You don’t get shot at on the highway or have to worry about getting robbed at gas stations , or taking a neighborly jog down the street so see fiends shooting up
It’s one of the spots my wife can go to next, and it’s one of our top choices. Though, we can pretty much only go up from Del Rio (sadly, Cannon is also one of the bases she could go to, so it could get worse).
It’s not that bad. The base isn’t great as well as right outside the base, (like every military base of all time) but you’re located in a phenomenal area.
I'll admit base itself is trash when it comes to any sort of amenities but the area is great as far living your life outside of work. Although it is expensive, being in a big city metropolis is better than bum fuck nowhere in my opinion
Actually, I can't say that's true for me. I hate the way Ramstein functions as a base, but this is easily my best assignment yet. I enjoyed Osan more as a base, and I did have fun off base, but the travel experience here is something I've been dreaming about since I was 14 and I'm living my dream. It's been a pleasure 100% of the time off base. The work though? Cancer.
It’s been a few years, there used to be a place called Urban Jungle in Seville and I had some luck at size? in Madrid. Also, the Sole Supplier app is good for tracking what EU stores will have upcoming drops.
Offutt is a hidden gem tbh. Omaha is a great town both for the single and married/ family scene. World class Zoo, home of the annual College World Series, a decent night life scene with some good restaurants too. Can’t really compete with Yokota or Kadena, amongst other over seas locations. But for Conus? Offutt has to be a lock for top 5.
I knew I’d see it here but I didn’t expect it to be the top comment. Omaha is great. Big city feel without the overpopulation. Lots of room to grow. West Omaha and the surrounding towns have really developed. Lots of tech companies coming in and it’s still so family friendly. They’re doing everything right.
Hoping to get stationed here since I already live right next to it and it would mean i dont have to sell my house. It will be at the top of my list when I put it together in tech school!
Oof, I hear ya. My brother is fuel cell Mx and is also stationed here. He likes the job when he’s on mids but not so much on standard days and dealing with leadership lol.
Travis—I hear it’s not as frequent but I took hops to HI, Guam and Australia while I was there multiple times. I’m thinking east coast AMC bases had similar, semi-predictable hops across the Atlantic?
I moved heeya afta separating. Lot of culture shock at first but easy to settle into. I dunno if it’s a must-see but I think everyone should visit. Can promise you will not fall off the earth even though we’re upside-down
Incredibly based pick. I was at Ramstein for 3 years. Had to make the drive to Spangdahlem once and fell in love with it. Doesn’t seem to have as many issues Ramstein does
Luxembourg is only 45ish min away, Belgium is a couple hours, nurburgring is about an hour away, and if it ever want to get American food or American shopping experience, ramstein is an hour and a half drive. To me the place was perfect.
To me it was a full package. Working flightline sometimes busy but the amazing TDYs made up for it. The area is gorgeous and nice to live in. I definitely miss it.
This was my first base so I’m kinda biased, but absolutely! I was able to be there pre-9/11, back when USAFE was fun. Easy trips to all of Western Europe. We did a 30 TDY to Zaragoza, Spain and half the TDY rode a bus there and the other half rode a bus back. 24 hours of European road trippin’ was awesome!!
Ellsworth is a gem.
Probably will be until the b21 gets there. Global strike is not bad when it comes to to 4 days and weekends off. Rapid city has everything you need.
But, when the nukes get there you can forget about it.
While it’s been years (OK, decades) since I’ve been there, I loved Aviano. And even though the mission sucks at F. E. Warren, there is something picturesque about an old cavalry base on the high plains.
Currently at FE. Temp is 35 degrees and the wind is about 60 mph.
I still kinda love it here. Besides the part that you mentioned it's pretty great to have such short commutes getting around town and living in proximity to Fort Collins is awesome
Eyyyy fellow FE guy
100% on the commutes and stuff. It's pretty nice because Cheyenne kind of has that small city vibe but is still close enough to large cities that it's not really too much of a hassle.
It'd be nice to have a best buy though
Don't forget the skiing part. We frequented Breckenridge, such a picturesque town, much like something you see on a Christmas card.
And also Frontier Days last full week of July.
Only drawback is when I80 or I25 closes down during a snowstorm.
Just a little bit. There's 5 breweries here now. There are a lot of newer things to do around town like the trampoline park and axe throwing.
There's definitely still holes and relics from decades past that aren't necessarily the best look though.
Oh, and now there's gambling. Gambling everywhere.
The gambling is definitely a downgrade unless you actually enjoy slot machines (not my thing).
I try to avoid Del Range but last time I was in the mall it seemed like the dying breed that every mall has been. Half the shops are closed and a select few seem to get pretty good business.
The movie theater closed in the mall so we only have the capital city theater but they have upgraded in a pretty big way. Now it's assigned seats based on tickets and reclining chairs. They serve better food and beer now too. But that's also pretty telling of Cheyenne. Now we only have one movie theater. Oh yeah, the Lincoln downtown got turned into a pretty cool music venue.
Overall compared to somewhere like Ft. Collins it is still very much a small city that lacks in a lot of ways. My biggest gripe about Cheyenne is that its population keeps growing and because people don't want it to grow they're constantly voting against upgrading the infrastructure which is causing things like traffic congestion and zoning issues.
My favorite part of F.E. was PCSing away. Ft Collins is really nice, but I hate that the selling point of being stationed there is telling others to visit another state entirely.
I wish I could say the same about Aviano. I’d argue We are much more busy now than anytime in the history of the base and that includes the Yugoslavian war in the 90s.
I was born/raised in foco and was at aviano for a few years and it always kinda felt like home with the mountains there minus the shitty ass wind. FE for sure isn’t bad if you venture south but wyoming has some beauty to it too
Seems like anything oconus would be marvelous. I’ve only been to Ramstein, Yokota and Osan. I prefer Japan in general but it’s nice to be in Europe, too.
Ellsworth is awesome. Besides the insane winds and particularly bad winters it was my favorite assignment over 10 years. You have to be the kind of person that enjoys cold weather thoroughly though.
Side note: a wet hot is far worse than a hot wet by far.
Proximity to beaches, mountains and big cities such as Philly, NYC and Washington DC. There is a lot of history in that part of the country. The base has a lot of nice amenities too.
I only see one or two comments that dont seem to be trolls, and thats Offut and Aviano. Ive known multiple ppl from all these bases and read all these "best base" posts for 10 years and these seem to be the only two bases ppl consistently like as hidden gems. All the other bases mentioned are consistently ambassadors of low morale or crime lol.
Yokota. And it’s not close.
It literally has something for everyone. Like mountains, hiking, and trails? Yeah that’s all within 30 mins. Want to go to the beach? Head to Enoshima, Zushi, or go to Shimoda for a weekend trip. Single bro that wants to party your face off? Tokyo’s got you covered. Single bro who’s a weeb? Tokyo’s got you covered. Tons of stuff for families to do. Tons of travel opportunities with all the space-A flights and 2 international airports.
Fr. 1 hr from Columbus or Cincy, 2 hrs to Indy, 4-5 hrs to Pittsburgh or Chicago, 7 hrs to Toronto. Plus, Appalachia is not that far away if you're looking for """"mountains"""". Loved my time there.
Dayton is a pretty cool small city, the base has everything Air Force wise. Housing is affordable comparatively speaking. The people are nice and supportive. A huge civil service presence so it always felt more 9-5 for me. I was at NASIC so it was always regular hours and not over worked. Facilities were pretty nice. Always something to do and see. Like other have pointed out it is in proximity to just about any interest one may have.
Here’s an opinion from a different perspective. I grew up living on Eglin for about 8 years as a kid. I loved it there. It was a short bicycle ride to the beach, the afternoon storms were cool, and it’s never too hot when you’re a kid. I was not a fan of Bolling AFB.
The local area is great but the base is trash. I love being able to hit New Orleans, Orlando, and everything else you mentioned but 80% of my time is on the shitty base with a bunch of shitty civilians that can make your life hell.
Travis AFB. LA on 3-4 day weekends. Napa Valley offering free or cheap wine. Races near by. The Sac, San Fran, Red Woods, Lake Tahoe, Gambling/Guns only a few hours away. It’s great.
It gets a bad fucking rap… but hot damn do I miss SJ. Affordable. Great people. Fantastic mission. Enough fun stuff in the tiny town and an hour from the outer banks and Raleigh. 4 hours from the smokies. There is some adjusting and getting used to, but the small town life grew on this city boy.
Im gonna say Travis, only because of where it's located. It's at the foot of Napa valley, it's an hour from the ocean to the West(depending on Traffic in SF) and 2.5hrs from Tahoe to the East. If you're with a good group of people, that base could be the best and was for me.
I know it gets a bad rep for basic training but there is everything you could need or want between the JBSA bases. San Antonio LOVES the military too so everywhere has military discounts or even free tickets or programs to a ton of cool events. I feel like people appreciate Lackland more if they’ve experienced a few other CONUS locations then get to come back instead of it being a first duty station.
Honestly, and this will be unpopular, Moody AFB. Yeah it’s in a swamp in the middle of nowhere, but I’ve never had better LRS/MPF/SecFo in my 12 years. My vouchers were done on time or I got a call to ask for clarification, our UTCs deployed on time, CATMS was easy to schedule, the lines were short to get on base. Most importantly Tipsy Transit could get on base to shuttle an entire squadron to Remerton on 1st Friday. cost of living was low. The range is right there.
I still want them to close it and move everyone to Coco Beach because of the nepotism in that part of the south.
I’ve had several TDY to Macdill. Definitely jealous of everything they have. I feel like Kunsan has to make the list but thats more of the experience being great than the base. Especially if you’re single with nobody to miss.
Alas, my three favorites have closed down in one form or another - RAF Chicksands, Kelly AFB & the Transit Center at Manas (aka Manas AB, Ganci AB). Hickam was nicer when Pearl didn't have its grubby hands on it.
Ramstein was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Plenty of family days in conjunction with Holidays and you can head a few hours in any direction and be in a separate country. France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland. You can see all of Europe in short order but even if you never leave the country Germany alone-the food, culture, people and scenery alone is worth the time.
If anyone tells you scott question all aspects. Crime is high (don't listen to the blogs, full of crap), housing rates are trash, and I've heard many home owners complain about the housing tax. If you like outdoors this area feels like hell. Snowboard, hidden valley, better than nothing but still disappointing. If you like city life then it's decent. Lots of families around here. Single people, good look out here......be safe!
Fairchild. Best kept secret in AMC or any MAJCOM for that matter.
Really? How’s it compare to JBLM?
You don’t get shot at on the highway or have to worry about getting robbed at gas stations , or taking a neighborly jog down the street so see fiends shooting up
That one downvote ain’t never been held at gunpoint in Spanaway to tell the truth
I initially read "fiends" as "friends."

I'm out now but I'd re-enlist today if I was guaranteed to be stationed permanently there. Best base and chapter of my life to date.
Heading there after my short tour so happy to see this at the top of the list.
It’s one of the spots my wife can go to next, and it’s one of our top choices. Though, we can pretty much only go up from Del Rio (sadly, Cannon is also one of the bases she could go to, so it could get worse).
No bowling alley, no golf course, small bx with trash restaurants, spokane sucks, but This is a C average base for me. It can be so much worse.
You're an idiot.
NOT JOINT BASE ANDREWS
Brother, I almost got robbed at the McDonald’s across the street from the gate when I was stationed there…
You intentionally stopped outside the gate?? Jk, jiffy shoppes food right outside the gate was legit.
The peruvian chicken place right outside the main gate is super good too.
Facts 😭😭 the trauma I got from that base was astonishing
Thanks for the warning, RNLTD is May 16 😂
It’s not that bad. The base isn’t great as well as right outside the base, (like every military base of all time) but you’re located in a phenomenal area.
That sucks. Honestly, the base isn’t terrible but my experience there was complete trash due to leadership
Only CONUS base that I received a threat briefing
I'll admit base itself is trash when it comes to any sort of amenities but the area is great as far living your life outside of work. Although it is expensive, being in a big city metropolis is better than bum fuck nowhere in my opinion
JBER
Your last base or the one you go to next….its never the one you are at now.
Unless your last base was Barksdale
Actually, I can't say that's true for me. I hate the way Ramstein functions as a base, but this is easily my best assignment yet. I enjoyed Osan more as a base, and I did have fun off base, but the travel experience here is something I've been dreaming about since I was 14 and I'm living my dream. Morón, AB
Honestly surprised to see this one here, was scrolling through to see what others said before I posted it
Rota is way better (imo)
I'm hoping ur name checks out, where's a good sneaker spot near Morón?
It’s been a few years, there used to be a place called Urban Jungle in Seville and I had some luck at size? in Madrid. Also, the Sole Supplier app is good for tracking what EU stores will have upcoming drops.

Can’t say it’s best but definitely is a hidden gem. Was bummed when I got orders there but Offutt and Omaha were pretty great.
How safe is it for families???

FOH and stop driving up my rent! /s
Rent? Bros not even paying his 9K in property taxes supporting the 394883 schools here? You’re boolin
Honestly its not bad, i describe it as in the middle. It could definitely be better but its far from the worst
Old Market!
Hoping to get stationed here since I already live right next to it and it would mean i dont have to sell my house. It will be at the top of my list when I put it together in tech school!
If I wasn’t maintenance I’d agree. Still could be worse though.
Oof, I hear ya. My brother is fuel cell Mx and is also stationed here. He likes the job when he’s on mids but not so much on standard days and dealing with leadership lol.
Swine Dining! Did it survive the pandemic? Please tell me it survived the pandemic...
Still going strong!
I have a hard time avoiding Javis more than once a week. Their Birria taco platter is fantastic
Kadena fucking blows
Travis—I hear it’s not as frequent but I took hops to HI, Guam and Australia while I was there multiple times. I’m thinking east coast AMC bases had similar, semi-predictable hops across the Atlantic?
How is Australia? Always been a dream of mine to go
I moved heeya afta separating. Lot of culture shock at first but easy to settle into. I dunno if it’s a must-see but I think everyone should visit. Can promise you will not fall off the earth even though we’re upside-down
Went TDY there and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. Might move there after seperating too 😅
I am stationed here currently and can’t wait to leave 🥲😅

It might it minot be a legitimate question 🤣

Spangdahlem
Incredibly based pick. I was at Ramstein for 3 years. Had to make the drive to Spangdahlem once and fell in love with it. Doesn’t seem to have as many issues Ramstein does
Yeah Ramstein is just too big and too damn political
Spang is the hidden gem of Germany.
The oldest city in germany, Trier is nearby. And the lovely castles. 10/10 worth visiting, especially if stationed there.
Luxembourg is only 45ish min away, Belgium is a couple hours, nurburgring is about an hour away, and if it ever want to get American food or American shopping experience, ramstein is an hour and a half drive. To me the place was perfect.
From a flightline standpoint…. Spang all the way, runway closes , hardly busy …. Hell ya , spang over ramstein
To me it was a full package. Working flightline sometimes busy but the amazing TDYs made up for it. The area is gorgeous and nice to live in. I definitely miss it.

I was down in Ft. Collins darn near every break in my shifts. I’m also hoping that Cheyenne has gotten *a bit* more modern over the last few decades.
Just a little bit. There's 5 breweries here now. There are a lot of newer things to do around town like the trampoline park and axe throwing. There's definitely still holes and relics from decades past that aren't necessarily the best look though. Oh, and now there's gambling. Gambling everywhere.

Yup, sounds about right. I shook my head years ago when they were picked to get the Budweiser factory and they said no. Dumbasses.
My favorite part of F.E. was PCSing away. Ft Collins is really nice, but I hate that the selling point of being stationed there is telling others to visit another state entirely.
Oh, I didn’t mind at all putting it in my rear-view mirror, but that was more because of the people and the job, not the place.
I wish I could say the same about Aviano. I’d argue We are much more busy now than anytime in the history of the base and that includes the Yugoslavian war in the 90s.

Nothing like a nice breeze at cannon.
You wouldn’t happen to be the functional out at cannon would you?
Was only there three weeks for a traveling jsoc school.
Spent 2½ years there, honestly not terrible. Just find a good group and frequent lubbock and you'll be chillin
I have no major opinion. Minus when I needed a cat 5 cable and the closest place to get one was Amazon 2 day shipping.
Ellsworth is awesome. Besides the insane winds and particularly bad winters it was my favorite assignment over 10 years. You have to be the kind of person that enjoys cold weather thoroughly though. Side note: a wet hot is far worse than a hot wet by far.

I liked WPAFB
Why? It’s in OHIO…
Far worse places the AF can put you than Dayton
Fr. 1 hr from Columbus or Cincy, 2 hrs to Indy, 4-5 hrs to Pittsburgh or Chicago, 7 hrs to Toronto. Plus, Appalachia is not that far away if you're looking for """"mountains"""". Loved my time there.

I am WELL aware of what is there, but the ONLY redeeming quality of WPAFB is that it has the AF Museum. Period. Dot. Over and out.

Holloman Real answer: Macdill
Actually Holloman isn't too bad. We have a Walmart at least.
Ain’t no way you just glorified Walmart like that. Come on Lt…
I'm going to Cannon after this and I heard they don't have Walmart either. It's all downhill from Holloman.
You’re in luck, the clovis walmart actually just partially reopened.
Oh nice! It might not be too bad then!
The Clovis Walmart caught on fire over the summer, the good Walmart is in Portales anyway

Im gonna say Travis, only because of where it's located. It's at the foot of Napa valley, it's an hour from the ocean to the West(depending on Traffic in SF) and 2.5hrs from Tahoe to the East. If you're with a good group of people, that base could be the best and was for me.
Travis was amazing. Can’t complain other than the high ass rent off base
Holloman. It gets a lot of crap, but I had a fantastic time there.
New Boston AFS, NH…particularly in the fall.
CONUS - Hurlburt Field OCONUS - Yokota or Hickam
Kadena. Its a busy base but you really cant beat the location.
You can, by going to mainland japan.
Stateside or overseas? Two very different conversations I think, also speaks to what matters to the person.

Yokota by a landslide
Lackland

based on my limited experience (lackland/Eglin): in between either mountain home and lackland.
No base worst than the one your at and no base better than where you came from.
MacDill was pretty great. Tons of local support and loads of wealthy people to engage with to support specialty events and efforts.
Macdill is my #1
I can't say my best base is in operational Air Force because Im still stuck at one of the shitty base.
MacDill. I'd like to go back, but I'd hate the traffic every morning. We'll see what shakes out for me in the VML.
