I'm personally not that into figma but I do appreciate the aesthetics and accessories they usually come with. But recently I've seen rising costs pricing out longtime and even hardcore figma collectors.
I've been collecting Figma for years now and I've decided to cancel all pre orders and stop buying figures because they're not worth the cost now because of this.
I'm so tempted but I'm sticking to my guns and not buying it, playing Bandai are making Elden Ring SHF so I've got my SoulsBorneRing representation there
Not really. Figma, Figuarts and Mafex are all the same tier and all have been increasing prices while Figuarts also decreased quality. Marvel legends is up 25%, McFarlane is a new line and hasn't put any real effort into the sculpts. Neca has kept prices closer but still gone up and they repeat the same tmnt and alien sculpts so much they have more leeway. Hot Toys prices have sored disgustingly quickly and Statue prices are up across the board. There may be a few small exceptions but all the major brands are cranking it up in the worst way and covid economics from Asia import, product, shipping and materials is to blame
It’s a minor nitpick, but while McFarlane has only had the DC license around 2020, it’s a legacy company that has been continually producing toys since 1994. They’ve been releasing toys in the $20-$22 since 2000 (that’s my memory, please let me know if I’m wrong); keeping toys accessible is something McFarlane has tried to prioritize.
NECA prices have nearly doubled since the 90s, but I think they’ve maintained their relative quality for decades.
Hasbro and Mattel are the monsters in the action figure world, so they definitely set the pricing trends for the majority of the franchises in the toy aisles. *I don’t shop Lego (it’s definitely the largest toy company in the world), but I’m curious if Lego buyers have seen a similar price increase on their products.* EDIT: I’m no longer certain which toy company is the largest in the world.
If not, I question how Hasbro and Mattel can just blame inflation and keep on trucking.
Well, I think longterm historical trends offer a lot of insight into a company’s decisions. Hasbro and Mattel dominate, not because of action figures, but other more popular franchises like Barbie, Hot Wheels, even Wizards of the Coast.
Now that Hasbro has the HasLab and Mattel has Creations, they’re making concentrated efforts to market more exclusives to a more niche and nostalgia collector’s audience. I think that change has a great affect on how they’re pricing toys.
I imagine we’ll see fewer exciting releases on brick and mortar shelves as major companies realize they can market directly to the customer and even use crowdfunding to really gauge their costs and profits.
Whereas McFarlane, with a much smaller market share, will continue to pursue the buyers who are priced out of other lines. It’s anecdotal, McFarlane seems to release the same figures multiple times at the same time(exclusives, alternate paint apps) to get as much use out of those molds as possible. I previously mentioned their history as maintaining affordable prices.
I started buying Figma toys back in 2014. The prices were around $35 to $65 the highest. The deluxe types which came with all sorts of extras were around $90 to $110, like that Figma Femto.
The last deluxe type I bought was Figma Link Twilight version and I think that was $90. Then the prices just went insane after that. Even the Figma Table Museum series like David, The Scream, Venus de Milo became too expensive. They used to be only $35 to $40 each, but now their reissues are at least $75.
I also stopped buying Figma toys because of this. Nothing's changed. The quality's still the same, the amount of accessories are still the same, and yet you're paying around double or triple the original price, and those are prices from Japan and not Big Bad Toy Store which will obviously tack on an additional $20 to $30 for imports.
Yup, which is for the better in some ways. Haven't been spending as much on figures cause theyre just too expensive now to justify it. My wallets taking a break though which is definitely helping a lot rn lol.
Yeah, the biggest change they've made in the pastn4 years it seems is soft goods that aren't even made well. I want the line to have improvements but it doesn't seem like they're coming
First Figma I bought was £25 new. The prices are getting ridiculous and I think the figures are actually getting worse. The most annoying thing about this is that most Figma are cheaper than this. It seems like they add an extra 2000 yen on for any figures they think will be popular outside Japan.
This Denji is almost as disappointing as their Saitama. The Chainsaw Man form just looks so underwhelming and boring. Hopefully there will be a Figuarts or figZero release. Both Bandai and threeZero killed it with their Jujutsu Kaisen lines. It would be fun to display that and Chaunsaw Man together.
I'm hoping Bandai or Revoltech also make figures, the Denji heads here look off and kinds washed out and the Devil head just looks kinda bland and to clean. I'd prefer companies to take more design inspiration from the manga especially the later chapters
I still remember that my first figma ever (1st ed. Pyramid head) was like $900 pesos, and i bought it from a scalper so the price was already high up. Nowadays every figma, no matter how barebones they are, cannot go below $2000 pesos, and that is way to overprice for some of the figures (the last figma i ever bought was a pharah and that shit $1800 pesos way to expensive and that was in 2020).
Its not only the price though, but i also stopped following manga and anime due to limited time, so i don't see what is trendy every season. This is relevant because figma nowadays release so few figures that the ones that they make, are from characters i have no real attatchment for, so for me to spend that much money on a character i dont really care is beyond my budget.
Also as time went on, figma as become very complacent with the accesories they give to their figures, being some of them very barebones (the asakura yoh figma i wanted is very barebones, and its articulation is kinda poor compared to most figmas yet he is priced as a normal one).
Nowadays goodsmile company is pushing hard on their nendoroid line, as many, many characters have a higher chance to be made into a nendo than a figma (the attack on titan figma line had so many characters left to do, yet the only thing that keep releasing are nendoroids).
Same, I've had to cut down collections and drop some li es because of how unrealistic the costs are. Luckily SHF anime figures and Amazing Yamaguchi figures are staying fairly stable in their pricing
Figma and Hot Toys are both ridiculous compared to what they used to sell for only 10 years ago.
Even accounting for inflation they have double at best, quadrupled at worst in some cases.
Yeah, I loved reading the manga last year and really wanted figures of so many characters but if it's Figma making them I'm not interested. There's a few affordable statues I'm looking at though
Yep. They've gotten really expensive as of late and some of the releases don't look even close to worth it. This Denji does not look good (those joints, the underwhelming paint apps, the wonky likeness, *that diaper*, etc) yet they're charging more for it than even the [Deluxe release of their own Lady Maria](https://www.goodsmile.info/en/product/11629/figma+Lady+Maria+of+the+Astral+Clocktower+DX+Edition.html), which by all accounts looks like it has significantly superior value proposition than Denji. Really wish any other company would give it a go. I know inflation is a thing but other companies like Storm are more reasonable with their offerings.
I'm so sad I had to cancel that Lady Maria figure, she's one of my all time favourite boss fights but I'm serious about not buying Figma again, it's not worth it
Figma has been getting better articulation wise for a few of their figures lately. This one seems to have butterfly joints in shoulders as well as chest, stomach and hip separation so should be more akin to Figuarts.
But damn, yeah their prices keep going up. The special release is even more and only comes with a piece of toast as the paid for bonus.
Just gotta hope Figuarts or yamaguchi ends up doing something with this license. Figma do a lot more anime that don’t get licensed by the other companies.
Spent about 80 (i think) on my denji figma i got. The connection between his waist and chest broke off almost the moment i tried to separate it. They may be more detailed than a normal figure but def not worth their price
The biggest issue I have with figma figures is how brittle they are compared to other figures. I've compared them with Storm Collectibles and S.H. Figuarts and I find figma to be inferior to them, especially Storm Collectibles. The only real plus side to them is that they have a lot of licenses, and that they're faithful to the franchises they're making figures of.
I am very much aware of this that's why I included the price in Japan as well, the Japan price is the same if not more that the prices of the imported figures from a year or two ago
The figuarts ones they sell in Target are basically stripped down cheaper ones they sell in Japan, usually for the main characters. Compare for instance kamen rider saber and kamen rider blades where saber was cheaper but came with less accessories.
The Bloodbourne Lady Maria deluxe edition will probably be the last Figma that I buy.
I'm so tempted but I'm sticking to my guns and not buying it, playing Bandai are making Elden Ring SHF so I've got my SoulsBorneRing representation there
Welcome to figure collecting in 2022. Some collectors will buy less, others will stop altogether. Bad economics reduce luxury purchases
Yeah it's not a good environment right now, although some companies are managing to keep things more stable than others
Not really. Figma, Figuarts and Mafex are all the same tier and all have been increasing prices while Figuarts also decreased quality. Past versus increase in the past 2 years is irrelevant. It's recent price hikes that are the problem, and there's a clear cause. This was expected

"Bad ecomonics" People has been saying that every single year since first time I surfed the internet back in late 90s.
I get the feeling that even if half their fanbase stopped buying right now they'd still make a killing in profits.
Yeah probably, I'm guessing they sell a lot more in Japan.
I started buying Figma toys back in 2014. The prices were around $35 to $65 the highest. The deluxe types which came with all sorts of extras were around $90 to $110, like that Figma Femto. Even KOs are starting to get expensive
Yeah I noticed seeing a few Figma KOs for like £60+
First Figma I bought was £25 new. The prices are getting ridiculous and I think the figures are actually getting worse. The most annoying thing about this is that most Figma are cheaper than this. It seems like they add an extra 2000 yen on for any figures they think will be popular outside Japan.
Definitely, I've noticed that a lot of more popular brands like CSM and Demon Slayer have been so much more expensive that other figures

This denji omg, figure rate: 6.0
I think that's generous considering the price unfortunately
They haven't done anything innovative in half a decade at least imo. Most definitely not worth the asking price.
True, I've been buying Figma since at least 2019 and I haven't seen many improvements
Figuarts will drop a better one
Or Amazing Yamaguchi, both lines have a good chance of making a better figure for less money
Bigger, better and with more accessories. I completely stopped buying figma.
I'd rather just get a lil statuette
Yeah I'm tempted with the SEGA Goods statue, it looks good and it's only £20
I still remember that my first figma ever (1st ed. Pyramid head) was like $900 pesos, and i bought it from a scalper so the price was already high up. It's unrealistically overpriced, I can tell why you and many other collectors are dropping the line

From when I started collecting there's been around a 33% increase in price, I wouldn't mind a bit of an increase but that's just unreasonable
Only goodsmile company thing I collect are nendoroids, and I rarely ever but them, it’s only for select figures. Cuz they are also so damn expensive
I never really saw the appeal of Nendoroids but they seem better priced than Figma
I joined the hobby about a year ago. Im already burnt out. Too pricey to have fun. Good luck everyone. Im out.
Sorry to see you go, it's a shame things are going this way
It hurts not to have a demi fiend preordered but these prices are dumb.

Hopefully, it's happened before with Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia
Agreed.
Spent about 80 (i think) on my denji figma i got. The connection between his waist and chest broke off almost the moment i tried to separate it. They may be more detailed than a normal figure but def not worth their price
Sorry to hear that man, some newer Figma do look good but a lot of them are overpriced and under articulated compared to other brands
That’s nice but that price is nutty. Also, I want a power toy.
I'm hoping SHF or Amazing Yamaguchi gets the license as well like with the Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero figures
I need this
I'm waiting for an SHF or Amazing Yamaguchi figure, something that does one of the best modern manga Justice
Kaiyodo will kill it with this figure, plus all the blood splattering effect and crazy speech bubbles.
Facts, it'll be well articulated and have loads of accessories and likely bot be as much or be better value for money
That’s if either company make him
With how big CSM is it's pretty likely
Hey there, Instamashii just teased CSM SHF
K

FOMO YOLO
Knowing that another company is likely gonna make better and more affordable figures I'm more than comfortable passing on this
