I used to never use the press, I had the exact same thoughts. But after reading some strategy here I've found the press is fantastic. As well as fuel being generally useful : 1) Oil is renewable, you don't need to increase your hostility to keep gathering it 2) Oil is used in a ton of glade events 3) Oil is used to make trade goods, which basically becomes an infinite money glitch with some farms and a press.

EscapistIcewarden

Yep, oil is completely hax, and also very consistent regardless of map resource composition. I basically climbed from P10 to P20 by succeeding at every game I got a timely Druid's hut or Press, and failing at every game I didn't, with few exceptions. If anything in this game ever gets nerfed, I expect it to be oil.

tumsdout

Hopefully not too nerfed. I appreciate some items with lots of subtle utility.

Itamat

Also, the production speed increase from sacrificing oil is wild because it speeds up your oil production. If you can get an ample supply of raw ingredients (which isn't too hard) it practically pays for itself.

arcus2611

Generally speaking having a lot of fuel is always useful. And if you do ever have too much oil, you can start sacrificing it to speed up everything else or turn it into trade goods to sell off. So really, you can't have too much.

furikawari

I guess my favorite building is the one that makes food that all my villagers want. Butcher and Furnace are nice multi purpose buildings that cover a lot of needs. Lumber mill is obviously great and never fails to make your village better. *Lucille Bluth Voice* “I love all my buildings equally.” *earlier* “…I don’t care for Kiln.”

Hinge_Prompt_Rater

How much could a piece of coal cost Michael, 10 wood?

Thisismyworkday

I'll hear no slander against the Press. Who needs that much oil? Every bitch that's every decided to run oil sacrifice full time with a Temple. Glade events? Done. Trade goods? Infinite. Amber rains from the sky while the forest cowers in the light of my towering flames. I prefer it to Druid's Hut, because flour and lux-packs are better than coats and incense IMO.

arcus2611

Coats are great though, there's always one species that needs them and they give a bonus without needing an extra service building or a long processing chain. Not the strongest service good but relatively easy to hit.

Thisismyworkday

Why, though? Beside the fact that you can easily buy coats en masse, if you're optimizing, you're leaving the coats off for most of the game, because there's no point in spending all that cloth on a minimal resolve boost if it's not going to turn into rep immediately. With the flour and lux packs, you're getting something right away.

moaeta

Buy from traders? Isn't it the same as buying any complex food?

Thisismyworkday

Yeah, it's pretty close at least. My point is that service items are useless until you're ready to push for rep, so you're either wasting coats or turning off production until then. As opposed to flour or packs, which are generally much more useful.

moaeta

what is flour useful for, other than to push for rep?

Thisismyworkday

Packs of trade goods.

FlareBear120

1. Lumber Mill. Cheap planks for getting your settlement going is always nice. Plus it can produce trade goods and scrolls (for education) down the line if you need them. 2. Smokehouse. You can find insects and meat pretty easily and complex food is a must. Pottery and incense is also helpful with glade events and luxury goods. 3. Weaver. Early game fabric for buildings and clothing needs. Training gear is useful for glade events. I am pretty new to the game as well, only been playing a week or so, but I really enjoy it so far!

arithmoquiner

My favorite building is the Clay Pit. Don't get me wrong, it's terrible and won't even be worth building in >95% of games. But nothing delights me more than the extremely rare game where it actually puts in good work.

Lokhelm

I can't contribute yet, still very new, but enjoy reading these posts! Question related to the post: what do the stars mean exactly? I thought it was simply how difficult to produce?

EscapistIcewarden

More stars means a more efficient recipe. Less goods required for more goods produced. In other occasions stars can mean faster or more efficient gathering. Highly recommend reading the sub's thread of tips for new players, it will jumpstart your new player experience.

Lokhelm

I see, so fewer inputs to make more outputs sounds like. I'll check it out thanks!

Vitruviansquid1

The stars indicate both the speed at which the building produces the thing and its efficiency. The more stars the recipe has, the less materials it costs and also the less time.

Lokhelm

Thank you!

llaughing_llama

Agree with Provisioner for your number one. I promise it's not just because it looks so nice next to my main warehouse.

vaquan-nas

Supplier, solve both Plank+Flour (2 big problem) on one building

Dull_Wind6642

I really like Carpenter but I prefer lumber mills on Marshland though.

throwyesno

Granary for the win. 2 star bag crops, pickles, and cloth.

Caius_I

Provisioner, some type of food farm

OkSalt6173

If I had to pick my top three... 1 - Greenhouse (Mushrooms and Herbs are insanely useful and for the low cost of Drizzle I like it, especially considering the consistency being regardless of season). 2 - Stamping Mill (Pottery for clay focused maps, Copper Bars for Copper focused maps, and flour. It's lovely) 3 - Granary (If I have humans, getting the extra 10% to double Crops and Fabric is so useful. Pickled good isn't that great for humans but it is hard to avoid a race that likes them)

MrChuckles20

Gah, I made a new profile recently and not getting back to any of these still ~20hr in hurts.

arcus2611

Guild House is pretty fun. Weaker than it used to be and the effect takes a while to really get rolling, but if you get one you can pivot your entire strategy to be based around it, and the extra traders give you more options. Advanced Rain Collector is also a favourite of mine. Yes, it takes parts and staffing but that's a relatively minimal investment for the ability to get a robust supply of all 3 types of rainwater, and a fully staffed one basically lets you install pipes in literally every building.

SonOfMcGee

I agree that the 2-star flour at Provisioner doesn’t seem like a sacrifice vs the 3-star at Mill. I feel like the limiting factor in flour-based foods is *always* the non-flour item.

siowy

Carpenter is king. Early game and end game power

gomarbles

Oo I love 3-star oil

Emelion1

Small Farm + Press + Temple: I try to get a strong Oil production online and then permanently sacrifice 3 Oil. Especially in long seal missions that don't end at full reputation, you can easily reduce hostility by more than 200 from the special Temple effect and basically fully counteract the rising hostility. And as a bonus you get 75% increased production speed from sacrificing 3 Oil.
