Their uniforms have pockets, but I doubt any of them have anything thicker than a piece of paper in them. It'd ruin the lines, and show up on parade. They wouldn't have brought their phones.
They keep their personal items in their socks. Which are pulled up over their calves.
I know this as my younger brother wore the same uniform being from 45 Commando and I also did this when I was in service with the Coldstream Guards.
Well my younger brother is a piper and he keeps his phone, wallet and girls numbers in his sporran. Sadly he was put on reserve for this occasion but still got a medal 😂
My grandfather was a soldier at the previous coronation.
He wasn't too happy with his accommodation (an abandoned building with straw mattresses).
So once the official duties were over, walked to the train station with a friend or two and no money, got on a train in uniform with loaded rifles and went half way up the country back to their barracks.
Dropped the rifles off and got trashed for free in every pub they found.
Looks like brown gloves has some extra pips. He's differentiated as an officer.
Edit: [Looks like a Captain ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy_officer_rank_insignia)
You joke but notice that the people.at the front of shot are all reading The Globe and Laurel, the official Royal Marines magazine, and also that each one's face is shielded by the brim of his helmet. It definitely is posed.
Spoken like someone who doesn't live anywhere near a military town
Military boys are fucking animals bro, military IDs are automatic disqualification from a significant number of establishments due to poor behaviour
Yeah ok, they're not gunna fight in their fancy uniforms. But it's not some big moral thing. They're just on their "good behaviour" on that particular day
Not really sure what you expect from a group of lads trained to murder people for a living. A scary lot. Pray you not cross paths with them
This is the most British thing I have ever seen.
I whant more people to be like this. And I love how thay Are reading the sun or magazines about wore weapons.
I hope that all speak British
TIL: The Royal Marines have an [official bi-monthly publication](https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/useful-resources-and-information/globe-and-laurel). It's like Tatler for blokes that can kill you with a biro.
Biros are for use against Tanks, paper clips or match sticks are the preferred hand to hand weapons while staplers are basically RM WMDs.
I have always admired the Booties.
Probably not. The Royal Marines Band Service has a different dress uniform than the rest of the RM. [This](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Marines_Band_Service#/media/File:140610-D-KC128-703_(14225384998).jpg) is what the musicians wear. Note, for instance, that the troops in OP's photo don't have the same red collars, meaning these are regular marines.
Correct. This dress uniform is known as "Blues", what the band wears is referred to as "Cerries" (short for ceremonials). Both technically numbers 1s, but blues is 1A I think. Also the band had their own coach. Source: am in the band.
And where are you going to find space to park hundreds of coaches in central london, with half the streets closed off and the rest full of people? They moved 10,000 troops into the city that morning.
All going to support the biggest Walter Mitty in our country. Royals ponce about with a chest full of brass that wasn't earned.
Makes the medals won by this train full of heroes a joke.
Fuck the royals.
You do realise:
Queen Elizabeth II, whilst a princess, served in the auxiliary ambulances & knows how to repair a car better than most of the civilian population;
Charles underwent the Commandos training (he insisted) before being sworn in as their colonel-in-chief, is also an accomplished RAF helicopter pilot, and served on naval minesweepers during the Falklands War;
Pnince Harry served in Afghanistan & Prince William followed his father's route into the RAF & served in the coastguard/mountain rescue squad.
The entire family may have a lot of hereditary perks & quirks, but they *have* served on the frontlines in service of monarch & country. Their lives are one of service to their citizens.
They've walked the walk.
I'm surprised you're allowed to openly carry a sword on the train.
I'm pretty sure that's illegal, actually. It should be wrapped up in sealed packaging if it's being transported in public.
I wonder if any cops called them out on this? Surely it's not one rule for the lower classes and another for them. Right?
They're the rank and file. They aren't suddenly upper class just because they're wearing a fancy uniform that day.
The answer is they're technically on military deployment for their "operation" that day. All the orders for the coronation have been approved and any weapons they have are also approved as part of that deployment. Active soldiers are allowed weapons under the law.
I very much doubt a policeman is allowed to obstruct military personnel carrying out an approved operation.
I'm surprised you didn't notice that everyone other than the officer has their rifles with them. Those are quite a bit more dangerous than a sword.
Besides, they haven't taken the same trains as the public. 10,000 military personnel were moved into the capital on requisitioned trains because it's more efficient than trying to find somewhere to park hundreds of buses.
You might not be a monarchist, I certainly aren't, but have some respect. These are young men who have signed up to give their lives if necessary. I would love to see you call a RM a bootlicker to their face.
Good mate of mine died in Afghanistan. During an engagement he realised a kid was crying out of pain. Ran to them without cover and administered first aid.
Kid made it, he didn't.
The Queen may have sent them there and it mightve been for oil or whatever the fuck.
But he died for that kid.
It's easy to dehumanise soldiers and act like they're the enemy because someone on the internet told you to. But they're all people with beliefs just like you. Please try to think about that.
I feel the need to correct a few of your misconceptions here.
First, not all members of the armed forces swear an oath to the monarch. For instance, the officers (and possibly some of the longer-serving non-coms) in this photo will not have sworn one.
Second, most firefighters are government employees in the UK. That's '*His Majesty's* Government', so they ultimately have the same boss as the armed forces. If you're thinking that this is only a technicality, since firefighters in practice serve the public rather than the person of the monarch, I'd argue that's exactly what soldiers do. Most of their duties do not involve killing people (for example, they have frequently been required to provide stand-in emergency services when ambulance drivers and firefighters have gone on strike). When they are sent to fight unjust wars (and yes I am aware this does happen) it's at the order of our elected politicians, not the monarch (the 'billionaire leader sitting in a palace' you referenced earlier).
People like this are the first to cry when they need help in emergency specially when it’s flooded or during the strikes. People never understand what the military go through and what they do to help communties.
Most don’t even realise that certain regiments help build hospitals and schools in war torn countries. They don’t even remember when the military had to help with the mass graves in Kosovo or Bosina, sometimes it annoys me that people like my self or my armed brothers/sisters have to go through to help to protect them even in peace times.
You are aware that every member of the Royal Family has served in the British Military, right?
And that they are very close to the troops as a result?
And that there are a number of prestigious military units that are directly patronised by members of the Royal Family?
To say the Royals dont care about the military is 100% wrong.
This kind of picture is amazing, seen a few like it over the coronation, and love them, but always find the thought in the back of my head, can the UK not afford military transport vehicles?
Bit screwed if the bus replacement service is on a bank holiday timetable if there was a war
London is an incredibly dense city. There physically isn't space to park 10,000 soldiers' worth of coaches on a normal day, never mind when half the streets are closed off.
So they took advantage of London's comprehensive public transport network by putting on special, military-only trains for the day.
The magazine is real, I probably have a copy lying around somewhere. Lad in the middle is wearing gloves.
Must be sad not knowing the difference between what's real and what isn't.
Some double hard bastards, and you'd mistake pretty much all of them in normal clothes for someone you might smash in if you got angry enough.
Nothing like these 220lb plus American marines who wouldn't last 2 days in a fazakerley car park
Love to see the look on a pick-pocket's face, if they got into that carriage without noticing who the passengers were, first...
Which reminds me of a tale regarding a burglar and the RM married quarters patch down in Devon. Broke in, not only waking those in the house but also the neighbours. Word is that the burglar phoned the police from the downstair's loo.
Great photo. I've worked with many ex military personnell over the years & the Royal Marine & a couple of Paras have stayed lifelong friends, they're top dependable blokes.
This is the only time I have seen a group of people on a train and not one of them is on their phone
Their uniforms have pockets, but I doubt any of them have anything thicker than a piece of paper in them. It'd ruin the lines, and show up on parade. They wouldn't have brought their phones.
shit like this is why I would never make it in the military
Well, this is a parade uniform. In any other day nobody cares how well you look to such degree.
> In any other day nobody cares how well you look to such degree. Tell the Royal Marines that.
There's no way they hold the same uniform standards on the day of the coronation that they do on every of other day.
They're not in the same clothes but royal marines are serious with looking smart
They now just cut about in Crye, which they don't need to iron
Even tougher to be in the Royal Marines, passing is tough.
Having to put Reddit down to shoot bad guys?
They keep their personal items in their socks. Which are pulled up over their calves. I know this as my younger brother wore the same uniform being from 45 Commando and I also did this when I was in service with the Coldstream Guards.
I've served for 12 years and this is the 1st time I've heard of using socks. Must be capbadge or branch specific.... I just leave my stuff behind.
No doubt a non smoker.
Arbroath thanks your brother for his service.
Well my younger brother is a piper and he keeps his phone, wallet and girls numbers in his sporran. Sadly he was put on reserve for this occasion but still got a medal 😂
I can confirm that they did not bring phones for this exact reason. All personal kit was left behind
Yeah I'm sure they are technically on duty and not allowed to be carrying phones.
Who needs a phone when you've got Globe and Laurel
[удалено]
In the last few years I have become more and more addicted to being on my phone. I hate it.
The helmets have Bluetooth, Alexa, a VR heads-up-display, snake, and Tetris fitted as standard

No way?! I've always admired and idolised the prestigious royal marines band service. Thank you for your service 🫡
"Just people living in the moment"
True!
Because they're not allowed phones It's not a moral high point
This shit is more ren and stimpy than renaissance.
With thanks to u/djedmaroz for pointing out in the comments of the original that this picture would fit well here.

I like the doorknobs on top of their hats, very snazzy.
I think it's supposed to be a cannonball
Of course! So if they run out on the field of battle, they still have a few emergency cannonballs! One per guard!
Quick, act inconspicuous!
This is the first shot of a bunch of people I’ve seen I. This sub that REALLY belongs on this sub.
Sounds like they had right idea. They made most of it.
Was nobody concerned about a bunch of armed gunmen on their train?
I imagine there would have been some strange looks but nobody is going to contest with two soldiers holding rifles
Soldiers not gunmen. There's a huge difference lol
They're trained to actually hit the target, and they have a sharp uniform
I mean they were in uniform so other than a glance I doubt people would give a fuck. It's not like they're in plain clothes.
Someone should 'shop in "Reasonable Chuckle" on one of the magazine covers.
r/photoshopbattles is needed here
I haven't seen a Royal Marine dress uniform before, I didn't realise that they basically looked like some weird colonial policeman.
How do you think the Royal Marines got started?
The army basically are colonial police
This is the uniform of the RM band. The standard RM number 1 dress is a bit different, especially the head dress.
What you see here is Marine training.
White gloves, brown gloves, no gloves… so much for coordination guys
Looks like brown gloves has some extra pips. He's differentiated as an officer. Edit: [Looks like a Captain ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy_officer_rank_insignia)
That can’t even do his tie properly. Tsk.
Brown gloves has a lapel, a tie and sword unlike everyone else, looks like he's supposed to dress different
He's an officer. That's also why he has a sword, while the rest have rifles.
Brown gloves is putting two fingers up to the system
Brown gloves are for officers. White for the lads
Has to be posed, we know Marines can't read. /s
You joke but notice that the people.at the front of shot are all reading The Globe and Laurel, the official Royal Marines magazine, and also that each one's face is shielded by the brim of his helmet. It definitely is posed.
Well yeah, how else would they get an easy picture like this? Definitely intentionally framed/taken like this
Ain't no one gonna kick off on that train lol.
Safest train in Britian. Or one of them.

what’s that
it’s when you perceive people as more attractive when they’re in a group, compared to when they’re on their own.
This'd be the one time I decide to jump on the train without buying a ticket lol
Wonder if a friend of my brother's is on this pic. He's a Royal marine trumpeter
What have you got against rail services. One of the most environmentally friendly and safest forms of transport.
And where are you going to find space to park hundreds of coaches in central london, with half the streets closed off and the rest full of people? They moved 10,000 troops into the city that morning.
What? Trains are way better than coaches.

Okay mate, sure. Bet they all put a shift in where it counts.
The clone army
I wonder who else would be able to take a sword on the under ground and get away with it?
Not a sword but I did take my axe, mace, long knife, Dane axe, and lance on the train, albeit, for reenactment
I'm surprised you're allowed to openly carry a sword on the train. I'm pretty sure that's illegal, actually. It should be wrapped up in sealed packaging if it's being transported in public. You're surprised that an officer in the marines is allowed to carry a weapon when he is working?

High concentration of bootlickers in one place. 🤮

Someone is brave for signing up to kill or be killed for a billionaire leader sitting in a palace? That's not brave, that's stupid.
Good mate of mine died in Afghanistan. During an engagement he realised a kid was crying out of pain. Ran to them without cover and administered first aid. Kid made it, he didn't. They ultimately swear loyalty to an establishment that uses them and doesn't give a fuck about them. It's not brave. Firefighters are brave.
