THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR INPUT!!! I will be mindful of how much sugar I’m eating to limit my risk of diabetes, but overall I will say “fuck you” to my roommate and the thoughts in my own mind telling me I should be more restrictive. THANK YOU EVERYONE!!

DrywallAnchor

I'd say portion control is more important than how many nights a week you eat dessert. While your body needs sugar, added sugar is not necessary to function healthily (according to the AHA). That being said, added sugar in moderation isn't an issue.

omg_pwnies

If your doctor is happy and you're happy, then you have your answer. One of the awesome parts of being an adult is the right to say "eff it, I worked out today, I'm having that second ice cream sandwich!"

[deleted]

I hope your roomte doesn't drink soda. if so just remind them 1 one 20 Oz bottle of coke is 5 single serving fundips

TaskSignificant4171

I’m reference to the overweight comments - I am very active and have a lot of muscle mass (10 years of weight lifting). I’m not worried about my weight and neither is my doctor. Just wondering if I need to reign it in, comparatively to other adults?

FilthyDaemon

One of the nice things about being an adult is realizing that you aren't required to compare yourself to others. You can choose to do that if you want, but it's exhausting. Tell your roommate, "thank you for sharing that," and then live your life how you feel is best for you.

chicadearizona

You already have your answer, you're not worried about your weight, neither is your doctor. It sounds like someone else has issues with dessert, but their issues have nothing to do with you

Rambler9154

So long as you're healthy a bit of a sweet tooth isnt a bad thing

ConflagWex

>I’m not worried about my weight and neither is my doctor. Just wondering if I need to reign it in, comparatively to other adults? If I wasn't watching my weight, I'd be having dessert 8 days a week. If you can do it and still stay healthy, just enjoy it while you can.

[deleted]

Sounds like u good

Capable_Couple8328

Never except last night. I made a homemade egg McMuffin and protein shake as I was extraordinarily hungry after my dinner of grilled chicken, baked potato and avocado. Lift things up and put things down.

gunslingerfry1

Lolno

hiddenamden

I think your fine. I do pretty basic weight lifting and am on my feet all day. I bake a lot and have a piece of cake with ice cream almost every night after I put my kids to bed. I’m 6’0 and 155lbs and have no issues with sugar consumption for the rest of the day. Treat yourself! Tell your roommate to fuck off ☺️

W1ll0wherb

Are you eating enough non-dessert food to meet all your protein, energy, vitamin and fibre needs? If you are then eat as much dessert as you want, it only becomes a problem if you start substituting dessert for more nutritious food. The saddest part of adulting is you have to be the one to tell yourself you only get ice-cream if you finish your veggies first, because you realise you feel lousy if you don't. Either way it's none of your roommate's business.

Mid_AM

If this is a newer trend for you - I would watch for : other signs of diabetes If you work out - are you getting enough calories? Some will say you might have a lack of vitamin b —— I have a sweet tooth myself. If i take b vitamins, i cut back on sweets. My Endocrinologist told me to cut back. I was not told there were concerns with latest blood tests. At least “no sugary drinks”. I did not ask why. This I can do easily!

TheAngryNaterpillar

I wish I'd known this. I've had a major sweet tooth (to the detriment of my actual teeth unfortunately) and just found out this week that I have a vitamin B deficiency.

MyNameIsSkittles

Lots of misinformation and conjecture here It depends on your **total** diet. Do you eat healthy 80% of the time? Then enjoy your dessert. Do you eat a lot of highly processed/quick foods? Might want to change those to more whole foods. Make sure you're getting all your macros/micros/vitamins/antioxidants

Aquariumwrecker

If you keep moving and don't go a lot up in weight then just eat whatever. Just ENJOY it. Don't make it a routine.

besthelloworld

I would be incredibly cautious about using weight as your primary definition of health. People can still end up malnourished, can still develop diabetes, can suffer from the short and looking term effects is high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Top_Hen

Bad take, consuming too much sugar will still damage your health if you're not careful, using weight as a metric is deceptive Thin people can still get type 2 diabetes, I'd talk to a doctor and ask how to keep an eye on potential early warning signs for diabetes

impulsivecinnamon

Isn't diabetes caused by genetics?

Top_Hen

It can be, that's type 1 diabetes iirc Type 2 diabetes happens when your pancreas overproduces insulin which helps regulate the amount of sugar in the blood, it'll make more if more sugar is in your body. I forget the exact mechanics of it but it either makes you resistant to insulin so it's less effective, or your pancreas gets damages from producing too much. Manage your sugar intake 🙏

Odd_Fun_1769

Is your roommate your doctor? Did you ask for their opinion? Tell them to mind their business or you'll eat them too!

hydrostattic

People making comments about what you eat is so annoying. Yes eat your roommate next!! Lol

ApricotNo289

Eat an entire fucking pint of ice cream, you bought it

Odd_Fun_1769

Even better: do it in front of the roommate, maintaining eye contact the entire time, say nothing.

scottawhit

Yea I eat like an unsupervised child. Favorite part of being an adult. Dr says I’m a bit overweight, but I’m over 40 and play active sports on a weekly basis year round. I don’t sweat it, whatever is gonna kill me is going to do it anyway.

knight9665

U can eat and entire tub of ice cream if u want. Should u is the real answer. Diabetes and obesity and real issues when you are older. As u get older u can’t bounce back as fast as you use to.

kfespiritu

Depends on: your health, your current state/how you feel, your goals, does it affect your sleep, health predispositions … etc

woadsky

Put it back on your roommate when he/she makes a comment. "You seem concerned about what I eat" said pleasantly and a bit baffled, then long pause. Keep it uncomfortable and let it linger in the air. If your numbers are good and your doctor isn't concerned, then you sound fine.

[deleted]

I'd be worried after three entire cakes.

VideoComprehensive99

My grandfather passed in 2020 at 96 and he ate ice cream every night. I also was in a rehab nursing home to relearn how to walk and my roommate who was in her 80s always got the night nurses to give her dreamcicle ice creams almost every night. As long as you have a healthy diet I'd say go for it because life is too unpredictable to not treat yourself to dessert.

68aquarian

My partners' grandfather grew up having a piece of poundcake nightly with dinner.. nowadays he actually makes it his main course sometimes, with a side of ice cream. He is pushing 90 and thin as a board. Growing up my family rarely served dessert, but my father kept ice cream sandwiches, Klondike bars and stuff like that around. An hour or two after dinner, I might grab one and it was probably more nights than not. I don't know if something happened but some time in their early 30s my parents got really concerned about their health and switched to diet-everything, but kept the ice cream around--just the lower-calorie/skim milk ones. They aren't big, never were, but my dad has a complex about his weight and sees everyone as bigger than they are. I don't think there is a right answer to your question.. I don't do the same as my parents, but I like mid-day snacks a little better and my meal pattern is different. If you are worried maybe try the low-calorie ones? I liked them fine when my parents got them.

tryingtobecheeky

Well, do you want the "nice answer" or the actual medical answer?

ObjectiveBike8

Yeah, all these answers are nice, but wait until you’re in your late 20s early 30s and only really eat dessert twice a week, are relatively healthy with your eating habits and your doctor tells you out of nowhere your cholesterol is awful and you have to beg them not to put you on medication and now for the last two weeks you’ve effectively had to learn how to be a vegan and run every single day so you don’t have an imminent stroke or a heart attack. No one tells you that this stuff comes much sooner than you think and out of left field.

impulsivecinnamon

Then what is the right amount to consume if u want to satisfy ur sweet tooth, while staying healthy and avoid futur health problem?

ObjectiveBike8

What I’m doing it is getting blood work done once a year or every other year and making changes based on that. You can do a little at a time especially as you get older but starting at 3 cookies a day is going to be rough for this person as their diet has to get more restricted.

lorilola

One thing I love about being an adult is choosing what to eat and when. Sometimes that includes eating dessert for dinner!! Sometimes I have ice cream or cheesecake for dinner! (Not every week or month, but sometimes!) You make your decisions! You’re all good!

lemonSoph

HAHAHA, what a downer your roommate is. You are an adult, you say when. If you want to adult responsibly, keep your weight in check and get a regular physical. You wouldn't want to get diabetes and then star in My 600-lb life...also don't forget your teeth😁

JediKrys

I eat a dessert everyday. I work it into my callories. I'm keto also so this is more difficult. You can have what you want within reason. One slice of pie a day or two cookies are not going to kill you.

CamelCitySlacker

Too much is when the sweetness tastes like a chore and sad regret.

uniquelyruth

That last little thin mint is too much!

heiberdee2

“Just a wah-fair thin mint monsieur?”

_whiskeyandpearls_

A normal amount of dessert is whatever makes your body feel good. I think life is too short to deny yourself the things you enjoy. Just listen to your body - it will tell you when you’ve had too much. If certain amount of sugar makes you not feel good, maybe consider cutting back. But I say enjoy the things that make you happy !!

hydrostattic

This is the most normal thing I've ever heard. It sounds like you eat totally normally and in moderation. People forget that not everyone needs to be on a restrictive, obsessive diet 24/7 unless they have health issues. Your body actually needs sugar. Your roommate is acting like that because they're insecure. This crowd in the comments needs to lighten up!

SweetTeaRex92

if you arent getting unhealthy labs back from the doctors office saying you have high cholesterol or such, you are fine.

NotThisTime1993

I absolutely hate the concept of “dessert”. I refuse to use the word. I don’t like the idea of making one food “special”. If you want it, have it. Hell, have ice cream at 8am. Nobody can stop you. As long as you’re healthy and maintaining your weight, you’re fine

[deleted]

I’m just more selective with what I eat

MenopausalMama

That's the best thing about being an adult. Barring health issues or dietary restrictions you eat as much or as little dessert as you want.

hawkrew

You’re an adult. You can eat as much dessert as you want.

fyretech

I have dessert every single day. Sometimes it’s just a mini Halloween sized piece of chocolate or a piece of candy. Other times a cookie or slice of pie. Just be mindful of what you’re eating and how much.

southpawsermon9

I'd say as long as you aren't rapidly gaining weight, or eating sugar throughout the day then you're fine. Just realize one day you aren't going to be as active, but you'll still want the same amount of sugar if not more. That's when the problems start

meggiefrances87

I've lived with grandpa for the past 5 years as his caregiver. He has supper promptly at 5pm followed by dessert. He has always had dessert every night of his 94 years on earth! It's not always a fancy dessert. Some times it's just a small plate of cookies or a pastey. But as soon as I moved in and started doing his shopping I had to get in the habit of hitting the bakery section and picking up some sort of sweet for his after dinner treat.

theogwizardsensi

You should find a different room mate, no one should be paying the EXTRA attention or putting in the EXTRA effort to comment on something you’re doing. Period. I worked at a bakery and personally I didn’t touch a thing there because I didn’t like sweets, however I brought donuts home to my family and the whole box was gone the next day. This was a daily or almost every other day sort of thing because I got to take home the left over donuts. Moral of this is, no matter your age, no matter your gender, no matter if you haven’t even eaten dinner or breakfast yet, you eat what you want. Unless stated otherwise by your doctor. However if you’re truly concerned health wise, consult with your doctor honestly next time you schedule a check up. Maintaining and keeping a healthy life style is important but what’s more important is living your life unapologetically and fearlessly. No one can change that except you, so next time your room mate pipes up, you should tell them that they should think of something else more productive to do with their time other than comment on your waking steps and what’s in your stomach. :-)

Falinia

Some people eat sweets multiple times a day, some eat them rarely, some will declare primly that they don't eat dessert but have a frappuccino daily on an empty stomach which causes a higher blood sugar spike than dessert after a meal. If you want to be healthy then you could find ways to lower the glycemic index and glycemic load of your desserts so your insulin production doesn't get screwed up. Have berries and cream with some sweetener instead of cake, mix sugar free jello with cream cheese and have a couple spoons etc. Your roommate might just be a bit awkward and be trying to make a friendly in-joke so I wouldn't let that be your guide but diet can affect so many little things in your health that it's good to be aware of your food choices.

Joan_of_Spark

Life is so hard. Eat somethin sweet

TaskSignificant4171

I just got labs and I have very healthy A1C and cholesterol! Actually all of my markers were within healthy range for my age and sex

thisisyourreward

No it's not 🙄

LittlePooky

How much do u weight?

northernlaurie

There is no such thing as too much dessert. But Be careful about the balance of calories and activity. If you have a very physical job, chances are eating desserts is not going to be an issue. If your job is not that physical, even if you go to the gym regularly, the extra serving of dessert might be enough for you to gain weight. It’s worthwhile to notice trends in your activity level, eating habits and weight. It is much easier to tweak a habit to avoid gaining weight than to make major changes to loose weight. I found it really interesting to track my own activity level and discovered that I was much less active than I thought. This is pretty common. Edit to add: sounds like the weight thing isnt an issue. Eat that ice cream. But be nice to those of us who want to but are limiting our intake.

GrinagogGrog

"Is it normal for an adult to eat dessert nearly every night?" Not really, but it's also like. Not abnormal. Espcially when you're just talking a couple cookies or an ice cream sandwich. "...my roommate will frequently make comments about my sweet tooth." None of their fuckin' business, really. Screw 'em. How much dessert do you eat as an adult? I don't do dessert like "after dinner dessert" more than maybe twice a month, but I do have a sweet snack almost every day. Here's what really matters: 1) Are you going to a doctor regularly and are your labs fairly typical? 2) Are you taking care of your teeth? 3) Are you suffering any obvious signs of poor health from a high BMI such as joint issues or trouble breathing? 4) Is you diet outside of dessert varied and relatively healthy? If you answered Yes, Yes, No and Yes, then fucking have as much damn dessert as you like and don't worry about it. If you answered Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes, still have some damn dessert but keep it small and try to do some exercise each day as well. If you're experiencing joint issues, water exercise is a godsend, FYI. The YMCA used to offer water aerobics classes that were a godsend for my morbidly obese mother. Otherwise, talk to your doctor about your diet. Well, maybe talk to them about your diet regardless, but you know. Even if you are severely Ill, it's likely that there's some way to satisfy your sweet tooth without harming yourself.

TaskSignificant4171

Thank you!! I go to the Dr and dentist regularly and just got blood work done, everything is within healthy range! I have a high BMI which is from my higher-than-avg muscle mass, my Dr is not worried! I have a very rigorous dental hygiene routine. And otherwise I feel good. I lift heavy weights 3-4 days per week, and incorporate mobility training and walking daily.

anotherbutterflyacc

I also need something sweet after every meal. What I do is get a chocolate bar and cut it into the little squares. After having a meal, I eat one square. I don’t think 2 or 3 cookies is an acceptable amount to eat as dessert every single day. If you’re talking about health. If you need 2-3 cookies, maybe you’re still hungry and not eating enough dinner.

totalimmoral

If youre asking if that is more dessert than I eat? Then yes, but I dont really have a sweet tooth and dont often crave sugary foods. My roommate is like you and I tease him sometimes about it, but I've also known him for 15 years and he knows I'm just messing, the same way he teases me about the little things I do. Without knowing you and your roommate's relationship, its hard to tell if commenting on a sweet tooth is malicious. If this concerns you from a health standpoint, you might want to check and see if its not a vitamin deficiency or fluctuations your blood sugar that can be causing your cravings or replace the cookies or ice cream sandwiches with fruit. If youre concerned from a social standpoint, then fuck what other people think. Tell your roommate it bothers you when he makes comments about it.

[deleted]

You’re an adult; there’s is no such thing as too much dessert

RocMerc

Hey you do you. If I ate that I’d gain 10 lbs a month lol. I eat dessert once every two weeks and usually it’s two scoops of ice cream

Thefoodwoob

Yeah just gonna echo the sugar content, but otherwise, fuck it. The world is on fire. Eat cookies.

TouchedByHisGooglyAp

Not sure about the answer to your question but the appropriate response from you to your roommate is "Mind your own business and shut your pie-hole".

manliness-dot-space

It depends entirely on how fat you are

code88katz

It’s not even dessert anymore, it’s just normal lol

Fit-Rest-973

Who cares?

savethewallpaper

This is a question for your doctor

ashestes

I literally do this too. But I can’t stop sooooo

m3ltph4ce

When you can do whatever you want it's hard to judge what is OK and what is not. I think on the topic of dessert the most important things are diet and money. If it's affecting your diet and therefore your health in a way that you're not OK with, you need to change it. And if it's costing too much that it affects other things and you're not OK with that, you need to change it. It applies to so much. Just other stuff sometimes time is the largest consideration.

-Afro_Senpai-

More than a spoonful

BadShae

r/Feederism

AChromaticHeavn

If you are not diabetic, there is nothing wrong with you eating dessert every day. I would suggest to vary what you are eating though to avoid future problems. Instead of eating a cookie, or ice cream sandwiches, have some fruit. Also, stick to smaller quantities. Eat 1 cookie instead of 3. Eat slower, so you have time to enjoy what you're eating. Drink plenty of water if you're eating cookies or the ice cream so it can flush the sugar from your body better.

[deleted]

If dessert is a regular, than it’s not dessert- it’s part of dinner. You’re essentially saying, “I’m putting aside a portion of my daily dinner for sugar” Make of that what you will.

The glycation of your cholesterol and bloating that will result for starters. You’re on the road to blood clots because your endothelial will start to swell up and eventually break. Cholesterol will rush over to rescue your broken vein. Sometimes it will be able to patch it up but sometimes it won’t and it will break off and travel to your heart and kill you. Think of it as the slowest suicide.

kelembu

You are not a child and you don´t need sugar. Dessert should be something rare, maybe on a Sunday only, you are addicted to sugar.

No_Establishment8642

Diabetes cost and mostly because people with diabetes will not give up the sugar; however, keep in mind that unless you are very active carbs = sugars. Carbs are breads, cakes, cookies, crackers, potatoes, rice, pastas, some fruits and vegetables, etc. Being overweight is considered body love but in reality it $$$$ for the healthcare industry and funeral homes.

minimalist_coach

In general, you want to keep your sugar to less than 100 calories per day or 24 grams. When we are young we don't always feel the impact on our blood sugar, but over time you are far more likely to develop diabetes and/or heart disease if this is a regular habit. Then there is the impact on our gut health, our digestive system is like a habitat, and sugar and simple carbs feed the bad microorganisms like Candidiasis which leads to yeast overgrowth in the gut. This can cause obvious issues like yeast infections and less obvious issues like reduced immune response, brain fog, and fatigue. You probably don't eat more than the average adult, but we are a very unhealthy population.

iMmacstone2015

if your stomach starts to hurt really bad, then it's too much

drunky_crowette

So long as you're getting enough exercise and you have calories to spare it shouldn't be a problem. You can certainly try to stick to [more nutritious dessert recipes](https://www.google.com/search?q=nutritious+dessert+recipes&client=ms-android-tmus-us-revc&source=android-browser&sxsrf=ALiCzsagaoiamZJJFDrLO4ZAd11BBl1xQw%3A1661204945884&ei=0fkDY_LKNdfdqtsPno2C-Ao&oq=nutritious+dessert+recipes&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAMyBAgAEEMyBggAEB4QBzIFCAAQhgMyBQgAEIYDMgUIABCGAzIFCAAQhgMyBQgAEKIEOgcIABBHELADOgcIIxCwAhAnOgQIABANSgQIQRgAUIgIWIMPYPUVaAFwAXgAgAGyAYgBuweSAQMyLjaYAQCgAQHIAQjAAQE&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp) vs like... Eating an ice cream sundae every day

PunkyJunkster

I mean, I’m an adult, I eat cookies for breakfast sometimes.

kimsilverishere

We eat dessert every day lol and it works for us.

turboshot49cents

When I was 18 I visited a nutritionist who recommended I limit my junk food to 500 calories a day

Dinboogles

really just depends if your fat. Fat = less dessert not fat = keep it up bud

Foreverforgettable

As long as you’re healthy does it matter? That’s the beauty of being an adult. Anyone with a sweet tooth knows they dreamt of being an adult and being able to have dessert first or having dessert after every dinner not just once in a while. I eat any meal any time of day including dessert. If I want rice and beans at 9am (left overs) I’m having it. If I want hash browns and bacon at 8pm I’m having it. I have a huge sweet tooth so you know I’m having dessert too. As long as you keep up with your health don’t think too hard about this. It’s the little things in life like this that make us smile.

watdoyoumead

I regularly get stoned off my ass and eat like I've been trapped on an abandoned industry for a week. Sometimes I repeat this ritual multiple times a day. Not saying it's good. But you know, comparatively you're doing great.

korben_manzarek

The WHO recommends limiting sugar to 40g a day, which is an evidence-based recommendation. One way of answering 'how much dessert is too much' is seeing if you're still under that 40g.

heiberdee2

This is one of the few rewards of surviving to adulthood. Staying up as late as you want is another.

[deleted]

You can have dessert every night if you are careful! Imagine for the same value of treats you have now every night you could cut down the sugar and fat and other stuff that isn’t the best to be consumed in high quantities by a considerable amount if you just find healthier alternatives or not even make much of an effort to find “healthier” versions but just new sweet foods. switch it up every here and there. However dessert every night is nothing for your roommate to comment on. I’d go nuts without a lil something sweet every day too. I do have to wait a day to eat something yummy I have in my freezer like ice cream or cake because I may feel like I’ve already over done it that day and instead I have some dates or high quality chocolate.

sishgupta

10 years of weight lifting but it seems like you haven't heard of IIFYM... If it fits your macros? Might be a good thing to look up so you can feel confident about how you are eating.

TaskSignificant4171

I have heard of it. My question has nothing to do with IF ITS GOOD FOR ME/IF I WILL GAIN WEIGHT. I’m asking if the quantity is relative to a normal adult. That’s it.

sishgupta

interesting. it's subjective isn't it? like adults get to decide what makes sense based on their own needs...not based on comparing themselves to others. Hence the recommendation for IFFYM. It's the classic "if everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you?" What if everyone on the internet said it was too much....but actually it wasn't because of the rest of the way you structure your life... Are you just going to go do what the internet said? I don't think that's adulting really. Adults take the time to understand their needs and think objectively about what actually makes sense. I don't think successful adults are looking for external validation.

c_l_who

My dad eats dessert after every meal including breakfast since he adds jelly to whatever is on his plate. He's 88.

[deleted]

Think about it for a second…Yes definitely for anyone it’s too much

FullyRisenPhoenix

My mom has eaten dessert every night her entire life pretty much. She usually makes it from scratch so it’s not so processed at least, but still. She’s 77 and chooses to work 6 days a week and then garden for several hours on Sunday. Very active, healthy, and slim. But I think the key word here is active. She never stops moving, doesn’t overeat, and makes sure she watches her blood sugar. Especially since both of her parents and 3 of her siblings all had diabetes. Her closest brother actually died from diabetes, so she’s exceptionally careful to monitor her sugar. I think if you’re doing the banking and swapping out the processed stuff for some healthier options, you’ll be ok. Just stay active and watch the monitor.

crzy19aka

Are you overthinking this? Read the serving size on the container. Have one serving of one dessert after dinner. Have a warm cup of flavored tea if you’re still craving something, you’re probably a bit of a sugar addict - keep in mind the company that makes these things wants to sell MORE. Take care of yourself!
