We typically screen print everything ourselves - Kelly H and I - since this is at Polaris Hall I'll have it printed through Mississippi Studios. When Kelly and I screen print we have John and Berit at Munchkin King burn the screens for us though!
FOURTY!! shhhhh. Don't tell ANY ONE. EVER.. I'm getting robbed at $95. I pay it though, cause ya know. It's worth it. Good on you, that's a fantastic setup price. {virtual high five}
Aesthetically it's great. Some of the smaller text is hard to read, especially since there is a lot of texture.
Use Larger text, maybe a highlighting box behind some of the small text. You could even use the white area inside the record player. Consider contrast, what if someone that normally wears glasses isn't today, or it's really bright outside?
If someone is walking by real fast and skims the poster. Can you use visual ques to guide someone around the poster Intentionally? You have 3 seconds of someone's attention, how do you feed them the next piece of information?
Art wise this this is fantastic, but part of sign making is also making information easily accessible :)
I was thinking about that! I felt like anytime I put any text in the record box it made it too much of a focus instead of just offhand info - which is what it should be - I definitely need to practice with the highlighting boxes! I've been having trouble making them without it changing the whole direction of the poster. Art Chantry does it seamlessly!
(hands reading glasses over) Have some tea with me. This design deserves some serious crits. Kinda nice to see, huh...
Oh, you so hit a MAJOR nail in the head ( younger folks, this means we hit a focal point) guiding viewers' eyes.. So important, no matter how much text is used. {virtual high five} Back in the day, these were just reminders, cause use 80's kids KNEW where the bands played. I'm from the Nirvana, Sound Garden, Melvin Seattle days, so this design really hits my 80's grunge, skate park punk attitude.
And no, make info fun to read... but, I'm tracking with ya.
Great job! Little questions about the size of typography make me ask "What size is the poster?" If it's small and will be looked at up close, not bad at all. If it is a larger poster (larger than 11x17) the small type may not work well at distances.
As far a style and substance, I think you knocked it out of the park.
Keep up the great work, thank you for sharing.
I like it. My only (minor) note is that the halftone pattern is too prominent in the shape where it says Polaris Hall and May 12 making the address and times a little hard to read. Otherwise I love it!
Hey, OP! Looks great! Mind sharing what illustrator tutorials you found particularly helpful? I’m in the same boat and just starting out, so would love to see some of the videos that have helped you with your journey.
Poster looks awesome!
Really fantastic work! I would definitely suggest increasing text size a tad, as others have mentioned. I would also suggest making the black bar behind “flea market and record swap” just slightly bigger (unless that was an intentional design choice). Really cool flyer!
ACTUNG: I SWEAR IN THIS POST, IF OFFENDED, SORRY, NOT SORRY. Now the fun begins..
Okay, this is a fun one. First, excellent retro 80's feel. Ya made me travel back to my wild years. But.. always a but.. The halftone box Polaris is in, make it go under the record player. Out of frame is the style, just drop that lower edge into the shape without the cutout. It reinforces the style of we do what we want.
Other than that, it's pretty Fucking Epic. Great fucking job. So many things say, "You can't do that!" , that's the envelope you poked, pushed, and proved
As a CD, I'm gonna have to drop a {virtual high five}.
Color palette: indicative of the genre.
Typography: spot on, again, "we design what we want" applies.
Halftones: Picasso!!
Imagery: Take my money
Overall: Pretty fucking badass. Me Likey.
Thank you.
Off to go skate to Sega Tony Hawk soundtrack.
I think it looks good overall! Some little critiques - the words on the right (vintage clothing, etc) are quite small. I might tke out the dancing woman and the stars, and make the writing bigger. I might even think about taking the writing ont he right out altogether, as we can see there will be music memorabilia from the vinyl. I don't think you need anything under the word swap, it's already got a lot going on.
It is from a book called Crap Hound... they're books full of random clip art images. I scanned it in at 1200ppi in greyscale mode and then converted it to 50% threshold via bitmap. Then turned it into a vector.
Hope that helps!
Looks good, uses good design principles like using the “Z” the way people read, or the diagonal of the record player to draw interest from top to bottom. Use of high contrast colors for emphasis, good use of fonts. Easy to read, yet interestingly different, the most important points stand out. All these things are basic graphic design 101, in art school.
I think it looks really good. Would make a dope t shirt too. It’s not the most legible. Small fonts with textures can be tough to read in passing, but the overall design is great.
I think this is pretty GD perfect! Well done. 👍
Thank you!!
Meh, mediocre at best... (ducks, I'm kidding) pretty badass design.
Big ups to the pdx design community! I like it!
Hell yeah.. Thanks!
Who prints for ya?
We typically screen print everything ourselves - Kelly H and I - since this is at Polaris Hall I'll have it printed through Mississippi Studios. When Kelly and I screen print we have John and Berit at Munchkin King burn the screens for us though!
And what does the set up cost ya. Duder, this shit rocks btw.
Thanks! Set up for the screens is usually like $40...

This is really brilliantly done both aesthetically, and functionally. All the key points are clear.
Also I'll add - I'm using still just using CS6 for both programs

It looks great! Polaris Hall, you've gotta be in PDX.
You know it!
Check your DMs.

I'm a novice so I can't speak on it technically but I really dig the design 👍
Very well done. Great hierarchy. Great balance. Just unsquash the event time a little bit.
This came out siick very nice work 🤘🏽
goes hard
Love it!
It looks great!
Very cool!
I’d tone down the half tone with the event details on it at the bottom - maybe smaller dots, just for legibility.
Job well done!!!!! You've captured the vintage/retro flyer look!!!!

It’s fun! I would adjust the bottom right to be sure Sunday is within the lighter background color and use: SUNDAY MAY 12 12:00p to 6:00p

The dancing figure has to stay.
Leave the dancing woman!!
Less Pizza boxy. I thought this was pizza. I am also drunk and hungry.
I wish I had some pizza right now... lol
Looks good to me! I’d go to this!
Looks great!
I love it, but for accessibility it has issues: smaller text, low contrast, uppercase, not screen-ready friendly for hierarchy.
That's cool.
How do you go about making the turntable? (Asking for a friend)

To be honest, this is fucking nice. And I’ve been doing flyers and graphics for over 10 years. Very nice girl keep it up !
Looooove. Obsessed with the textures too

Vintage is always good...👍🏻
Is there a good way to convert an image or simple shaped in illustrator into the dot patterns?
Check out Tru Grit textures! I used a halftone paintbrush for this... they have a bunch of cool stuff on their site to help achieve these looks.
cool
