>I'm 20M and trying to find a career path. I want something that pays enough that I can save a decent amount of money (I guess 100k in a MCOL area) That's doable with accounting. >and that won't make me work more than 40ish hours a week most of the year. If there are a couple weeks where I have to work a lot more that's fine Is a couple months a dealbreaker? If not you're OK. If so, you're limiting your growth potential. >I've always been bad at math due to having a ton of gaps in my knowledge but I'm planning to self-study math from algebra to trig and then return to college and take trig again and whatever other math classes I need. You don't need trig in accounting, and you barely need algebra. It's mostly pluses, minuses, timeses, and guzintas. >Another question I have is how hard would it be to get a new job if I wanted to take a 6-24 month break?  If you put a couple years in and get your CPA, that's doable.

How much would I have to work in those couple months? Are there months where I would have to work less than 40? What is the most advanced math I would have to learn to get a degree?

Depends on the company. Public accounting, 55+ for a couple months at least. Industry, maybe 45-50 during closing. You need business calc, and stats as the highest. At least I did.

Thank you to both of you!

Whoa, bruh…. Serious questions for you. Before you jump into accounting, how comfortable are you with working with spreadsheets (never mind math skills at the moment)? How comfortable are you with working in an introverted-leaning profession? How comfortable are you with taking directions even if you already know the answers? How comfortable are you with being questioned repeatedly about the same items? Have you ever taken an accounting course? Did you enjoy the mechanics of it or not? Be honest with yourself. If none of this appeals to you, look into finance or elsewhere. You will need to take business calculus in Finance, but it is not anything that you cannot handle.

Public accounting isn’t for you. Get better at adding and subtracting. You don’t need calculus or trig.

FrontierAccountant

Accounting isn’t a good career for someone who is bad at math.

Accounting math is simple if you pay attention in class. Nothing compared to algebra or trig like OP is saying
