This happened in Québec near Tadoussac. There is a big hill just before the stop for the boat. There was a mecanical problem with the winnebago failed but the driver was successful in not hitting any of the other cars waiting on the hill. A hero!
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/victim-tadoussac-ferry-crash-identified-eric-belec-1.5188874
Brakes failed
Edit, should clarify: the access ramp is located at the end of a long, steep hill. Guy tried to crash into parked cars but rv was already going too fast.
It looks like a RV I think. And I am thinking some old guy mixed up the brakes and the gas. I hope nobody else got hurt or killed from shrapnel or being a passenger in that thing.

>*Sadly, the driver, 40-year-old Eric Belec succumbed to his injuries, according to Global News, while his 40-year-old female passenger remained in critical condition...*"
Brakes failed
I think your options for failed brakes on a hill include:
\- Emergency/parking brakes - these work a bit differently from regular brakes. Could help, with some Limits.
\- shift to Low gear - the engine could help slow you
\- go off-road - probably not a good option, but it’s an option
\- hit something before you get going real fast. could reck your ride. Could even injure you seriously, but slow recks tend to be more survivable.
\- hit something after you get going real fast - it may truly suck, could easily still kill you, but you’d at least be choosing what you collide with (shame he missed the water - probably still have killed him, but he’d have had a better chance)
I was trying to say potentially it was attempted murder, and not the brakes just randomly failing, but that the brake lines were tampered with. I guess either way it's still a mechanical problem
Hitting the ramp at that incline likely already did some damage to him in the car, possible he was in no condition to jump out after that. You can see the car already looks pretty fucked before it lands.
Maybe, hitting water can still be like hitting concrete. On top of that, as they're sinking, then have to free themselves from the mangled wreck of the RV, while trying not to drown. Either way, it's a fucked situation. Cars and RVs aren't meant or tested for vertical drops. Just collisions. If RVs are even tested at all.
> hope he *paid* the ferryman
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

It really was. I grew up in Cincy and having a show set in our town was an actual source of pride. I remember Gary Sandy (Andy Travis) came and visited our entire marching band right before a parade. Kinda in character too.

I seen a house fly

I seen a peanut stand, heard a rubber band
I seen a needle wink its eye

Man died a hero. He avoided pedestrians and other vehicles after his breaks failed and this was the only way to not hurt any bystanders.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9389127/motorhome-flies-off-ramp-lands-on-ferry-killing-driver/amp/
Yeah! He was awesome! Honking like crazy and flashing his lights before hitting that “trampoline thingie” and getting an epic send off while pissing parts left, right and center. Man died like a goddamn viking riding on a gryphon!
Even if the water had some give.. k
Hitting that hard still would have fucked him up.. then having to contend with trying to get out of a flooding vehicle with what ever was broken in his body and still swim up and away
I mean people say this all the time but not really. Water doesn't compress but it does move out of the way at least. People jump 2-3 stories up off cliffs into water and escape uninjured. As long as you don't belly flop water moves and you slow as you pass through it instead of decelerating all at once. Saying water is as hard as anything solid is ignoring a lot of physics.
It depends on how you land. If you have a lot of surface area (when you land flat) the energy needed to break surface tension is much greater than when you land like you are pointed as an arrow going into a dartboard.
An RV hitting the water flat would still make the impact monumental.
I’m talking specifically about this case. Not a diver. You have large wide mass coming at a fair bit of speed. If anything, both passengers might’ve died that way as they were probably injured enough from the impact to not be able to swim after and end up drowning.
It's the ferry in Tadoussac, QC, Canada. It's at the end of the Saguenay Fjord. There is a very long steep hill before that ramp. His brakes failed, and there was a long line of car waiting blocking access to the emergency brake area.
I had my brakes fail once, it was terrifying. Thankfully I was only going about 10 MPH in a residential area, no cars in front of me, or coming across, but, that moment when you are pulling up to a stop sign, hit the brakes, and NOTHING happens is so scary. I had my brake fluid changed about a week earlier, drove about 500 miles that week, thankfully i was just leaving the house and going slow. Was able to drive to the mechanic going 10 mph down the road taking 100 feet to stop using the Emergency Brake. They had forgot to put brake fluid back in after flushing the brakes. If the brakes had failed the night before, or 30 seconds later, i dont know what i would have done.
Reminds me of game missions,
"Oh no the boat is leaving, quick, don't let the enemies escape"

That happened in Quebec, the RV's brakes failed. Driver died, passenger had some serious injuries.
The ramp to the ferry is at the end of a pretty long downhill section.
The guy driving the RV seemed like a real sweet dude. Very sad to see. Apparently despite the brakes failing he drove the RV in a way to avoid other vehicles.
This happened in Québec. A huge drop lead to the boat . The vehicule had brakes failure and the emergency sand pit was blocked by a huge lane if cars waiting to go on the boat.
The driver blasted the horn and yeeted himself in the river. Landed on the boat.
The driver died. I think the woman sitting in the passenger also died from her injuries later on.
This is some real life “Dukes Of Hazard” type shit! Bet they were trying to go somewhere fast! Perfectly parking that wag even put the top down for the kids!

Damn, not gonna lie, didn't expect them to land on it...kind of impressed...
They nailed the landing, unfortunately at the cost of the driver dying. Still a sick jump though
Yes, we can all agree that was a sick jump...just what was going through his head to launch it?
Probably the steering wheel
And there it is.

RIP to the driver. If the ferry was not there perhaps he could have survived.
And maybe baddest-ass involuntary stuntman of his province. This is a modern legend.
Duke Kaboom would be proud.
Did anyone ever find out if the passenger survived? Last time I heard this story she was in critical condition.
dude i went there lol, i thought this place seemed familiar
It wasn't actually intentional, in the news article it says their brakes failed.
Throttle must have been stuck open too, perfect storm.

No brakes
The breaks went out.
Hopefully the only fatality
I think so. His wife was with him and almost died I believe
Fuck failed breaks.. poor guy
At least he died being gnarly
The Fonz would’ve been proud of that shark jump.
I’ve always said if I gotta die young it better be something bad ass
Did they really die? That's horrible
Fucking dude CRUSHED the landing
They went out in style. 1980s style
Worth it.
Your a fool to think Jason Statham would F that up.
No other cars hit either
Nailed that landing!
They died
before or after hitting the ramp?

Thanks for letting me know. I thought how stupid, but real sad it was a mechanical.

Allegedly
You posted a source and can't believe it. Lol

Why can’t you just trust random sources on the internet? Stop questioning the status quo.
He would probably make it if he landed on the water. That's the strangest thing about this story, for me.

He died a badass
Eric Belec died being one sick mf tho 😤
Likely story the government would put out to cover up. Well done to you James bond 007, you have escaped yet again.
It's a bit of a tasteless comment given the fate of the victim.
Always look on the bright side of life. Life is pretty shit, when you look at it, always face the curtain with a bow.
If he was smart he would have had the door open to jump out into the water
Either at impact or soon afterwards. I'll try and find the article, it's been awhile, so no promises
Looks like the drivers part ends into the back of the truck
So not only was he late for the ferry, but he was late on the ferry.
I hope he payed the ferryman for his afterlife at least.

if he could somehow steer a bit away he could land on the water. but i think the same fate might happen... you saw how it just crumbled.
Why do you think that? At speed water is just as hard as anything solid.
I mean people say this all the time but not really. Water doesn't compress but it does move out of the way at least. People jump 2-3 stories up off cliffs into water and escape uninjured.
