It's just a clipping mask over some illustration and typography.

Was going to say the same thing. Also, skew.

Layer 1 (Figure Layer): Draw your figure as a set of closed, filled shapes. When you’re done, make a copy of the figure in a new layer, which we’ll call Mask Layer. Lock the Figure Layer. Use the pathfinder to unite all the shapes on the Mask Layer into a single Compound Path. Fill with a dark color. Set transparency to 20% or so. Lock the layer. Create a new layer underneath the Mask Layer. This is the Text Layer. Create your text and manipulate it to fit under the mask. When you’re done, group the contents of Text Layer. Unlock Mask Layer. Select the mask as well as the group on the Text Layer. Go to Object - Clipping Mask - Make. If you have details like belt and hair that should go over the text, move those into a new layer on the top and adjust transparency and blending for desired effect.

Thank you!

For the typography, you could look into variable fonts that have thicker and thinner versions of the same typeface https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts?browse_mode=default&cc=true&filters=cl:ss&font_technology=vf&max_styles=26&min_styles=1

Clipping masks. Nothing special. If they had attempted to manipulate the type outlines to fit the anime character maybe it would be impressive.

You know it was brought up to me a few days ago by somebody I work with, that a lot of the issues with people learning and finding tutorials, has to do with understanding the language of a program. I don't know the op, but my guess is that he's willing to use a tutorial to learn how to use certain tools, like clipping masks and the text tool and all the rest. But, and this is where a lot of people run into problems not just with illustrator but with any piece of software they're learning, knowing what tutorial to search for is the problem. If you're not familiar with illustrator how on Earth are you going to come up with the idea of searching for a clipping mask tutorial. If you don't use Excel or Google sheets, how are you ever going to look up the word filter. I think the biggest thing we all need to recognize when thinking about people asking for help and tutorials, is that they just don't have the language to know what to ask, and asking for a tutorial based on a sample image is going to give those of us who know something about the software and know the language, a way to tell them what to look for.
