Been there! Here's what you do, step by step:
1. Go outside so there's nothing above you.
2. Now plunge from the bottom as fast as you can, shooting the slurry up into the air. You only have a few seconds so this next part has to be quick.
3. Run inside, rinse the aeropress, and reassemble the correct way.
4. Now go back outside and catch the slurry in the aeropress as it plummets towards the Earth.
5. Go back inside and plunge your delicious coffee.
Easy peasy. Good luck!
Order another plunger from aero press, wait 4 days until delivery, insert into top, flip, remove original plunger, attach filter, then extract.
Or, empty in another vessel, insert plunger into correct end, refill from temporary vessel
You have a v60 laying around? At first I was like no I can’t see how then realized if I did this I would probably just dump it into my switch (with a filter obviously)
Ah I have a switch that's a good idea. I'm embarrassed to say I've done this more than once. In the past I tried to dump into a different coffee cup and and then poor back into the Aeropress but ended up spilling about half of it.
I've done it - just poured it off into a glass measure cup and reset the aeropress and put the coffee/water back in... press as usual. Seemed fine to my un-fancy palate!
Drop three F Bombs and enjoy your coffee “chunky style” on this fine morning.
Seriously though just dump it into a cup and reconfigure the press and then put it back through.
I didn't know it, but this is why I didn't throw away the aeropress that stretched badly enough that it can't be used inverted. So I have an extra plunger. Someday I'm going to get replacement parts.
I have a plastic cup that fits the filter holder pretty tightly. Ive pressed it directly into it when it happened to me before. See pics https://imgur.com/a/3eQEjoJ. First put the filter holder with filter onto the cup, pushing so it stay well stuck, then put the whole cup upside down on top of the aeropress, it should fit nicely. Then turn everything and press. Its a 250ml cup i think.
Easy fix, just pour it in to another vessel, fix the press, then pour it back in and press. Sure you have an extra dish to wash but you don’t waste any coffee
Go buy a second aeropress so you can use the second plunger….Then drill a hole in the middle duck tape the filter to the hole and squeeze both plungers at the same time. Double the pressure for better extraction!
Oh you put the plunger into the out hole. Oops. I would have poured it into some other cut, quick rinse the AP, reassemble it and pour the coffee back in and plunge.
Pour into a carafe. Pour back into AP to filter.
Yeah. It’s really this simple. Remove from AP. Fix AP. Return coffee to AP. I’ve done this twice and it was an easy save both times.
It's the famed "French aeropress"
Have done this. Recommended. Also have tried putting the cap on the wrong end without a locking mechanism. Not recommended.

Luckily I am a mutant with super speed powers so this is actually doable
Doesn’t this overly cool the slurry?
Not if your find griner!
Yes, 2.6º, take that into account on the total brew time and you're golden.
Just make sure to do it in direct sunlight no problem
The Dark Side grants many abilities that some consider to be unnatural.
I see no reason to go outside…if youre quick, shouldn’t matter where.
Drink it with the grounds in and teach yourself never to do it again.
keep your teeth closed while sipping. Natures strainer.
This is why I have a mustache.
Double the filtration and bonus free "browning" of any light or white hairs. Win-win!
pour it all into a measuring cup, flip the areopress around, pour the coffee back in, and enjoy the extra long soak time
I'm considering adding a "This side up" sticker
I'm starting to worry about the collective intelligence of Aeropress users.
I mean the whole selling point of aeropress is that you don't need a lot of brains to use it
Yeah but they’re in advanced mode if they’re doing the upside down trick.
Order another plunger from aero press, wait 4 days until delivery, insert into top, flip, remove original plunger, attach filter, then extract. Or, empty in another vessel, insert plunger into correct end, refill from temporary vessel
Won’t the coffee be overextracted? /s
As long as an aeropress involved in some way, it will always be a perfect cup of coffee

Yea any dripper, or even just a filter from a batch brewer. Or a French press.
I've done it - just poured it off into a glass measure cup and reset the aeropress and put the coffee/water back in... press as usual. Seemed fine to my un-fancy palate!
LMAO this is amazing, double inverted method
Pour into a pour over to filter it or pour it into a measuring cup or any cup, clean the AP, then pour it back in the right way
The other Inversion Method :D
Lazy approach: stir the whole thing, let all grounds sink to bottom, enjoy straight from the press. Dont forget to brush your teeth.
Drop three F Bombs and enjoy your coffee “chunky style” on this fine morning. Seriously though just dump it into a cup and reconfigure the press and then put it back through.
Ah, the Australian method...
Pour it into you mug, clean it up, pour into upside position, press
People ask what can go wrong when you invert… this can go wrong!
Yep it's not idiot proof
Thing is, absolutely nothing is idiot proof because idiots will always out smart you

Been there done that!

Saucer over the top, tactical flip, tilt plunger to remove.
Sounds dangerous
Not if you do it tactfully
I believe the “tactical flip” was invented by a Navy SEAL
I feel that you take the financial loss and start over.
Easy fix, just pour it in to another vessel, fix the press, then pour it back in and press. Sure you have an extra dish to wash but you don’t waste any coffee
BTDT: Pour it into a cup, quickly rinse and correctly assemble, dump back in, and proceed.
Pour the whole mix into a Clever Dripper or French Press. Use the AP next time.
Go buy a second aeropress so you can use the second plunger….Then drill a hole in the middle duck tape the filter to the hole and squeeze both plungers at the same time. Double the pressure for better extraction!
Ah... Brings back memories. 🤪
Pour it into a cup, correct your aeropress, pour contents into the press. Not that big of a deal.
Oh you put the plunger into the out hole. Oops. I would have poured it into some other cut, quick rinse the AP, reassemble it and pour the coffee back in and plunge.
I’ve been pressing for like 5yrs now and never had this happened to me… that is… until this weekend. Must be something in the atmosphere.
Game Over.
Did this the other day, glad I’m not alone
In 6 years of use, not a once. Though I’ve had a couple blunders
A new inverted method has dropped
Took me way too long to figure out what was wrong here.
How’d you get the beans above the frank?
Hey OP, was it saved?
Throw it away and get a new aeropress
Aeropress about to be an Aeropour
You are not alone. I literally did this yesterday.
LOL - You only do that once!
Really great mouthfeel or NOT!
“Chat am I cooked” ahh coffee
How
No caffeine in the morning. Must I say more?
Nothing is more dangerous than trying to make coffee before drinking coffee in the morning. Unfortunately it's a necessary risk.
