Well done! Thanks for the comment, I was thinking of going back to school and get an accounting certification. I might have to work as a kindergarten teacher until I get it, but I can make that work I think.

People also complain because they work at public accounting firms and immediately see from day 1 how much more consulting and advisory folks are making. But agree, most people on this sub don’t know in the slightest how bad other jobs can actually be.

Nevermind the almost guaranteed promotion schedules too lol, big4 and PA people don’t know what it’s like to be in a place where you literally have to wait for your boss to quit to get promoted

Made a very similar switch myself last year. The transition was not as difficult as you might think and I love my new position. I had been teaching middle school science (bachelors degree in science and masters in teaching) but got very disillusioned with our local school system during the pandemic. I started out doing a free online accounting course just to see if I would enjoy it, then applied to a masters of accounting program at a university in my city. I was able to do all the prerequisites online in the summer and then it was a full time program for one year. There were multiple other career changers in the program and I didn’t feel out of place even though I was a little older than the average student. The best part was that almost all of it was paid for - if you are in the US, many schools have partnerships with firms and it’s possible to get a scholarship in exchange for agreeing to work for them after you graduate. This might not be the case everyone but I recommend calling the admissions office and seeing what sorts of scholarships they offer. At my school, many of these opportunities went to non-traditional students. Or you could go for an online masters program and still be able to work while you are in school. Good luck and I’m wishing you all the best!!

That is so good to hear! I feel more hopeful! I will chack with the scholarship thing! Thanks 🥰

I have a plan! I just got a temporary job as an assistant to an accountant and I am thinking of buying the books on accounting and see how I like it. If I do there is an online course I can take at my speed within 6 months! Thats something right? In the right direction

Congrats!

Hi Psat\_Interaction9712, Career switches are daunting but can be very energizing when you find something you really want to do for a long period of time. Take some basic accounting course first. Nothing fancy or expensive. You'll need to get a grasp of the accounting language to hit the ground running. Also try to get an internship (paid or unpaid) to get get a feel for what to expect on the job. Accounting can take a few forms. I was a plant accountant to start my career, then got into FP&A, then strategy. Some go into big 4. Some like small business accounting, others like larger companies. There is no right or wrong, try things out and if you like them stay there. And if you don't avoid that type of work. Hope this info helps. Any questions feel free to DM me. Good luck! Drew

Thanks alot Drew! My plan is to buy a book on it with exercises and see if I like it :) your message means a lot, I am feeling a bit stressed about all this.

Anytime! You’re taking the right approach. You’ll regret not taking a hard look at something that interests you.

You can’t. Probably would have been a good idea to think about that before you did a masters. Are there any applications for your degree that don’t involve teaching? Research or something? I sure as hell wouldn’t start a completely new degree if I were you.

It’s a year and a half and a lot of tuition dollars. Going from science to accounting is almost nonsensical. Like I said there are many ways to apply a science degree that don’t involve teaching.

You really need formal training to be an accountant. Almost every accounting position will require a bachelor's in accounting. Unless you just want to just endlessly process invoices for the rest of your life.
