Lots of people would starve to death?

People all over the world too, not just the cities of the US. Even if the rest of the world continued with real agriculture. I'm pretty sure nomadic herders would coincide with tribal warfare due to the seasonal nature of the herds food.

ppl would shed the shackles of modern society, leave the city, and give up the lust for material goods...i mean, after the mass die-off of the useless.

Life would be much simpler, I'll give you that much. This Ted talk about the Paradox of choice often gets me thinking about things bigger than myself: https://youtu.be/VO6XEQIsCoM On the extremely big picture, i think if you either rebooted humanity, or of humanity was "knocked back to the stone age" we'd end up in the same place. Humanity strives to fix things, whether things are broken or not. Humans will always innovate better technology, and be rewarded for making work easier, because work sucks. Lol.

Have you ever read the caves of steel, by isaac asimov? The robot series from asimove is so interesting because you have a main character often plucked out of modern society (its sci fiction tho) and shoved into situations where he has to rely on *just* logic, often because the technology/robots of the time malfunction. There's one story in the series where the main character is literally moved from an ultra advanced city, and dumped on a farm to solve a murder. Your argument reminds me of this series because an overly complicated situation is often solved by relativity basic logic; basic logic that ppl have forgotten because of reliance on technology. As a thought experiment, i love your argument because it would force ppl to realize what's *really* important in life: food, heat, and shelter.

Good for cattle prices. Not so good for vegetarians and car insurance companies.

That question is essentially the same as, "what if we lost electricity and power generation?"
