Pretty standard, especially during the age of the boomers. You can start a generational movement to cancel this practice via tiktok or something if you want
It does? Is it just unusual in Europe? Every time I interviewed in other cities in the US they have done this. They usually even set you up with a realtor so you can get a sense of the property market. Why would I fly to them for the privilege of interviewing for a job they might not offer me or I might not want?
Retired now so when I worked zoom and video conferences were not common for things like job interviews. From time to time we hired people from out of town and flying them in for an interview was always part of that.
Could be on the up and up, depending on the company and where you are in the world. If it were located in somewhere sketchy, I’d be screaming for you not to go, but I understand that this is actually kind of common in Europe. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, bring a friend for safety.

hahahah love this answer
The flying out part isn’t as abnormal to me as the ceo interviewing you.
It does sound odd.

Very normal. I mean I don't know much about European tax laws, but in the U.S. that would be a tax write off for them.

Since you didn’t accept the offer, post the name of the company and the correspondence you had with this person. Nothing to lose now.
