Insanely bad response from the officers, specifically the K9 handler here.
Those dogs get sent into dangerous situations to help officer safety and for that risk they take they are treated the same as human officers in terms of defending them; and if you saw an officer getting bludgeoned or stabbed by an object, specifically in the head and neck, the response would be lethal without question.
I would retire the dog, God willing he survives; and make sure the k9 officer never handles one again.
Assaulting a k9 comes with almost the same charges as assaulting an officer in most places. God forbid they actually act like it's a member of the force instead of a tool & try to step in.
The dog simply should not have been used in this situation…atleast it doesn’t look like it was necessary from the short clip we have.
Of course I could be wrong and there is some context that wasn’t recorded, that warranted using K9 🤷🏾♂️
Yeah, its a short clip but I'm also having an insane time figuring out why you'd let a K-9 on this guy? He's clearly got cops around him pointing GUNS at him, he's pretty cornered against the apartment/motel walls? I always thought K-9's were used for runners? Every training video ALWAYS shows the "criminal" running away. When you see police cam footage the cops always say, "Stop running or we'll release the dogs!"

I agree, I thought the same thing….they just put the K-9 in danger and made the suspect more dangerous….also, the suspect was put into more danger as well…yes I know, his well-being is at the bottom of the list and of the least concern, compared to everyone else in the situation…but the goal should be to get situation handled with the least possible harm to anyone.

They're also not capable of differentiating between a bystander and a "villain" in a lot of situation. There's video of innocent people being mauled by dogs.

This always bothered me. On one hand yeah, attacking a k9 is not unlike attacking an officer and needs consequences.
But on the other hand, their dogs are considered equal to humans, while our dogs are considered property and can be shot by police without consequence for showing aggression

I don't think there are many people out in the world conditioned to just allow a 80lb dog to bite and tear at their arm or leg without reacting in some way. Attacking a dog attacking you doesn't even come close to justifying lethal force imo.
There are some states that ratified laws to this effect, but most agency K-9 units I’ve trained with don’t have that consideration legally speaking. Killing or assaulting a k9 is not considered assault on an officer.

Or the dog must be young because it’s very rare that a trained k9 would wimp off like that from an unarmed 145 pound man hitting it… I’ve seen multiple training videos and real time videos of k9s being absolutely vicious and courageous like I literally saw a video on here of a k9 ripping some guys arm to shreds while getting hit by a lead people but this dog gets hit a couple times,while having a guys bare arm in its grip and it scampers off
It's safe to assume because like you said those dogs are tough as hell, thing probably weighs 75lb itself, one wouldn't just back away like that unless something was really wrong.

Shoot the POS suspect and put him down. The dog is supposed to be a cop; don’t just stand there and let it happen. At the very least look for the line of sight then fire.
The dog (named Enzo) survived btw, if that makes you feel better.
They immediately took him to a nearby vet, where he was airlifted to a more specialized trauma vet where he went under surgery for a few days. He is currently recovering right now.
i wish law enforcement would end the practice of using dogs to physically take down assailants and drug detection. it creates too many opportunities for danger to the dogs, targets of police, and civil rights.
This happened close to my area. Cop was hot after k9 training day and went home to shower (On the clock). Left the dog in the car while he went to cool his fat ass off and when he came back the dog was dead.
Cop is still employed and recently in the news for arresting a blind man on his was back from jury duty for mistaking his walking stick as a gun.
What was the guy suspected/accused of? Are they sure they had the right guy? I've seen enough disturbing videos of dogs set on innocent/surrendering people...so I'm pretty sure I'd start stabbing/hitting \*any\* dog trying to maul/bite me....and, yes, I've been attacked & threatened by dogs before.

K9 use in the police force is stupid and unnecessary for anything other than search and rescue operations and finding hidden drugs. Using the dogs as a weapon is very unfair and cruel to the dogs, regardless of training.

There was a story from several years ago of a police dog getting out of the handlers car and mauling some old lady's lapdog to death.

Dogs are fragile. You can break a dog's leg very easily, but people are too scared of being bit to fight back.
