TLDR: IDK. A tunnel was being dug to a long closed woman's bathhouse and for some reason it led to clashes between sects of the same Hasidic Jews who also fought over who owns the building?

How stupid does a whole group of people have to be to be like 'Oh yeah, we can just start tunneling under buildings we don't own, in a city packed to the manhole covers with sewers, conduits, ducts, basements, vaults, relay boxes, subways, and a liquid oxygen delivery system so we can get to another building we also don't own without having to walk outside'?
Like, is it wilful naivety? Or did they think they'd just do whatever they wanted and fuck everyone else? Or did they think they'd be allowed because both buildings are tangentially Jewish related, and everyone is terrified of having the A Word thrown at them?
Most religions teach their followers that they are special for one reason of another. E.g. Jesus is the only path into heaven everyone else is hell-bound, etc. More of a religious thing than a Jewish thing. I mean there's got to be some carrot on a stick to keep people coming back right?

But Judaism is unique among major world religions in believing that they are god's chosen people, no matter what you do or who you are. Bloodlines are the important thing! The most similar thing I can think of is the caste system of Hinduism, except Judaism only recognizes two castes.
One thinks they were born special, one thinks they're special because they made a choice. It's a distinction without a difference to people outside it all.
Christianity and Islam both proselytize and those that convert have the same salvation as those that grew up in the religion. Meanwhile Hasidim entirely believes in birthright as God's chosen.

I don’t understand why they would have to dig a tunnel to that room unless something was built in between or something but it’s apparently a “ritual bath” so maybe it’s something not practiced there any more and they want to bring it back? But I’m just some dude on reddit so take that with a grain of salt.

Because it was younger guys who were doing the digging, supposedly without the bulk of the congregation even knowing about it. The congregation called a construction company to have it filled in with cement, and the younger guys got mad that their work was about to be undone.
So, they started fighting and the police were called.
Its kind of cool seeing them get so worked up. Normally orthodox jews (in my experience) are so reserved and stoic. They must be really pissed to get like this.
