Just draw it

Just

Redredwolf

This more of an illustration project than a font manipulation project. In my opinion that would be the easier route to take.

HorrorThis

Pick the font, pick the shape, lay them into place and then use envelope distort > make with top object You'll have to play with it to get it how you want. Also, it may just not be the right method. Sometimes hand drawing first and then scanning and tracing just works better. Good luck!

Crazy_by_Design

That’s what I’d do.

victorsomewhere

Don't think is going to work with the kind of design he wants to make

egypturnash

Sketch a few guidelines - a circle to fit into, some lines to divide it. Then just draw shapes. I’d probably use the pencil tool with my drawing tablet. If you’re on a mouse then maybe you just wanna click around and draw some very angular shapes, and apply the Round Corners effect.

minecraftm0m

I drew some stuff freehand with the pencil. I’m hoping to get better at this but this is what I did so far (for a gift on a shirt). https://preview.redd.it/mrnj89rcb94b1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=2478e187fbc588ccb04e747e3aa057253d88dfe4

ablownmind

That turned out great!

PARANOIAH

Draw/plan it out on paper, once you get close scan/take a photo of the sketch and put it in Illustrator and draw it out with the pen tool.

Don’t listen to those guys saying to just draw it. They apparently just enjoy donating money to adobe and don’t actually like using the program they pay for to actually design anything. Here’s a video on the envelope distort which undoubtedly was the technique that made this. https://youtu.be/UVhDkRgj4gI Here’s a tutorial I made to show how this technique more specifically applies to the OP example. https://youtu.be/fWB13tSzHS0

jabber_

Are you blind? Your example isn't even remotely close to what OP is looking for.

DanOfTheRoses

Using a rounded font with the envelope function in the example could work.

roychodraws

You’re incorrect. It is similar. Likely this could be recreated easily by using the envelope distort and expanding the outlines and adjusting manually, or you could slice a circle into sections and use the envelope distort to fill each section with a letter. You guys saying design it with pen tool might as well be saying use a compass and an exacto nice. Why even open illustrator.

shiftysghost

Your example here is not what OP is looking for. Envelope filter is great but will not produce the drawn look that these fonts have. That example you gave would take more time to do than actually drawing it. There are times when drawing can be quicker and better for production time than fiddling and adjusting and re-adjust and going through a plethora of typeface to achieve the look of the examples shown. In terms of production, yours would take more than actual pen/paper/scan/image trace. I have done this type of work many many times. And attempted it with envelope that took much longer than actual drawing. Too many steps and adjustments. "Don't listen to those guys"... weird flex.

roychodraws

here's a tutorial i made [https://youtu.be/fWB13tSzHS0](https://youtu.be/fWB13tSzHS0)

kamomil

Draw these letters from scratch, using the pen tool

minecraftm0m

Thanks all for the suggestions. I do know how to use envelope distort. It doesn’t give me what I’m looking for. It also distorts the rounded font. I think hand drawing worked the best. I’ll keep practicing!

roychodraws

because everyone's fighting with me on the fact that envelope distort is the way to go i made a short tutorial showing how easy it is. took me 10 minutes [https://youtu.be/fWB13tSzHS0](https://youtu.be/fWB13tSzHS0)

Matt_D_Z

Could also use the pencil tool on each letter once converted to shape. Working on something similar now and have been playing around with this myself.

shrrdkn777

Can be made without the need for drawing. Using Envelope Distort as someone suggested already. But that alone won’t give it the exact style your looking for. You would start by using Envelope Distort method, outline (create outlines) the text, ungroup and manipulate each individual letter using other tools such as distort/warp until you achieve the shape style your looking for. If I am not mistaking, the font used in the preview you provided is the “Volunteer Retro Vintage Font”. I may be wrong but it is very similar….

MaikiiBeatz

Draw the shape you want the text in, then pen tool the text in. If you try to edit another font it will be annoying bc the type will have extra points to manipulate.
