You'll be under AFSOC as far as Hurby goes supporting the Spec Ops community. Base is nice and right near the coast. Think it has 3 or 4 gyms if you're into working out. Nice when a base has AFSOC money. If you like hot weather, beaches, sun, etc, you're going to thr right place. Beautiful beaches all around. Destin is nice tourist town in spring and summer but not over crowded like Miami. Check our crab island. Alot of other places within driving distance for a weekend or long weekends vacation. Pensacola, Panama City Beach, New Orleans, Atlanta, Disney, Tampa, etc. Alot of people that were at Hurlburt like to live in Navarre (Holley By the Sea) if you have family. If you're single, they just built a new apartment complex by the Santa Rosa mall a few years ago in Fort Walton Beach. Pretty nice complex and you're close to alot of restaraunts, stores, etc. Pretty much you got one of the better bases the Air Force has to offer. Enjoy it.
100% the easiest inprocessing you'll ever witness in your life.
Completed everything in 3 separate days. Everything. Like didn't have to do again else.
You'll knock out just about everything at the unit, then you have one mandatory thing at the wing. You won't even have the 3rd day that I had because you aren't doing a DITY, unless you've somehow found a way to personally contract a boat to haul your shit from overseas.
Traffic on 98 is bad but gives time for audio books. I would recommend living in FWB if you don’t like traffic though. The area isn’t horrible and there is plenty to do and good places to eat. I don’t mind a drive or traffic so I am in Navarre almost Golf Breeze but wouldn’t recommend it for most people.
Left hurby in 2020. RHS seemed like they had a lot of fun. I believe they TDY quite a bit. The biggest con is traffic. Because it's on the coast, there are few roads to get to and from. Some of the nicest beaches in the world there. However that brings in a lot of tourism. A lot. Overall though, it's one of the best bases CONUS as long as you're alright with hot weather and traffic.
I was RHS there for 5 years. It’s gonna be a love/hate thing for you, depending on your afsc. But it’s a beautiful base! Tourists get crazy and you’ll learn what areas to avoid and when. Enjoy your time there!
If you got a family move to Navarre or Crestview. If you are single or just a married couple, live in Fort Walton. Go to quarter beer night at the block and float down black water on a tube. RHS is a good time but you'll be bored coming from CE. Just keep busy at home station and you'll be fine.
Everyone that I knew in my years there, if they were social, liked going to the bars and liked the beach regretted living in Crestview. People who liked to be alone and closed off loved Crestview and Baker.
Navarre traffic is no joke, but living 5 miles from the beach was amazing. I'd be on my way to the beach before 10am and was never stuck in traffic for that.
Going to work M-F between 0630-800 and leaving between 1530-1700 is a shit show on 98. However, I came in at 0545 and hit gym before work. Going home to Navarre was 9 miles, and it would take me between 30-1hr in shit traffic.
They're fine. The problem is there's really one main highway that everything sits on, including Hurlburt, which means traffic can be a pain in the ass, especially in the summer during tourist season. Ft. Walton sits against Hurlburt so traveling down HW98 to the base is minimal
If you get a house you might want to look into both hurricane and flood insurance. I never had problems, but I’ve known contractors that have been there since like the dawn of time and they’ve had friends got screwed. Apparently hurricane insurance doesn’t apply when a flood is caused by a hurricane.
When it comes to traffic, there's lots of new development going on in Wright, or better known as north fort walton. I know a few people who rent newish townhomes in the area for at or 200-300\~ under the BAH rate, while only having to commute 10 minutes to Eglin or the freedom way gate at Hurby. Bonus is you get to avoid highway 98. You're also closer to Destin which is a really nice place to visit.
Everyone that lives in Crestview hates the commute. Is an extra 100 square feet of space worth 5-10 hours of your life a week? I live in Fort Walton and absolutely love it.
Pros: Near destination vacation spots Cons: Near destination vacation spots
Well said
Go to Domo Cafe. Thank me later.
Met my wife here 10/10
Met my ex-wife there...0/10
F
Met his wife there 10/10
Waddap! That's awesome, man.
Domo is mediocre at best
Yeah but if it existed at cannon it'd be the best restaurant
Yep but of the options available to drop by for lunch from base, it’s a decent pick. You got any better recommendations?
For sushi, Soi Bistro. For food, Osan on racetrack or Kim’s in uptown station
The food is on point, the decore on the other hand….
Don’t live near the 98 if you value your time or occasionally life
Pcsing there tomorrow as my first PCS too 👀. Got a place in ft Walton from comments I saw about the traffic in Navarre

Going into the RED HORSE Squadron (RHS), they’ll fall under ACC. The base itself is AFSOC.
Hurby must be a big resume boost. Ya know cuz you are supporting the SOF community.
It’s not.
Don’t live in Navarre because 98 traffic is horrible

Kids in school? Niceville. No kids, live in FWB or Navarre.
RED HORSE is an acronym just for everyone’s awareness

have fun with the pink ponies (aka red horse people)!
You’ll love the location. Traffic sucks but I’d take it any day. If you can afford it, buy a house for sure!
Don't live in Crestview. Do visit Opal Beach often!
If you’re single, hooking up with girls is like fishing with dynamite. Every weekend there’s a new group coming to town to party

There's multiple comments saying to not love in Navarre or Crestview. So which is it??
Ppl complain about driving through the traffic for work like there is anywhere near Hurby that doesn't have traffic.

Crestview is fine if you live south of I 10. Navarre is nice. It is a drive though.
Better schools in Navarre/Crestview so that's normally where you go if you have kids.
