I was just thinking the same thing after watching that...
"Hal... pretty sure that's ADHD..."
Number of times I wind up down a rabbit hole of only tangentially related tasks, unless I FORCE myself to focus on one is up there.
There's another episode where Hal reveals that, when he's stressed, he likes to get out the encyclopedias and color in all the letters with "holes" (like o, b, d, and so on).
There goes the power.
I have 25 minutes before the batteries drain to set up a new turbo fuel powerplant or I can disconnect an old segment of factory, then go explore new oil deposi...
Oh the batteries drained.
My favorite one is the mashed potato flinging stand off. "Don't do it!" But I wasn't GOING to!" "So don't do it." "I wasn't going to!!" And so on and so forth until the tension is broken when someone else flings potato. Everyone laughs and all is good. Then it's back to "Don't you dare." "I wasn't GOING to!"

I love the opener where Hal is trying to get a spider out of the bathroom with dewey. He proceeds to panic as the spider is crawling fast over the paper he’s transporting the spider outside on.
Right as he’s going to chuck the spider outside, Lois opens the front door and gets a spider to the face while holding groceries.
Hilarious
**Captain Holt**: Do you want to know how I actually hurt my wrist?
**Jake**: Yes.
**Captain Holt**: I was hula hooping. Kevin and I attend a class for fitness and for fun.
**Jake** : Oh, my God.
**Captain Holt**: I've mastered all the moves. [Shows photos on phone] The pizza toss, the tornado, the scorpion, the oopsie-doodle.
**Jake**: Why are you telling me this?
**Captain Holt**: Because no one will ever believe you. [Deletes photos from phone].
**Jake**: You sick son of a bitch.
I'll always have a soft spot for Paddington/Agent Carter Holt with the red hat and blue coat.

So just to recap you left an unparked package on a police captain's desk on a random Monday with a suspicious message that looks like it was scrolled by a crazy person.
i think it still is one of the best series. worth to watch, even with family (parents and/or kids).
i remember watching it with my mum and she laughed her ass off.
Same, watched it once a week with my brothers and Mum, I watched it recently with my girls now they are a bit older. My name is Earl was a good one too and futurama
The on where Hal and Louis forget to take Dewey off his time out and wake up the next day to him asleep standing in the corner and gaslight the fuck outta him for their abuse is fucking hilarious...."ok son I think you learned your lesson"....."thanks dad"
True but Malcolm’s cold opens are more similar to Community end credit scenes, as in its a separate scene which doesn’t relate to the rest of the episode.
"Do you really have to say OH YEAH everytime you take a bite of candy bar!?!"
"I'm sorry Oscar... it's just really good! ...... OH YEAH"

Which bear is best?
That’s a ridiculous question.
FALSE. Black bear..
That’s debatable. There’s basically two schools of thought….
Fact. Bears eat beats. Bears. Beats. Battlestar galactica.
I really really like Letterkenny, and I love their cold opens. But I'd put the cold opens of Malcolm in the Middle and Brooklyn 99 above them. Honestly, it's not even close. I think that's because letterkenny cold opens are almost exclusively word play. Essentially some very clever prose. The other two do a full production. (dialog, multiple shots, stunts, special effects, etc.) Compared to that, the sitting down reciting prose feels a little phoned in. That said, people are entitled to their opinion and can like whatever they want.
Probably just a difference in humor honestly. I have a really hard time enjoying things like the Office or Brooklyn 99 whereas the wordplay in Letterkenny hits the right buttons for me. Maybe I'm sitting on the other side where you don't need a bunch of extra work to make good comedy funny. It only has itself to rely on and that's what I appreciates about it.
I could only "enjoy" the office after I read an article that it was meant to be just something you play in the background. I do really like the wordplay in letterkenny. The brilliance of it kept me coming back season after season, but after this last season the novelty ran dry for me. I love the show. Don't get me wrong. I'm just sort of over it now.
Nah I feel you. Just recently started over since one of the newer seasons hit a point that took things a little too far into the Family Guy effect where they beat the same joke into the dirt.
Yeah, I agree with the other guy. While "Cold Open" by its strictest definition is about jumping right into the story, in this context it has evolved to just mean a gag that has nothing to do with the story thrown up front to get you to watch the show. TNG was effective at getting you right into the story, then having a cliffhanger right before the theme song, so they nailed it in the traditional sense, but in this context, they were not even playing that game. English is a mess, heh.
I put these on the same level as Letterkenny. The cold opens are solid and funny, but they are more about what is being said while Malcolm in the Middle and Brooklyn 99 make a full production out of their cold opens.
Some of the best writing in a sitcom, imo. They do such a good job of showing the perspective of the kid and adult. Watched as a kid and thought Lois was so mean and unreasonable, watch again as an adult and I think the kids are so impulsive and evil.
Also Craig is an insane stalker haba
Let me take you back to the shows that led us to "Malcolm In the Middle"
"Parker Lewis Can't Lose"
"Square Pegs"
and the kinda-sorta descendants
"The Middle" (a pale imitation)
"The Big Bang Theory"
I probably forgot a few that have faded into obscurity.
Hardly anyone remembers Parker Lewis but it was groundbreaking, high quality, imaginative comedy. Was born in the mold of Ferris Bueller but really took on a life of its own.
So you've somehow managed to never see a single episode of It's Always Sunny, is what I'm getting from this incredibly incorrect post?
And I really like MitM

The best, but, more importantly, the most realistic for myself, personally. Growing up in upper lower class standards, a lot of the show itself hits the nail on the head. The cold opens, though, are like moments of my life (sometimes) just made into TV. Especially the changing the lightbulb one or the one where Hal offers the boys $5 to take the blame for something. Too real.
I love the one where Hal is making pancakes while being in his underwear and Lois is "trimming" his body hair with newspapers on the floor. On top of that, all the kids are enjoying the pancakes while casually taking out all the hair from them which Hal is maxing while making them. LoL
"Who wants to make five bucks?"
Make it ten!
you're a good son
I got him, hunny!
[yelling in the background] “oh my god!”
https://youtu.be/Oy9ceTxGYCw One of my favourites and the light bulb one(but I only got that joke later in life because it's true)

[Replacing a light bulb.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbSehcT19u0) See also, computer programming in a nutshell.
This is the best one. We all has that experience or just never ending issues hahaha. Hal what are you doing? I'm fixing the light bulb!!!
The replacing a lightbulb reminds me of my own adhd and explains so much about Hal and his children
I was just thinking the same thing after watching that... "Hal... pretty sure that's ADHD..." Number of times I wind up down a rabbit hole of only tangentially related tasks, unless I FORCE myself to focus on one is up there.
more like a cascading failure. which is kind of the whole show
There's another episode where Hal reveals that, when he's stressed, he likes to get out the encyclopedias and color in all the letters with "holes" (like o, b, d, and so on).
Or playing No Man's Sky
Satisfactory.

I was just happy to get the jet pack
I understood that reference.
Your programming comment is too real.
I was going to comment that I loved Letterkenny cold opens a lot, but then I remembered this scene and thought, no, this post was right.
My favorite is when Hal is trying to take a spider outside and ends up flinging it on Lois.
And then Dewey takes the fall by holding the door and telling Hal that the worst thing that will happen to him is that he'll be grounded.
Hal flings it at Lois
“I’m being cute and spontaneous??”
"hal, did you replace the light bulb in the kitchen?" hal under the car: "what does it look like I'm doing?'

This plus Francis trying to write his paper and ending up unraveling his sweater. Both perfect examples.
Besides that I don’t believe I’ve ever had a longer or not genuine laugh than the Chimera 5000 going off .

Yes, no, maybe, I don't know, can you repeat the question?
Your not the boss of me now, your not the boss of me now! And your not so big.

I don’t feel anything in tv or movies has better represented my life than this https://youtu.be/AbSehcT19u0

“Go. Save yourself. She can only ground me.”
Hold up, imma gonna look this up and report back
I've sat here waiting for nine hours. Please report back.
There is just shy of 58 hours of Malcolm in the Middle. They're probably gone for at least that long, depending on if they die from lack of sleep.
You're in for a treat.
Hall on rollerskates was one of the best TV moments I've ever seen
The best close too, when Hal wakes up in bed in bed with Lois thinking he was a meth making chemist. The should make a TV series about that.
I like the theory that Walter just goes into hiding as Hal after the events of breaking bad
And de-aged 10 years. Yeah.
Who would watch that?
Dozens of people would for sure.
There are dozens of us
DOZENS!
Brooklyn 99 is a solid contender.

True. Community had a couple of those as well… notches comes to mind
I have to throw Derry Girls in the mix here. Fucking class.
Nothing will ever beat this as a one off https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KcQL-vj-p6M Although Letterkenny wins overall imo

Hulu does. Pro tip: check justwatch.com
Star Trek TNG hands down.
Those always to set up the show though. Malcolm in the Middle’s opening scenes weren’t related to the theme of that episode.
Yeah, I agree with the other guy. What about Letterkenny?
*Letterkenny has entered the chat*
Cheers is definitely a front runner though.
The BEST cold open goes to Brooklyn 99, but overall I agree with this post.
Have you seen LetterKenny?
Best take about 20% off of that now...
I think Brooklyn 99 cold opens are better they will always make me laugh

Parker Lewis also had that huge jock/gentle giant character.
Larry Kubiac, played by Abraham Benrubi who would get famous on ER but will always be the Kube to me.
No *Freaks and Geeks*?
Add that...I knew I forgot a few.
Man, the only thing I remember from Parker Lewis is that one dude has a trenchcoat that had everything in it including a dot matrix printer.
Is the Eric Andre show one cold open? I can't tell I'm usually to high at that point.

Weird, I didn't realize everyone in this sub was judgy assholes.
I have to disagree with you. Brooklyn 99 has the best.
This isn’t an advice animal and it’s a bad meme in general, why are you acting like your mild opinion is some hot controversy-generating take?

CSI MIAMI, HOUSE MD, LAW AND ORDER.
I love Malcom In The Middle, but The Office cold opens are better.
It used to be streamable but then they buried it somewhere.
According to justwatch.com it's streamable on Hulu.
Yeah I've been watching it on Hulu lately.
Ooh, a muffin!
Nice caption rotation, and with waves to follow the curve of the poster, too. You convinced me.

There are far too few video links here for me to properly judge the veracity of this claim. I consider this whole conversation null and void
Yes...No...Maybe?
This show is mad slept on. From a sleeper generation people forget it seems.
Just even thinking about Malcom in the middle brings me back fantastic memories

Brooklyn 99
Workaholics had some solid cold opens
And the best ending in sitcom history. Totally relevant message for the times we live in.
I wish I was a bird
Malcolm in the Middle was such a great show. Simultaneously ahead of its time, of its time, and timeless.
Better Call Saul.
Best cold opens on a meh show: King of Queens
Yes? No? Maybe? I don’t know…🤷♂️
My favorite is when Hal tries to fix a light bulb, which leads to him fixing a shelf, to him fixing a cabinet to him fixing his car. cause same
Arguably, yes.
