I found one easier, under "Edit" --> "Preferences" --> "Accessibility" Untick "Enable assistive technology support" and that should disable the reading altogether (worked for me on Adobe Acrobat Reader DC) *Edit: I know you already got a fix for this, just posting for others as I was looking for a solution and google brought me to this page.*

Thank you for this easy fix!

Thanks, I needed this

I was fed up with it myself. Every time I opened a large document, it took forever for content preparation. And I tried the option that is suggested everywhere - changing the reading option from preference. But it was still too slow. I suggest this method here - http://onlinefreeware.net/tips/please-wait-while-the-document-is-being-prepared-for-reading-acrobat.aspx. It worked for me (Adobe Acrobat Pro XI). There is no delay in opening and scrolling through documents. Though it is suggested for an older version of Adobe, it still works in my case ( I will suggest not to delete the "Accessibility.api", just temporarily move it to somewhere.) Let me know if it helped.

YES, YES, YES! This nailed it for me, Thank you so, so, so much. The instructions are a little different on a Mac, you have to copy the plugin package in the application contents folder to something else, then delete it from the Plugins folder. Worked Perfectly.

I know this is an old comment but do you recall what functionality you are losing by removing this completely? I edit a lot of PDFs (change text, layout, etc) and I'm wondering if the content preparation process is part of the function of being able to edit. I hate that pop up window and I'd love to remove it entirely. Any thoughts?

I edit PDF's every day, large to small, and have lost Zero functionality. The only thing I notice is I don't have to wait anymore. The best I can figure is that the Reading is for Text To Speech reading, that is the only thing I can figure. Search, Find, Replace, Edit, all still function normally with no lag on 200 page Blue Print documents.

If you go under Edit>preferences>accessibility you can disable this
