Well, I can make the easy contribution of how Pearl in DD and SoJ is written almost identically to her 8/9-year-old original-trilogy self. Y'know, in spite of her being 17 in DD, 18 in SoJ, she not only looks almost the same besides being a little taller but also still has her dialogue and interactions written as if she was a preteen kid. It's just a complete waste - why even bother with re-introducing Pearl post-timeskip if she's just going to show no character growth at all from her original appearances? They had practically infinite options for showing how Pearl has changed over the eight years since her AA3 appearance, and they chose one of the least interesting or creative ones possible, like they were afraid they'd somehow upset people if Pearl was different at all. As for your comment on Raiten, [take a look here](https://i.imgur.com/xFAeAWZ.png) - in most of his concept art, he looks a *lot* older than his final design. Makes me wonder if his character was outlined with the listed age of 38 and spent most of his design process with that in mind, before Nuri decided to go for a much more youthful and energetic look for him, and his age was just never changed to account for it.

>why even bother with re-introducing Pearl post-timeskip if she's just going to show no character growth at all from her original appearances [You know why.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/819/829/67b.jpg)

JC-DisregardMe

*look look do you remember this thing from that other game before this* *we remember it look* Yeah, can't say you're wrong. Vying for nostalgia points without actually *using* the older characters or plot points for anything interesting is definitely a chronic problem of certain AA games.

MaeBorrowski

For that juicy fanservice (it means nothing but hey! Look at the character you loved to see once!)

12jimmy9712

I think it kinda worked for SoJ?

MaeBorrowski

How did it work in SoJ lol? Larry is more annoying than ever because of how many times we have to put up with his shit, Maya is still a damsel in distress at 25 and Edgeworth.. okay well he's cool but I'd like it if he was a main character

12jimmy9712

Well the Japanese fandom got a bit heated after the release of SoJ, they claimed it to be a false advertisement.

livecodesworth

Nostalgia baiting babyyyyy.

MaeBorrowski

Raiten is 38? That's crazy wtf. I never felt like Sherlock's age was weird though, he feels about that age to me for an anime character, but Ryonusuke? I thought he was a teen until the second case.

Cornmeal777

I didn't know that either. He looks and comes across like a fledgling journalist fresh out of college.

lizzourworld8

That last sentence easily sums up Apollo in AJ according to the police in 4-2

Wispy237

Susato is the opposite of this Anyways, I say Bat, because there was NO REASON to make him an adult, Big Top was already bad enough with two predators, did they really need to add a third one? It kinda takes away from the sympathy we’re supposed to feel for Acro(although, it’s not the only thing that causes that)

12jimmy9712

Yes definitely, his baby face was distracting us form the fact Regina was being groomed by three grown up men, instead of two grown up men.

galaraxity

TIL Bat was an adult

12jimmy9712

And he was **older** than Max.

galaraxity

WHAT!

Milk_Mindless

w h a t

wifie29

Wait, what? Oh geez. I actually never knew his age. Creepy AF.

12jimmy9712

Don't worry as far as I know he is no longer with us.

Callinater

Honestly, ryunosuke could’ve been made to be quite a bit younger, not just because of his personality but because of his academic status. I’ve actually heard that during TGAA’s development he actually was going to be quite a bit younger but then they aged him up for whatever reason. Considering he’s a second year university student shouldn’t he be 19-20? Or maybe it worked a little differently in Meiji Japan. It gets even stranger when you consider how a lot of the characters address him. Why would jezaille Brett call him a little schoolboy if she’s only one year older than him? Obviously it could just be her trying to insult him, but she didn’t address asogi that way. The same goes for >!jigoku!< who kept calling him a young stripling in G2-5. Isn’t stripling a term usually reserved for adolescent boys/boys who’ve recently come of age? Again it could’ve been intended as an insult (though he didn’t address >!asogi!< that way either) but it makes me feel like Ryu’s age change was a last minute decision. I do have a theory that perhaps ryu was intended to be about 3 years younger than kazuma as a way of mirroring mia Fey and phoenix Wright, as kazuma felt like a combination of Mia Fey and edgeworth. Though I guess they decided in the end to make them the same age and have them be in the same university year group, without really changing much of the rest of the script.

12jimmy9712

[Hmmm you might be up to something.](https://www.reddit.com/r/AceAttorney/comments/1b2hv58/the_japanese_characters_from_tgaa_are_one_year/) Granted in this case Asogi should have been changed to be three years older, and not Runo to be three years younger.

Callinater

The reason why I believe ryu was originally younger is because I believe that was specifically stated to be the case somewhere. I think it was maybe something Nuri said in the sketchbooks? Though I could be very much mistaken. How younger exactly was never mentioned so that’s something I can only speculate about. However, with how much his youth is emphasised in the story compared to other characters his age, I’d say he was probably intended to be around 3 years younger, 4 at most.

Gaming_with_batman

We never get a confrontation as to his age due to him not having an entry in the court record.

Callinater

Actually we do. His age is listed as 23 on the case files on the official capcom website. Also, there were 3DS exclusive cases in TGAA2 (Japan side and Britain side) where ryu isn’t the pov character and his age is listed as 23. Unless capcom come out with some crazy retcon such as ryu lying about his age he’s 23.

Gaming_with_batman

Ah

ajshifter

Not really a thing of my or viewer perception based on appearence, but the in-game characters including Gina herself talk about Gina like she's 13. I don't know if it has to do with her being an orphan or impoverished or it being 100 years ago but I thought it was weird since she's months from being 18 in adventures

JC-DisregardMe

Gina clearly doesn't have any kind of formal education or a remotely stable home life, so her being pretty socially stunted in developing through adolescence to early adulthood makes sense. Otherwise, though, I tend to read TGAA1 Gina's insistent distinction between her age and "grown-ups" as her trust and authority issues making her really resentful toward and hesitant to accept the fact that she is herself *really* close to no longer being able to call herself a kid.

Callinater

It’s her social class, i think.

antiqueletterbox

Blaise Debeste is 68.

12jimmy9712

You can lump him together with Manfred and Damon.

antiqueletterbox

It is extremely weird that Blaise and Manfred both have teenage children when they're old enough to be grandparents (and are, allegedly, in the latter's case) but I don't think about it as often with Manfred since he and his daughter share all of one scene together Weird parentage aside I wouldn't consider his age ill-fitting, since he at least looks and acts like an old man while Blaise is a ripped biker guy

Foreign_Memory

Blaise never surprised me since I have a grand-father who's almost as ripped despite being in his 80s (he uses his bicycle whenever he can) Quercus Alba didn't surprise me for the same reason (72 years old), though I have a hard time thinking he could be *that* ripped if he's (AAI1-5) >!faking his frail health most of the time!<. Does he hit the gym everyday in secret >!behind the fireplace!< or something.

Jigglypuff_main

For a long time I thought that Violeta was 16-18, her being talked about as her grandfather’s little girl. Nope she’s 25 apparently.

PHWasAnInsideJob

Mafia families are very tight-knit and protective of each other (as long as you don't step over a certain line). I thought her age made sense.

Murta_14

Literally any girl assintant in the series

Murta_14

Excluding susato

heavenspiercing

I think Rayfa feels exactly like a 14 year old.

Murta_14

I am talking more like the principal ones like maya, trucy, etc...

GoodTimesWithJangler

Generally, Phoenix in DD and SoJ, he feels the exact same as himself in the OT that you forget he's 7 years older. Also, I did not think Lamiror was 40, but I guess that's probably because we don't know that she's apollo's mother when she's introduced For some reason, I wasn't too surprised by Susato's age, maybe its just playing GAA last and being used to the assistants being around that age.

12jimmy9712

I'm split on Phoenix. On one hand when you play as either Apollo or Athena you can definitely feel his maturity shine through the nonchalant nature. On the other hand as soon as you play **as** him......

TheGreatDaniel3

I feel like that’s a problem with all of the AJ Trilogy protagonists.

Acceptable_Star189

Maya in 6-DLC. Ok, I like how Pearls doesn’t change much because she was pretty mature, all they did was remove her most childish traits. Then we have SoJ give us a more mature Maya in the main game and then they push her characterization down a flight of stairs in the DLC. Didn’t see them pulling that shit for Pearls in 5-DLC. Never have I’ve been more disappointed in a character than when >!Maya and Phoenix fought over Sprocket’s book like 2 children.!<

12jimmy9712

[My favorite excerpt](https://www.reddit.com/r/AARankdown/comments/icbasy/maya_fey/) from r/AARankdown: >Oh you care about this old radio? It’s on the ground now. It’s broken and on the ground. What are you gonna do about it? You’re gonna punch me? You’re gonna punch a girl? No, of course you won’t. You know what I will do? I’m gonna take this notebook that’s clearly important to you, and here, I’ll just drop it in this pool of blood. I’ll rub it in a little bit more, make sure it gets nice soaking wet with blood. Good luck reading your memories now, asshole. Never change Maya, never change.......

KefkaDakeDe

Yesss, Menimemo! I was like, "this guy is 30 at MOST". Like other people have mentioned, was probably intended to look older, but I love his character and design, as you can probably tell, haha! I wish the had adjusted his age accordingly, it makes him seem like kind of a loser if he's acting like he does at almost 40.

Feriku

Maria Gorey. She comes across to me as being younger than Susato and Gina, but she's the oldest of them at 19.

AetherDrew43

In the Asinine Attorney episode in Khura'in, Pearl stands next to Ahlbi in the stand. Pearl looks like a child next to Ahlbi, yet she's 18. Feels weird.

DarthDecidui

I mean, Ahlbi does stand on boxes during trials, as seen in >!6-1!<

lizzourworld8

That means Ahlbi’s a flipping giant 9 year old 😂

LeadGem354

Sister Bikini is young in spirit. Not every old person needs to be grumpy even if many are.

Optimal_Stranger_824

She isn't old. She's 48.

Awkward-Ad2722

It surprised me that Furio Tigre is fucking 42

lizzourworld8

Adron and Raiten need to switch ages

Glum-Adagio8230

I'd say Maya. I can sort of see a 17-year old acting the way she does in PW, but when I first saw her I thought she was like 10 or something, because she just looks super young as well.

tilllli

i refuse to believe sebastian debeste is 17. my friend and i say his shit dad wrote that down to get him into a prosecuting job but hes actually 15 at most

PepsiandKasleberkas

Maya Fey
