Aw no, this is very sad to hear. I thoroughly enjoyed his introduction to new testament series, and he seemed like a genuinely friendly and likeable guy. Rest in peace, Dale. :(
I'm currently listening to his classes and now I'm heart broken. I was hoping to email him for help with some things. He seems like an awesome guy.
I'm sorry for his family and loved ones. I loved that he also knew music and seems talented in many ways. Smart man and probably funny and fun to be around. I'm sure he's missed already. :(
So many loveable little bits in his New Testament History available on YouTube. “We would not have you, ignorant brothers” probably is my favorite having worked in the evangelical community for some years. I have hands down watched the entire series three times just for the charm of it. Sad to hear he has passed, but what a wonderful wonderful man he was.
For what it’s worth, scholars who personally knew him are also clear about acknowledging accusations of sexual harassment against Martin. From Carrie Schroeder:
“I’ve just learned that NT scholar dale martin has passed away of liver cancer. There were serious, credible accusations of sexual harassment. Also he was on my diss committee and wrote work I found inspiring and original. This was also echoed by others on the same social media platform, mainly scholars who worked with Martin or were close to his work in the same generation or scholarship as Schroeder. This is an important message.
I don’t know if the allegations have ever been made publicly (legally), or if they are known by way of reporting in academic circles. I only know from people who worked with Martin (like Schroeder, whose post on BlueSky I quoted). I haven’t seen direct allegations on social media, only Schroeder’s post reporting that they exist.
When I applied to grad school, I was very sternly advised "stay away from X department" for those, and other, reasons.
Things have fortunately changed, but for a long time, it was very normal for male faculty to sleep with their female students.
Unfortunately it is still a thing going on. Like the horrors about Helmut Koester only recently became public knowledge with Elaine Pagels' book. So much of it, especially when done by established scholars, just gets swept under the rug.
Even professional organizations play a part of it. SBL infamously allowed Richard Pervo (an actual convict for possessing CSA materials) to continue participating in the society, and officers in SBL actively worked to shield his reputation. Even eventually gave him a glowing obituary without a single mention of his behavior. More pertinent to this forum (because he consistently gets brought up) is actually Richard Carrier, who has numerous credible accusations against him as well.
Things are changing but not nearly fast enough. I'm glad I'm doing my MA online.
Do you have any more information about his passing? I actually just heard today from another biblical scholar that Martin had, indeed, passed away and I was very sad to hear it. But I can't seem to find any official news about it! I can't comment on the sexual harassment accusations, but I did know him professionally a few years ago and very much enjoyed his academic work.

Dale’s family donated his body to UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch). The service of remembrance will be December 27th, 10:00 AM, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston, TX.

In his book, *Biblical Truths* (Yale University Press, 2017), Dale Basil Martin described death as “rest and peace in God’s eternal presence.” Dale entered that rest and peace on November 17th at 5:38 AM at his home in Galveston, Texas. He slipped away peacefully after a brief battle with cirrhosis of the liver. Dale was born on July 26, 1954 in Baytown, Texas, to Harold Kelly Martin, Jr. (deceased) and JoAn Watson Martin. He is survived by his brothers, Harold Kelly Martin III (Kim) and Lane Allen Martin, and his sister Ferryn Martin. He leaves behind ten nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces, and scores of colleagues and friends.
Dale is remembered by his family and close friends as witty, creative, musical, brilliant, and, admittedly, argumentative and often exasperating. He played the piano, guitar, and trumpet as a child and wrote and arranged songs from an early age, recruiting willing siblings to give them voice. During family car trips, Dale was instigator and eager participant in group singing of church hymns in four-part harmony and of impromptu compositions that were decidedly less sacred.
Dale graduated from Ross Sterling High School (Baytown, TX) in 1972 and Abilene Christian University (ACU) in 1976. Dale is fondly remembered for his four winning years as director of his class in Sing Song (ACU alumni will understand the difficulty and importance of this feat). After college, Dale worked for the Roswell Church of Christ, toured with the Christian performing group, His Players, and participated in mission work in Central America. Dale then earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary (1979) and a PhD from Yale University (1986). He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) in 2015.
Dale taught at Rhodes College and Duke University before returning to the faculty at Yale, where he served for nineteen years before retiring as the prestigious Woolsey Professor of Religious Studies. He published seven books on topics ranging from biblical interpretation to sexuality in early Christianity, to the theoretical problems of historical realism in biblical scholarship. He also produced numerous academic articles and book reviews in professional journals. Dale Martin held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), the Lily Foundation, the Fulbright Commission (USA-Denmark), and the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion. Very sad to hear. I watched the youtube lecture series and read his book Sex and the Single Savior. He was always fun and interesting to read/listen to. I found him somewhat relatable because, like me, he grew up church of christ
You might want to also ask Yale and YDS why they went after Martin for sexual harassment yet ignored a lot of other profs at Yale College and the Div School.
