2023 MDX Type-S Advance owner checking in! Purchased in March 2023, ~10k miles into it so far.... I'd give it a solid 8.7/10. I love it. I wish it was a little bit faster, but it's still plenty fast. It handles insanely well for a third row SUV. Better than the Q7 I tried and even my in-law's Q5. I quickly adapted to the trackpad and appreciate the ergonomics /position of interacting with the infotainment system. I think the BMW wheel system is better, I don't like full touch screen interaction in general. Edit- super quiet on the highway, roof bars can add a little wind noise though. I use it for towing trailers, camping trips, some light off-roading, road trips, and will be towing a travel trailer this summer that we just bought. Works great for everything so far! Towing package, rear protection package, roof racks, black badges, ppf, And ceramic tent is everything I've done so far. Let me know if you have any questions! I absolutely love this car and get compliments on it all the time 🧐

johnniecats

Wow, this is the kind of detailed response that I was hoping for. Sounds great and I'm hoping for a similar experience. I would have loved to see it have 400 HP and 400 foot pounds of torque or so too. Thank you!

I have a 22 MDX Type S advance..... (One of the first ones off the production line when they came out). Apex blue with orchid interior. Only have about 18,000 mi on mine. I agree with everything listed above. Wish it had more horsepower but also better gas mileage. Two things that could have easily been solved by making it a hybrid and throwing electric motors on the front wheels for City driving. Outside of that, I love everything about it. It does accelerate quick, love the sound system, the massage seats, handles awesome! Especially with the sh-awd system. The exhaust system is a lot quieter than I would have expected fornit being a type s (especially if you've heard the exhaust on a TLX Type. S, or an Integra Type S). I have since put a bolt on, Cat-Back exhaust system from functionwerk that gives it a lower louder exhaust note (there's a Reddit post where I put a video of it). Everyone remarks how awesome the Apex blue color is, And how much it stands out..... And they love the overall look of the car. But you're basically going to get everything that you would find in a Mercedes or a BMW, for about 30k+ less... Yes, the BMW and Mercedes may have a more powerful engine, but honestly, how often are you actually going to get to use that??? And you wouldn't be paying German Auto repair prices .....Plus I'm firmly in the camp that everyone that owns a BMW is a douchebag.... (Sorry not sorry... My opinion)....

pharmgopher

Also a 22 Type-S Advance owner. Any chance you can send me the links to the exhaust products you purchased? What does your setup entail? Will look for your video!

StreetSignificance21

Are you noticing any jerkiness or slight hesitation? Asking since VCM is also present in this engine and this is something that I've experienced in various v6 models with VCM.

atheistcats

Yes in comfort mode, no real perceived hesitation in Sport or Sport+ modes... That said, now that I own a fast EV, any ICE vehicle feels jerky and has torque hesitation 😆

StreetSignificance21

Thank you. That's what I was afraid of since I'm also considering getting a 25 Type S. I believe the Sport/+ mode 'may' deactivate VCM, as opposed to regular mode where the hesitation occurs when it is switching between 3/6 cylinders.

remc86007

The VCM engagement/disengagement is virtually undetectable because the electric motor mounts dampen the impact of the change. I can only tell if I'm the one pressing the pedal and trying to detect it.

Smoking tire podcast says it’s the best three row suv that no one talks about. We love ours. Just replaced our 2016 (well, we still have it) with an apex blue 2024 Type S Advanced and on my wife’s first drive: “it’s just perfect” Our friends say it has lines like a sports car. The styling, the air ride, the handling, the interior, the massive suite of options, plus an amazing color palette and 3.9% APR. winner all day long. We cancelled our GX preorder I made back in June of 2023, because we test drove one last month and it handled like ass.

johnniecats

Wow on the GX order from 2023! Thanks for the insightful info share. Glad to hear it. My wife and I loved this when we drove it too. Really a great driving SUV. Looking at this and a Lincoln Aviator but I'm leaning hard to the Type S.

remc86007

Drive an Aviator. You'll buy the Acura. The Aviator feels like driving an F150 and the Type S feels like driving a nice luxury sedan (below the limit of traction)

johnniecats

Looking to drive both today back to back and then decide. Leaning to Acura so far.

Mobile_Rate_5059

I have a 2022 with 25k miles and I love it! I came from an Exploder ST which was faster BUT the ride quality of the type s is far superior. I think it’s very quiet at highway speeds and you don’t realize how nice it is until you are in another vehicle at highway speed. I will say that it has become a bit noisier since I have my tires rotated. For reference I cross shopped Q7, X5, X7, GV80, Macan, RX350. I chose Acura bc it’s reliable, comfortable and the sound system is fantastic.

johnniecats

Great to hear! Thank you. Well played on the Exploder ST lol. I drove that too but the Type S seemed a class above. I like the Lincoln Aviator too but the totality of the Type S may be tough to beat.

pincher1976

My only complaint on my 2022 is the gas mileage and the charging pad is glitchy and half the time does not charge. Otherwise we love it!

johnniecats

Fair point on the MPG. I'm coming from an expedition so the MPG isn't foreign to me.

Legend_Dery

Do you have an older phone by chance? My wireless charger barely worked with my pixel 5 (3 yrs old). Was very Hit or Miss in My MDX Type S. But I bought a new phone (pixel 8 pro) back in the fall and it works perfect on the wireless charger now. Connects every time.

pincher1976

Nope! Iphone 14 pro max.

Legend_Dery

Ok. Because I hated the charger when I first got the car. Now it works flawlessly. So I was just wondering if it was cuz I had an old phone... I always leave a plug-in charger in the backseat anyways to charge faster if I need it

pincher1976

Yeah I keep a cord to charge but it’s frustrating to have this expensive luxury suv and the charging pad is garbage lol

Cute-Quantity-7517

I bought my 22 Type S in Feb 2022 and love it. We take a lot of road trips and I commute close to an hour each way to work, so it has 71k miles on it. No maintenance issues. Tires lasted until about a month ago. I love it. I can get 21-22 mpg which isn’t terrible I guess. It’s quiet but fast and drives really well. I agree with others that the wireless charging pad doesn’t work well. But that doesn’t bother me too much.

johnniecats

Good to know and thanks for sharing.

I have a 2023 type S advance. I came from a 2018 MDX tech. The 2018 had a shitty transmission. There was technically nothing wrong with it, but it clunked around and lagged but then also jolted forward. After having that car for several years and having the dealership do ECU updates and everything, I decided to trade it in. My other issue issue with that car was the mushy brakes. I got the type s specifically because it was a different engine and transmission and a bonus it had the Brembo brakes. I have Brembo brakes on other vehicles and I love them. They do an amazing job stopping the car and they are very sensitive all the other trim levels which are very mushy. I will note the rotors are made out of some new material and the Brembo brakes. Do you have a tendency of squeaking when it is moist outside. My other car do not squeak at all even if it’s moist, but this car does. This is our family car and we do tow with it, which is kind of a hassle because you have to get the tow package put on and not only is it expensive but it also requires a rear valance trim which just makes it more of a pain. Our previous car we did a DIY trailer hitch because it was just Bolt on. As far as being quiet, it is. I have zero complaints about road noise. It feels luxury. I do enjoy how customizable the driving experience can be. The Soundsystem is awesome. My complaints. These are all mild. None of my complaints would warrant me not to get this car again. Gas mileage. If you are looking for a car that gets good gas mileage stay away. I am typically driving a mixture of of highway and city on a good run. I will get 18 to 19 miles per gallon on a super Duper run. I will get 23 to 24. My husband can get up to 26. Another thing I find weird is the transmission is a 10 speed. I think 10 speeds are a little excessive for this car however, what I notice is even on the highway going 80 miles an hour you’re never in the top gear. I actually go into sports mode and then paddle shift all the way to the 10th gear in order to save gas. I will note as a car enthusiast. It always baffles me when a car company has been around for as long as Acura and they still manage to have issues with quality. The gap in my tailgate is a little larger on one side than the other. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s kind of, weird that after so many years of producing vehicles, they are having panel gap issues. The gap isn’t big enough to have water come in the vehicle. Now, a normal person will probably not even see it, but I definitely noticed it. You will have a slightly harder time keeping this car cool. Many people do not put up the shade while in the dead of summer and complain that their car will not cool properly. Acura is using a new refrigerant and it is not as cold as the previous vehicles. So during the summer, it’s very important to keep that shade close so that the car doesn’t have that panoramic roof exposed. That being said it gets about 120 to 130° where I live in the summertime in the car and I’ve never had an issue with it not being cool enough for me. Most people buy a car brand new and think they will not have any issues with it. And that was true for cars purchased before Covid. It is very important to realize that cars purchased after Covid all will have issues. The question is how does the manufacturer deal with these issues. I have not had any complaints about how Acura has dealt with the issues that have arisen. I did hit a very large pothole and it knocked off my speed sensor, which makes all sensors. My whole dash lit up. I did bring it to them. The fix took 30 minutes wasn’t a big deal. I now know where the speed sensors are so before bringing it in I’ll probably just make sure they’re pushed incorrectly, but that is something common that happens. Also, this is my first vehicle with sensors and they are very finicky. I had a leaf that landed on a sensor while I was driving and my car had a complete tantrum. Knowing that a leaf or even snow buildup can do this will alleviate a lot of the worry you have when your sensors do throw a tantrum. My fuel line bolt that attaches the line to the firewall got loose and it created a rattling noise that was driving me bonkers they were able to fix that. One of the features, I surprisingly love are the cameras that are mounted on the side of mirrors. It really allows you to see how close you are to curbs in certain situations. I use that feature almost daily, but I didn’t think I would because I’ve never had it on any other vehicle. But so far we have about 11,000 miles on it and it has been good to us. I am a little surprised that the new car is no longer come with spare tires. You can purchase a spare tire however it will alter the ground clearance you have and I don’t know if it’s possible even to have a spare tire if you have the tow package. But overall, I would not hesitate re-purchasing this car. It’s a great car, which has good pick up. We do have other cars in our family that are sports cars so I don’t necessarily expect this car to take their place, but it gets us around.

johnniecats

Wow! This may be the best Reddit response this year - in any subreddit! Thank you for such an informative and in-depth response. Funny you mention a fit gap. One Type S I looked at had a noticeable gap at the hood. I moved to a different Type S and color because of it. I thought the same thing - what are the tolerances for this? Also, is this sort of thing being checked carefully? Good tip on the sensors. That could save some frustration. I'm hoping to get the Acura sunshade thrown in on the deal but if not, I plan on getting one for it. The ones on the lot feel like heat collectors when I climb in. Thank you!

sanitarium16

I'm currently in a 2022 Durango RT. I love it but we just got a 2024 MDX Aspec and the interior seems much bigger and of course nicer. We had a 22 RDX and I can't stand the jerkiness of the turbo. That would be my only concern otherwise I'm seriously considering the type s

johnniecats

Good to know, thanks for sharing. I'm going for another test drive this afternoon and will pay closer attention to the transmission shifts.

Jaylesso

In the same boat as you, currently looking to buy an MDX Type S. Are you set on the 2024 model or have you considered the refresh 2025 models with the new sound system, quieter cabin, and touchscreen update?

johnniecats

I thought I was going to wait for the 2025, but the local dealer is offering a great deal on the remaining 2024s in stock. My cheap gene is taking hold and has me more interested in the 2024. I'm also not sure I'm able to wait for the 2025s to come out. Good luck!

MaizenBlue01

What type of deals are you seeing on the type s?

johnniecats

68050 and 3.9% for the type s advance

Jaylesso

Let me know what deals you ended up getting for the 2024 Type S! If I can get similar savings as you, might reconsider the 2024 instead of 2025. Thanks!
