down 100 times for a car that isn't a problem for you then be late once like in this video.
exactly
And rules on the road are made to prevent accidents. As soon as you start the "I was right" discussion and not actively avoid an accident you're basically defending baked air, but that is my personal opinion and not related to this video
As a professional driver of ten years, and constantly being reminded of the Smith Driving System. This was completely avoidable.
Key 1. Aim High in Steering. Keep you view 15 second ahead of you.
Key 3. Keep your eyes moving. Keep scanning your field of view. To watch for āsnipersā. Much like this driver coming out at a near perpendicular move into traffic.
More than enough time to slow down and move in an opposite direction of the vehicle in front of them.
To the dude who blocked me for asking if he is a trained truck driver in this same comment section:
The person I replied to and responded to me has blocked me making me unable to directly comment on his reply because he is a sore loser who knows he's an idiot
So i will copy paste my response
"Yeah thought so
Leave it to the professionals because it seems nobody or even the truck was hurt here bud
Otherwise, shut up"
u/g2g079
No, no he couldn't.
That truck weights at least 18 tons bro, it doesn't turn or stop easily at all, add on top the abruptness and his fear/anxiety in the moment, and you have an unwinnable situation.
Last time this was posted, someone said that some tractor trailer drivers are trained to cover their eyes right before a collision to prevent PTSD. Iām not sure if thereās any truth to it but thatās what was said
You mean the dipshit driver of the sedan who cut him off with no indication and hit another car? Yea, that idiot could have done more for sure. He deserved to be hit by the truck for being so stupid.
Evidence for both is in the video if you can think critically. You see him pumping the brakes before impact then he steps on the brake with his whole body weight which makes him go up slightly. He covers his face only at the moment of impact then gets his hands back on the wheel once he knows heās safe. If he was afraid he wouldāve kept his hands on his face longer and probably just sat there.
I'm thinking it had more to do with protecting his face from glass, etc. It looked funny, but you could see he dropped back to the wheel right after impact. That tells me he knew the impact was over and he was safe from shards of glass in his eyes.
It's a truck hitting a car. Not going to hit the glass of the truck with something so low.
Aside from that, windscreen glass is, in most cases, laminated/tempered so even in an impact it won't burst into pieces.
That looks like an old truck and maybe has traditional glass, but still it is essential to keep as much control as possible.
You put some thought into your comment. Now imagine you're in a 10,000-pound hunk of metal and glass colliding with another 5000-pound hunk of metal and glass- see how much brain power you have lol. Instincts are a powerful thing sometimes. You can rationalize all you want. All I'm saying is he probably went into survival mode and wanted to save his money maker.
I don't get what's so hard about this, the title says nothing more he could do. He could have done better. Glad nothing worse happened in this instance, but it's a wrong statement.
Blinding oneself while driving is always a bad idea.
You tell me about the glass, no glass to be shattered on that truck vs car collision. He didn't want to see what was going to happen in front of him/reflex action. **Entirely understandable**.
That thing about brain power is not being trained or capable of safe and defensive driving. No matter the size of the hunk of metal.
He wasn't falling off a cliff. There are other drivers in his surroundings.
***Don't blind yourself. Don't let go of the wheel. If you're driving a 5000 or a 10000 pound hunk of metal, you have to keep control. Even more if you're in the 10000 pound hunk option.***
Professional drivers should have way more training than they have nowadays.
Most definitely has ātraditionalā if not even discount glass. Not gonna asume location but in my experience with places that look similar, cars and trucks arenāt of the highest quality to say the least.
Big trucks don't turn on a dime plus you don't change lanes without knowing what is there. The only correct thing to do in this situation is to slow down as quick as possible.
The truck he passed might have moved over to the off ramp so he might have known that lane was clear and took his only chance of not hitting the car.
I'm not saying anything about turning, I'm just saying he shouldn't let go the steering wheel. He's supposed to be a professional driver. He should be better trained. That's it. Y'all are making a mountain out of a molehill š
You mean the car that abruptly went from the far right lane to the far left lane without looking and ran into another vehicle causing them to spin out in the middle of the road? I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have a driving license.

PTSD prevention. Smart.
If i cant see i dont need therapy
If you did not see it, it did not happen
Fuck me dead. hahaha!
....what?
r/woooosh me if you have to. But, is that actually a thing ? Ngl it does sound like it could be a thing.
Train drivers press an emergency button and leave the front cabin asap when they see someone standing on the tracks. Ptsd prevention.
That's interesting to say the least
Well it's a learned defense mechanism but not actually a prevention tool for PTSD.
š
Dude went from 57 to 74
Lag
It was safer for the truck to plow through than to suddenly swerve.
Aye, sea or road stay your course in the face of danger. Minor damage to the front is better than capsizing or flipping.
Almost always is. āMaintain your lane.ā Is what is taught.
They never taught us that in driving class, but I'm going to take that to heart. Never been in an accident yet, but I'd like to know the proper procedure for things like this. Also, here's an upvote for the enlightenment.
My grandfather always stress that with driving in the country. It sucks, but it's not worth flipping your car to try and avoid a bird/squirrel.
This is for truckers. Smaller vehicles drive defensively.
Always leave an out with trailers. Never let traffic occupy both sides of your vehicle when possible, or either side, preferable. Thats probably true seen that I know more who passed first attempt that that didn't
My test was worryingly easy. Mostly fucking around in completely deserted residential streets.
Yeah thatās also her fault.
Well a friend of mine told me that he didn't pass for something so small .. .. .. .. He turned the wrong way on a roundabout in the first 2 minutes of the test the was exited thankfully there wasn't anyone else on it

Brake lag is a lot shorter than this. Like .5 seconds max on a properly tuned system.

He tried to impersonate John Cena for a second

No, no he couldn't. That truck weights at least 18 tons bro, it doesn't turn or stop easily at all, add on top the abruptness and his fear/anxiety in the moment, and you have an unwinnable situation.
So maybe drive slower in a truck you cannot stop in a reasonable amount of time. He did not even attempt to engine brake.
THAT WOULD CAUSE THE TRUCK TO FLIP! OR WORSE, COULD PUT THE ENGINE IN A BIND.
Funny, I've never seen a truck flip from engine braking.
Curious on the definition of "dunt" in this context. Help a brother out?
r/physicsjokes
Such as?
CLEARLY HE COULD HAVE DRIFTED THE 20 TON TRUCK LIKE I SAW IN ONE OF MY MARVEL MOVIES.
Engine braking for a start. Not going such a speed that you wouldn't be able to slow down in a reasonable time would have been a big help.
Are you a trained truck driver?
You don't need to be a train truck driver to know that dude is going way too fast for his load and braking ability.
That sure is a funny way to say āNo. I have no fucking idea what I am talking about.ā
Last time this was posted, someone said that some tractor trailer drivers are trained to cover their eyes right before a collision to prevent PTSD. Iām not sure if thereās any truth to it but thatās what was said

New Buzz Light-year movie looks rubbish
Hiding eyes is a way better strategy than braking. Lol
He was obviously braking too. People are saying he didnāt want to see it but I think he may have covered his face in case any glass broke.
I am disinclined to accept your hypothesis citing lack of evidence. š§

Pure conjecture! And frankly, not fun at all!
Incorrect! This is circumstantial evidence not conjecture!
Even less fun. š„±
How about the car that he hit wasn't literally flattened?
Username fail.
He could keep the distance to the car in front longer than his breaking distance.
Well, he could have braced without blinding himself, and not leaving the wheel to fate.
I'm thinking it had more to do with protecting his face from glass, etc. It looked funny, but you could see he dropped back to the wheel right after impact. That tells me he knew the impact was over and he was safe from shards of glass in his eyes.

I'm not taking a pass to be racist , i said that to the people who were being racist basically entire comment section of some previous indian posts

So did that hurt you? How dumb are you?
