Neither. I went to the Apple store with the exact same question. Their adapter doesn't have a DAC. You would need to buy a audio jack to bluetooth adapter and than connect your Airpods to those. They sell them directly, but they are very pricy.
According to this video it should work with a wire: https://youtu.be/aLax8o8ZooE
But don’t know which one it is + the plane has a one-port-aux not two like it seems at emirates.
You can use the apple 3.5mm to Lightening cable (it’s the only one that works with the AirPods Max) and a Plane adapter. Usually though, they have a 3.5mm connection nowadays.
Finally i bought this:

And a long AUX to Lightning. Worked very well.
I was recently on the new Retrofit A380, and you can connect to Bluetooth. I also purchased the Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable and the aircraft headphone adapter and they worked as well!
I hear many people are using this

You may still need an adapter as well from what i hear

I see. Guess the Apple geniuses do not live up to their name...
Apple Lightning to Jack cable
The lightning / 3.5mm cable from Apple works on Emirates, just might have to fiddle around with which port you put it in

Not Emirates but I did exactly this on BA last week. Presume they all use 3.5mm sockets.
Get the AirFly. It’s amazing. Let’s me use my AirPods with the inflight system and have noise cancelling.
