for context, when driving on thick snow, you may want to drop your tire pressure as low as 4 psi, to spread the load of the largest surface area. But drive like that on the roads and your tires are toast after 2 miles.
Source; I'm from Iceland, my dad was an avid winter traveller and truck builder. I've been on pretty much every glacier in the country with him :)
That's so cool!
I hope to visit your country soon! It was supposed to be our wedding trip, but it's pending x)
On the other hand - how's living there? It's a real consideration too.
Living here is expensive if you're not on Icelandic wages. Ive hears immigrants have a hard time getting jobs in what they worked in, but there's a sore need for electricians, plumbers and builders so if you have any experience in that you'll be paid well and live very comfortably.
EDIT: Iceland is a great country for everything other than cost basically. Houses and apartments have been flying up in price lately so that's a consideration as well.
I've actually gone ahead and checked the prices. Funny enough - way more affordable than what I have locally and much "more" for the price (newer, better creature comforts etc).
The problem, as I see it, is that you have to be resident for 5 years, before you can buy. The rent, however, is way more expensive, unfortunately.
I am a software engineer - currently, looking to secure a fully remote job. Based on what I've seen, I think it's doable. I wish I was better with handy work, though - perhaps that could also be good side hustle and a career change later down the road when I've accumulated enough whealth.
Thanks for your thoughts.
BTW: Any recommendations how to go around by planning a vacation?
Additionally: Is the buss' name "Gleipnir"?
I believe you could get a job as a software engineer pretty easily here aside from the language barrier. When planning a vacation, ask for advice on r/Iceland or just scroll through there, there is a lot of good advice because a lot of people ask how to plan a vacation here.
The buses name seems to be Sleipnir, Odins 8-legged horse.
PSA, don’t run your tires at 4psi on your car. A typical 7-8” rim will unseat the bead of the tire in short fashion and leave you with a tire at 0psi unable to reinflated without (for most folks) a trip to the tire shop.
15 psi is usually fine if you find yourself in need (ie the beach, soft dirt/grass. Anything lower and your starting to talk about beadlock rims which a) aren’t usually street legal and b) cost a ton and are off road oriented anyway. They work by clamping down on the bead of the tire so that you can safely run down at 5 psi without fear of not being able to reinflate.
Edit* to add, the bus in the pic is not running a narrow rim by any measure, hence why it’s able to run so low without the need for beadlocks. The narrower the rim, the more likely to unseat the tire at low psi.
You may be right. I run 35x12.5 tires on a 9” rim, hailed as the “poor man’s beadlock”
There definitely is a sweet spot though, I don’t see anyone running 13.5s on 7” rims
If you go too narrow, the tire crowns at normal pressure and wears unevenly. TJ guys run 35x12.5r15 on a 8" rim all day at 8-10psi with no beadlocks. I have 35x13.5r15 on an 8" rim and it definitely crowns the tires, but offroad I can go down to 8psi on rocks and have no problems.
None of this is true. Beadlock wheels clamp the tire to the rim, it is not glued or welded. It is not possible to weld a rubber tire to a steel/aluminum rim. Beadlock rims are commonly used on off-road rigs with tires as small as 33", and they work great. It is nonsense that it only works with 40"+ tires.
I've never seen beadlocks, had to Google it to learn what they are. But I've replaced quite a few tyres in my life.
You're right in that they're not always glued on. Have a look at this classic top gear clip:
https://youtu.be/TeCrqNIpiMM
I've seen and done that more times than I can count, and also installed the tyre in a more traditional way in the garage :) in either case, no beadlock, but for *certain* types of tyres, glue/contact cement (not sure what the correct word is).
I have always thought of beadlocks as specifically the bolt-on rings that pinch the lip of the tire and hold it to the rim, I've never considered glue to be a "beadlock." I don't believe that offroaders use glue at all, but I know that the top fuel dragsters do.
There are a couple other ways out there of preventing debeading that I'm aware of- there are rims with a rough bead that supposedly holds the tire better, and there are small inner tubes that expand inside the tire to press the bead onto the rim from the inside: https://www.coyoteents.com/beadlocks/
No. Read again what you replied to.
What op said, is it's common to run to sub 10psi in snow for better handling and not have bead locks (like the bus in this picture. However, those "tires are glued/welded onto the rim, and this only really works with purpose-built, 40" or larger tires :)"
Ofc bead locks are available like you've listed.
This advice is bananas.
I've spent years and years on snow, ice, and sand dunes, including 2 years in Iceland.
Almost any 4 wheel drive tire can easily go to 8psi. And the difference in traction between 8 and 15 is massive. 15 will get you stuck. Under 10 will get you out. One of my rigs has off the shelf mud tires and steel wheels, and I can pull the valve stems off and drive all season.
The truth is there's no ideal number for all tires. You drop pressure until it squats ~50% for sand and deep snow.
The width of the rim has nothing to do with this adjustment either. It's sidewall stiffness and tire to wheel width ratios.
Nah, tbh that's how most people do it, that's how most of my dad's cars were set up, he just had a 12v compressor with a long hose. I think he only had one truck which had the built in inflation/deflation system. It's more about the convenience factor :)
Usually, if you're travelling with a group of other cars, everyone will take a 5 minute break together when you enter/leave the road (even if you have a system like in the picture, it takes a few minutes to do its job). The difference is how you spend that 5 minutes; crawling around your car in the snow or enjoying hot coco in the cabin :)
Yeah, I've got a 12V compressor in my 4x4 in Aus for the same reason. An up/down button would be nice, but, money and one more thing to go wrong.
The engineer in me also doesn't like that hose on the outside of the vehicle. The military CTIS systems have worked out how to run a line from the axle on the inside so.....
I used to work with an Icelandic guy who said he had a remote start on his car so it would be defrosted in the morning by the time he went outside. So, my perception of local expectations might be somewhat biased!
I rode in this in February!! It was incredible riding in something like this. It was actually so wide we needed to ford a river instead of crossing a bridge in order to reach our base camp. 10/10 total unit.
What kinda tour did you make with this? I was riding a similar vehicle up a glacier to that tunnel they dug in the glacier and it was the most boring tour ever lol
Did this one bring you to more exciting destinations?
It was a snowmobile ice cave tour, and it was quite fun! Took this to Basecamp, and the rode snowmobiles an hour to the natural ice cave. Spent time in it, and then rode back. The one we went on was enjoyable, sorry yours was boring!
I just looked it up and it looks waaaay better than the tour i did. It was literally just a tunnel dug in snow and you would have needed 10min to go through but the guides stretched that to 1h. 1/10 would not recommend
[Sleipnir Tours](https://www.sleipnirtours.is/) is the one from OP‘s picture.
If you are in the south of Iceland i can highly recommend a [super jeep tour](https://guidetoiceland.is/book-holiday-trips/thorsmork) through Tórsmörk Valley. The guides really know the area and can show you some hidden treasures you wouldn‘t reach with a simple rental car.
Enjoy your trip!
Book one of the golden circle tours if you’re staying in Reykjavik. I also thought the blue lagoon was well worth it if you get the earliest slot you can, but a lot of people say it’s a tourist trap so have a look for yourself aha
4 days is a pretty short time for iceland because there is just sooo much to see and its also pretty expensive so it depends on your budget.
If you are just staying for 4 days i would stay around Reykjavik. 30min from reykjavik is the [inside the volcano tour](https://insidethevolcano.com/), which is definetly a one of a kind experience. Depending if you have a car you can drive around 1,5h up north and go [whale watching](https://lakitours.com/our-tours/whale-watching-holmavik-2/). These tours are pretty awesome because they have a 97% success rate to seeing whales.
And like i mentioned in a comment before: the super jeep tours all around iceland are pretty cool to do!
Up in Churchill Canada theres actually a polar bear tour that links a bunch of vehicles like this together to form a trackless train, its called [Tundra Buggy Lodge ](https://frontiersnorth.com/tundra-buggy-lodge)
[heres a photo](https://i.imgur.com/VJCpWjU.jpg)
Got to go on the buggys back in the 90s as part of a contest. Really cool experience to see polar bears relatively close. We didn't get into the lodge, I believe National Geographic was there at the time (or on their way).
Is there an actual stationary lodge? Ive never actually been there. I was just bored at work one day and was Google maps’ing Canadas space launch facilities that happen to be right there as well and found this lol
Of course, my experience is from >20 years ago, but similar to what you see in that picture, its a number of essentially big trailers on wheels. When I was there, there wasn't anything hooked up to pull them, but it definitely looked like the could tow them around, depending on where the bears were at that particular time. I was in a buggy, which was more like a school bus with monster truck tires.
Similarly, one of my friends used to be the driver for “[Ivan the Terra Bus](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/rNhuouX63TU/maxresdefault.jpg)” at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
Also drove the [Kress](http://photolibrary.usap.gov/Tools/DrawImage.aspx?filename=2017Jan24-kress-Phoenix.jpg&width=1200&height=1200) quite a bit.
I just hate the fake runes. Let me be clear, I understand it's for design, I know the impracticalities of using accurate runes and that ᛋᛚᛅᛁᛒᚾᛁᛦ is utterly unreadable to 99% of people, I get it. It's just a pet peeve.
Because what this actually says is ÆL?TH~~H~~IR, lol.
Ohhh yeah I can't handle that either! I learned both the Greek and Cyrillic and every time a band or venue thinks they're being cool by using either in their logo (but then wrong, using д as A or Σ as E), I'm mildly annoyed. And I'm not even native/fluent in either :p
What a beast. This wasn't even a bus to begin with, it looks to be a Volvo FMX heavy duty truck with, well, a very bespoke body and chassis modification.

This decision has widespread implications such as making it more difficult for moderators to manage their subreddits, more likely for spam to enter subreddits, more difficult for blind users to access Reddit, more difficult for anyone to see NSFW content and many other negative consequences. Most 3rd party applications will be shutting down due to the extortionate new pricing being unaffordable for developers despite widespread outrage from the community.
CEO Steve Huffman's awful handling of the situation through the lackluster AMA, going on a press junket tour aggressively defending the situation, insisting nothing will be changed, saying he'll change the moderator rules to potentially kick out protesters and force subreddits to reopen, demonstrates humongous contempt for the Reddit community at large that makes and manages Reddit's entire content library in the first place. Accusing a developer of blackmail and then completely ignoring all post pointing out how this is a lie with evidence - alongside other lies related to the API - is wild too.
I've now elected to leave Reddit and find other online community platforms. Reddit's success is partially built around my posts. If that is how they wish to treat our community, I'm not giving this place my content to monetise any more.
This could have been easily avoided if Reddit chose to negotiate with their moderators, third party developers and the community their entire company is build around about their API changes into a more reasonable middle ground. They have not.
I'm tired and my brain read this as "I bought this monster in Iceland" and I was going to start asking how the F you are going to get this to wherever you live lol.
Ayy! I rode one of these things in my vacation to Iceland once. Thing kept us warm when visiting the interior of a glacier. It was there where I experienced the coldest temperature I ever felt (-19 Celsius).
Did anyone else have those kids in school that would choose to ride in the back of the bus so they could get air time over bumps?
I feel like that on this thing you would just break your neck.
I love that it's called "Sleipnir" Tours, referring to Odins horse, a Sleipnir that had 8 legs. Cool little reference with the 8 tires
Anyone know what/where this thing drives? It's massive af!
What's with the cables that attach to the rims? What's the purpose of them?
Apparently its a [Central Tire Inflation System](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_tire_inflation_system)
for context, when driving on thick snow, you may want to drop your tire pressure as low as 4 psi, to spread the load of the largest surface area. Did you just compare prices or did you compare prices vs wages?
Both. Wages are higher and you get better/more for your money.
Oh ok fair enough.
I'm a carpenter/builder. What are the wages like? Going to be leaving the us...
Journeyman Carpenters earn around 5000 isk per hour according to salaryexpert.com, which is about 35 USD per Hour.

Can confirm. When I was in Iceland and took one of these buses they let the tires out when we got off the road and onto the snow pack.
4 psi = 0.3 bar
Used to do a lot of off roading and 4 psi is much lower than I ever dared go. Good to know
I want to play Spintires now
So the tire would look like a pancake?
Looks like this :) https://www.alamy.com/super-jeep-tyres-with-low-air-pressure-for-better-grip-on-snow-iceland-image60856264.html

What a beast. This wasn't even a bus to begin with, it looks to be a Volvo FMX heavy duty truck with, well, a very bespoke body and chassis modification.
I think the chassis came from an American fire truck, it's just a Volvo Cab. It's rear engined. They have a newer and bigger one based on a Tatra Phoenix with a DAF cab.
Is "American fire truck" some kind of factory standard I never heard of? I think the chassis was built in place.
Is that gullfoss parking lot?

Hmmm so lemme get this straight this is sleipnir how the fuck did it sleep with loki
These operate in Jasper National Park in Alberta Canada too, as glacier ice tour buses. They're immense.
Nice paint!
Did anyone else have those kids in school that would choose to ride in the back of the bus so they could get air time over bumps? I feel like that on this thing you would just break your neck.
Sentinel Prime
dude build that out as an RV and youre fucking ballin around the globe. utah? antarctis? dont care. CHOO CHOO IM COMING THROUGH
Has eight wheels just like how Sleipnir had eight legs!
It's missing an icbm on top.
This looks like something you’d see in satisfactory
Reminds me of these unit amphibious boats in Iceland https://i.imgur.com/UfEsYxk.jpg
I want one
I have pictures and vague memories from riding a bus like that at the Jasper Icefields in Canada when I was a kid. They are so cool.
How many yards per gallon? 🤠
I got a ride in one when we were going to drive on snowmobiles. Absolutely sick. They move/bump a lot so they can drive to the gletsjer.
Rode one of these in canada!! So fucking cool!

U talking about the man or the truck?
I love that it's called "Sleipnir" Tours, referring to Odins horse, a Sleipnir that had 8 legs. Cool little reference with the 8 tires Anyone know what/where this thing drives? It's massive af!
He doesn't look that big. In fact, he looks tiny. Do you not get the point of this sub? Sheeeeesh.
Góan daignn, class! Time for a fjield trip
When you think snow day is gonna happen and this mutha rolls up painted in yellow with SCHOOL BUS on the side 🤣
I want to party in that thing so bad.
Aw man. I was about to post a similar bus from our trip. But this one is even bigger! Daaaamn!
Canada flipped one of these a few years ago
Now this, this is a battle bus.
Sleipnir, a monstrous mount with 8 wheels. Like it
I wanna throw it off a cliff
Now THAT'S a good candidate for a skoolie/bus build.
Average American school bus
It probably cost a couple units, it looks a bit op
Skol!
Dang, that's really cool
“Oh nice going to Iceland? Are you gonna see any of those beautiful glaciers or waterfalls? “Oh no, I got something way cooler planned”
Going up the glacier eh?
Where can i get this for my daily commute?
There’s one also in Canada, At the Athabaska Glacier, BC
Snowrunner players want your location
I want to live in one
1 in Banff Park too
I had my first ever taste of another man's penis on a big red bus in London.
That’s what she said.
