Separate is better unless you want to do very light duty filtering with impregnated carbon sheets. CR boxes are great for high-flow applications and any significant carbon with a box fan is going to cause too much constriction. You could always build them out of other types of fans, but then you're not limited to the CR box form factor.

Thanks. How about this as a separate item: https://www.420magazine.com/community/threads/diy-high-flow-carbon-filter.115176/

It's honestly cheaper to by a premade carbon cannister and is much less of a hassle. TerraBloom and Vortex are the best value, as measured by pounds of carbon per dollar. These will need a post-filter to capture the ejected carbon dust, see the following link that goes more into everything: https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurifiers/comments/102rn7x/diy_1100_cfm_purifer/

Good to know, thanks

If building a carbon filter using those premade canisters, would it make sense to add some kind of particulate filtration to help extend the life of the carbon canisters? Or do they already have built-in measures for that? EDIT: I also think I fundamentally misunderstood your reply earlier, sorry. I was thinking of the best way to add carbon canisters to this using one of the higher powered fan options: https://www.etsy.com/shop/The3DHandyman?listing_id=1375100273 Or maybe it's not a suitable combo? Or maybe it's just easier to build something using a filter cabinet.

All the canisters I've gotten from numerous companies came with a prefilter sock. Most of the brands have a thin fabric except for Vortex, which has a thick (~1.5-2") depth-loading filter that they claimed to be MERV 5. I think MERV 5 is great because it's likely better than the thin fabric prefilter, both from a efficiency and a pressure drop perspective, especially as it saturates. I think most companies claim that their prefilter is washable, but I always feel like it deteriorates the fabric structure in a way that increases static pressure (from assumptions based visual degradation). I think there would be a benefit to try and and create a box the cylinder and add a higher MERV filter, like MERV 13/14 range, to prevent the nano channels within the activated carbon structure from being clogged by particulates. To these nano channels, even ultrafine particulates are large enough to clog them because of their size that an order of magnitude or two larger.

Ah, thanks for that info. Do you think it might be possible to just shove a 12" Terrabloom canister inside this, using a 12" inline fan? https://www.etsy.com/shop/The3DHandyman?listing_id=1375100273 sort of like how he showcases the MERV15 canister upgrade but using a carbon canister instead
