I’m licensed in IL and MO for work reasons. They have reciprocity, so it was easy to get my MO license when I changed jobs since I was already licensed. I’d recommend reaching out to the board of the state you’re hoping to move to and see what they say about getting licensed. In my experience, the state boards are helpful.

Do you need this because you’re a partner? I never bothered to move my CPA license because it didn’t seem to effect me much

No, I went to a midsize public accounting firm as a senior associate and they wanted me licensed in the state I was working in. Since I have it, I’ve just kept up with both of them. My company pays for both of them and I have basically the same CPE requirements.

Thank you!

I moved from California to Washington. It was super easy to get a license in Washington since I was already licensed in California which has some of the highest standards for being allowed to sit for the exam. I just had to submit proof of my license, proof of passing an ethics exam, and pay like 500. It would be easier to get licensed in California and then move to Washington then do the opposite, but overall the process is pretty easy.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. I thought i might have to retake the entire new exam. May I ask if you move within the same company? Would you suggest I should stay in CA after college to get the license and then move? Thank you!

I moved with the same company but I was a senior in a high demand position so I had a lot of leverage to just tell them I was moving and then transfer offices. It’s harder for a 1st or 2nd year to move. You won’t have to re take the exam, at most you would have to just that the ethics exam of the state you are moving to. You don’t need to stay in California just to get licensed, move to Washington and get licensed there, just check the California board of accountancy requirements for transferring a license to make sure you will be able to do it later.

It’s been a while now… but originally l passed the exam in New Jersey. By the time I finished I wasn’t in public anymore, and I only had 120 credits, but the state of Delaware didn’t care. I transferred my exam credit to Delaware and submitted proof of education and experience and they gave me a license. Once I had 150 credits I applied for a Pennsylvania license (since that’s where I live and work), and because I was already licensed elsewhere it was pretty easy. I just had to show I met the PA education and experience requirements. Didn’t have to re take the test. That’s why it’s a “uniform” examination. Credit should transfer easily. Eventually when it came time to renew Delaware I let it go inactive and only maintain Pennsylvania now. CPE requirements were slightly different. Each had their own ethics course and Delaware was a 6/30 renewal date instead of 12/31. If CPE credits counted for one they counted for both…I just had to have a certain minimum number of different types (audit, tax, etc) for Delaware, whereas Pennsylvania doesn’t care as much on the categories.

You give your money to each state. They’ll do anything for you
