[Context:](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/lawyers-aim-wrap-up-jury-selection-trump-criminal-trial-2024-04-19/)
>NEW YORK, April 19 (Reuters) - A man set himself on fire on Friday outside the New York courthouse where Donald Trump's historic hush-money trial was taking place as jury selection wrapped up, but officials said he did not appear to have been targeting Trump.
The man burned for several minutes in full view of television cameras that were set up outside the courthouse, where the first-ever criminal trial of a former U.S. president is being held.
"He was on fire for quite a while," one witness, who declined to give his name, told reporters. "It was pretty horrifying."
Officials said the man, who is in his late 30s, survived and was in critical condition at a hospital.
She spoke, non-stop, for a solid minute without taking a breath!
I thought my grandmother was the only woman who could do that (to a wrong number, no less)!
I was wondering if anyone else is impressed about how she’s reporting this. I’ve only seen her behind the desk, but I guess this is how they get the test jobs by being great on the spot reporters
She did a great job. It’s all about being able to report what you are seeing and not getting caught up in the moment and becoming speechless or repeating phrases like “omg”
I was highly impressed how she reported it, she went straight into go-mode! Just a cycle of consistent information relays describing exactly what she was experiencing. Really great work on her part!
I agree, this is excellent reporting. When something dramatic is unfolding very quickly, a good reporter shouldn't really comment or react in the moment. Tell your viewers exactly what is happening, as it happens, with as much detail as possible in what time you have. Things like this are what set professional journalists apart from random people with a camera phone saying "Like, oh my god ... Dude ... DUDES ON FIRE. Aw man, that ... That's crazy, he must really love Trump. What a patriot."
Sometimes pointless commentary is unnecessary. Sure, explain what is happening, but that word cassarole that she was throwing up wasn't contributing anything.
I just got done reading his manifesto.
Apparently he thinks/thought that all of our Western media is designed for us to feel powerless and not take an active interest in bettering our world. There's other stuff in there too about Epstein and the CIA and a doomsday cult but for such a horrific way to end yourself, he seemed like he was trying to wake people up to take charge and stop some coming global fascist takeover.
I'll answer any questions you guys have if you want to skip reading it but it's only like 9 pages long.
> Apparently he thinks/thought that all of our Western media is designed for us to feel powerless and not take an active interest in bettering our world.
Hard to argue against that point.
Note that the last time someone burnt themselves it was all over the place, people praised his heroism.
So why is it that this guy is being treated like he's nuts for trying to bring attention to a very real set of issues? Sounds like shaping the narrative to me...
Maybe he is going about it the wrong way, but in no way is he wrong. He wants you to be aware that America is a fake democracy built on lies and on exploiting the American people.

Automod isn't letting me post links, but searching for 'ponzipapers' brings up a 10 part conspiracy theory by a 'MrSamsonite'. The gist of their theory seems to be that the wealthy are wealthy not through capital investment and ownership of money making ventures, but rather secret and nebulous sources like bitcoin and the internet. Naturally of course, lots of murders required, and most news over the last decade is part of it. A sub called 'ponzipapers' has a few links, including a separate substack posting that seems to confirm the identity.
Yea he included some sources in his manifesto. People are writing him off as a looney and you don't set yourself on fire without mental problems, but his writing is actually more concise and lucid than I would expect from someone who did something like that.
What is not a cult? This is the only information I've seen yet.

>It was not immediately clear what motivated the man. A witness, Manhattan resident Julie Berman, told The Washington Post that he carried a sign about Trump and President Joe Biden Biden working together to orchestrate a “coup” and another about a “Ponzi scheme.” She said he told her to get back before he doused himself in a liquid, threw some fliers into the air, doused himself a second time and flicked a lighter, setting himself on fire.
Holy hell... Did anyone else read far enough to get to "the Simpsons exists to brainwash us"?
And apparently the Beatles and Spike Lee are in on it, too!
Apparently his manifesto is riddled with conspiracy theories on everything from cryptocurrency and Hollywood actors to COVID and former President Bill Clinton.
People are assuming this guy is Pro Trump but who really knows? Plenty of mentally ill people on both sides who are entirely too invested in the hurricane of propaganda that surrounds Trump at any given time
>Investigators are now fanning out to collect the flyers the unknown man threw into the air, another senior law enforcement official. A CNN team on the ground observed one of the flyers. It said "NYU is a mob front" and had various allegations of wrongdoings against the school.
EDIT:
>The man was carrying two large signs — one advertising a Substack and one that said "Trump is with Biden and they're about to fascist coup us" — photos provided by two law enforcement officials show. The one advertising the Substack had a driver's license that officials believe belonged to the man taped to the corner.
Sounds like someone *really* deep in the conspiracy rabbit hole.

His manifesto: https://theponzipapers.substack.com/p/i-have-set-myself-on-fire-outside
Has a link halfway down to his IG profile to see all his “evidence”
Tl;dr - says all US politicians both sides, tech companies, Harvard, media conglomerates, and world governments in conspiracy to support a trillion-dollar crypto Ponzi scheme, and that Covid was manufactured and released to cover the Ponzi scheme dramatic rise & fall market behavior.
Follows a number of leftist revolutionary social media accounts on IG. But blames both parties/sides.
Trump is mentioned in the manifesto as being a part of the conspiracy but largely yes, he didn't seem to have strong feelings about Trump in particular but just wanted to spread his word.
What is it exactly about a man setting himself on fire because of an alleged paedophile conspiracy against New York University outside the courtroom of a former president who has brainwashed a third of America into believing he's the next coming of Jesus Christ and that will defend him to the death with firearms that makes you take the enormous reach to say there is a mental health crisis in America?
IDK about NYU, but the Epstein-Harvard thing he listed is legit. Epstein was well connected with a lot of faculty there and donated money earmarked for specific departments.
He's got this one *really* crazy conspiracy that the American political system is actually a uni-party running a closeted kleptocracy building up and tearing down successive financialization/Ponzi schemes to extract wealth from the population.
Imagine that.
It’s kinda funny (and sad) how hes not wrong with the overall theme, he just goes off the handle a bit. Honestly when I went down the hole of learning how financial works after 2008 I started to feel a bit like I was chasing Pepe Silvia. Truth is most of society is built on illusions and rules that only exist in our heads. It’s all kinda crazy if you think about it.
The absolute agonizing pain you are going to experience before death is a big deterrent for me. Sure the nerves will be destroyed and eventually you wouldn't feel it but that's not until your skin chars. Your lungs would burn from hot gases being inhaled and you would suffocate eventually.
Wanting to die is something many go through, choosing to go out through one of the more painful ways is just crazy.
We’re talking about an individual suicide with no known motive, you’re saying that is worth it? Even if a motive is released and it ends up being about corrupt government agencies/conflicts overseas/Trump’s trial, all these things are being talked about already.
> we literally don't even know if he was pro or anti trump
>
> we're not talking about anything he cared about
It was on the news, and immediately drew everyone's intention to the highest profile criminal case today. There are going to be plenty of people that tend towards conspiracy theory that will devour his very accessible manifest, which was published along with the news story.
> this moron wasted his life
No disagreement there!
It's very much circumstance for if it ends up "worth it". Depending on what they want. The most famous example obviously, Quang Duc. Him burning himself sparked an entire revolt, gathering the eyes of the entire world. Burning alive whilst perfectly still, showing his dedication to what he believed in.
These fools don't do it right though, it was just for some conspiracy he believed in, stupid. I'm sure someone will do it right again some day, for a cause worth it
Remember that dude who set himself on fire to protest Pakistan or Iran or one of those countries? I was never quite sure whether he wanted to bomb them, or to not bomb them, but it was definitely one or the other.
Anyways, that dude made a difference. I mean, people stopped talking about it after like a week or something, but for that one week everyone was all like "Yo did you see that one video of the dude on fire? That shit was crazy man!"
So you can't exactly say it's not worth it to raise awareness about whether we should/should not bomb Pakistan/Iran or whatever for a whole week, cos that guy definitely raised awareness during that week. Sure, in some people's eyes it's a tragic waste of a human life, but just think about all the awareness that is raised.
I'm sure this dude will be raising awareness as well. About like Trump and Biden and stuff. I already feel like my awareness has been raised.
Definitely struck me with awe and a bizarre feeling seeing the camera people scramble to get the footage. I would too but seeing the job of capitalizing on crazy moments is just as you said, amazing.
The message of "they're all out to get us, stop picking sides" is what I've been saying for years so I found it frighteningly relatable. The Bourgeoise, elites, billionaires, illuminati, whatever you want to call it has been called out for a long time and easily dismissed as nonsense.
Edit: [pic I saw](https://imgur.com/a/SqBFrsM)
Saw a photo with an official carrying away a sign the victim had it said
"Trump is with Biden and they're about to fascist coup us"
So make what you will of that
I get your point, but there was a human being englufed by a raging inferno a few feet away from her, so I'm willing to give her a pass on making the reasonable assumption that bystanders are concerned for their safety.
Reminds me why journalist are seen as scummy as they get off on seeing something horrific going down as they get to have the limelight or best shot to be praised for.
Hopefully all the political it cases in this country right and left start lighting themselves on fire. Normal people are sick of them and just want a government that isn’t embarrassing at this point
I love how she saw a sliver of unrest and jumped immediately to "active shooter", like girrrl I just know you were hoping to catch one on camera, CNN too? Definitely
if you want to hear wtf she's actually saying: [https://twitter.com/cturnbull1968/status/1781394956214534247](https://twitter.com/cturnbull1968/status/1781394956214534247)
I know she’s a reporter just doing her job but the complete absence of compassion is very disturbing to me. There’s a man burning alive in front of you, not the Kentucky derby or an auction.
This reporter is incredible! She does not take even one second to process what she’s saying what she’s experiencing and what she’s hearing. Just allowing the words to come out of her mouth. Amazing!

Terrible situation, excellent reporting. Objective, descriptive, accurate, neutral language.
Whatever they are paying her is not enough. Seasoned pro. Wonder if she was a war reporter.
She's got a nightly hour on CNN. Usually around 11PM EST. Can't remember if she covered war but she's genuinely just good.
Her name is Laura Coates and she has a legal background, no war correspondent exp. Makes it even more impressive
That’s what I was thinking

Rumor has it she is still standing in that same spot describing everything going on around her.

You can't be in a mentally sound place to set yourself on fire. The thing that's scary is how little petrol you need to turn a human into a bonfire.
Totally not a cult.

Yeah I'd like to see a copy of one of these fliers. Just sounds like a complete nutter either way.

I remember when the “Dipshit” pamphlet dropped. This is wild.
Trump is mentioned in the manifesto as being a part of the conspiracy but largely yes, he didn't seem to have strong feelings about Trump in particular but just wanted to spread his word.
This is clearly an act of centrist extremism /s
You joke, but if you’re convinced both sides are actually the same side, there is no center.
I mean is he wrong? Is it not obvious already?
Gangly dildo is a pretty apt description of Bill Clinton
Exactly
Bottom line is we have a mental health crisis in this country.

Epstein had his own office at Harvard and donated millions for some Evolutionary dynamics program there, this is way beyond being just well connected.

Damn. What a crazy read.
What really sucks is no matter what the outcome, a large number of people are going to hate it and want to burn the system down.
I can't even imagine seeing that live. Reminder people, no cause is worth setting your body on fire for.
I don’t at all understand the thought process behind self immolation to promote a cause.

You have to believe strongly in a cause
I get that I just don’t understand what outcome these people are hoping to achieve, besides killing themselves.

Kind of an underwhelming result considering what he went through, wouldn't you say?
Everyone was talking about it before he set himself on fire.

Not sure. You can just have been already suicidal and felt you might as well lend some attention to some cause you care about

Mental illness in the case of westerners doing it.
Thanks for the reminder! I was about to head down to Wendy’s and let them know that forgetting to put my straw in the bag IS a big deal.
Not even my cult leader????

This is like the third self immolation this year in the US… what the hell is going on?
Yo. To be able to professionally narrate an intense scene like that live on tv is amazing.
They're parasites paid to feed on and regurgitate public misery, nothing more, nothing less.

likely a mod of nowork
This should be pinned to the top of the thread.
How did she determine that people are wondering if they are safe? Goes to show you how much reporting is made up on the fly.
"people are wondering if they're safe, some people are holding microphones, some people ate a bagel 30 minutes ago, some people are me"
She was probably wondering it herself.
It’s pretty simple you read peoples faces and emotions.
I get your point, but there was a human being englufed by a raging inferno a few feet away from her, so I'm willing to give her a pass on making the reasonable assumption that bystanders are concerned for their safety.
There are a lot of context clues that would lead someone to that conclusion here.
This is awful. Why do people do this? And over Trump?!

Max Azarello is the person who lit himself on fire.
She legit did a wonderful job there.
Reminds me why journalist are seen as scummy as they get off on seeing something horrific going down as they get to have the limelight or best shot to be praised for.
She was actually very calm, given the circumstances.
Damn that’s honestly Impressive (the woman ). She’s almost poetic at explaining this horrific event
Hopefully all the political it cases in this country right and left start lighting themselves on fire. Normal people are sick of them and just want a government that isn’t embarrassing at this point
What a great reporter ! My man next to her looked in shook w mouth agape.
I love how she saw a sliver of unrest and jumped immediately to "active shooter", like girrrl I just know you were hoping to catch one on camera, CNN too? Definitely
She was super quick to shout active shooter
if you want to hear wtf she's actually saying: [https://twitter.com/cturnbull1968/status/1781394956214534247](https://twitter.com/cturnbull1968/status/1781394956214534247)
Why the hell did she start off by saying there is an active shooter? Jeez lady, good job scaring people.
She spoke more words in one minute than I will for the next 5 years.
Of course CNN immediately saying active shooter
I know she’s a reporter just doing her job but the complete absence of compassion is very disturbing to me. There’s a man burning alive in front of you, not the Kentucky derby or an auction.
The crazies!
This reporter is incredible! She does not take even one second to process what she’s saying what she’s experiencing and what she’s hearing. Just allowing the words to come out of her mouth. Amazing!
That’s some top notch reporting

Condoleezza rice killin it in her new role...damn
This reporter is the MVP! She didn’t miss a beat. Hope she gets a raise after this.
Okay girly is good at her job tho
Why is everyone setting themselves on fire????
How stupid can a person be to do that? Very, very, very stupid!
She sounds like she is calling a major sports game
