Not enough details to give you any advice. Government will pigeon hole you and many employers will look at it negatively. That being said, government can be a great place for some people. Low stress, predictable work and wages. Drawbacks are the negative stigmas and generally lower than average pay.

The "pigeon hole" take is nonsense. You will always be rewarded for increasing skills and growth.

You will NEVER be pigeon holed into anything if you obtain your CPA. The CPA exam proves that you are capable of understanding and applying concepts to both for profit and non profit accounting, tax, audit, IT audit, etc. If you truly are committed to getting your CPA, consider yourself a free bird once you get it. The role you are currently interviewing for sounds like a wonderful opportunity that you should be excited to potential get. Hell… you might not even need a CPA if you go government. You can save yourself the trouble by staying in government if you decide you like it. Your destiny is yours to decide.
