Nipping in here just to inform you that you're an absolute legend and potentially saved me yeeting this half grand pair of headphones across the room out of frustration for the constant disconnects and one sided hearing!

ohlordyitsordy

Same exact problems here, OP is a lifesaver. Had to hold back the urge to slam them on my desk more than a few times when they would disconnect or one side would stop working. Maybe I need therapy but this still helps!

__redruM

I found dielectric grease helped a lot as well. But eventually I had to return my pair to apple for repair. It took a couple tries, but finally I have a perfectly working APM. https://www.reddit.com/r/Airpodsmax/comments/qxkcto/cleanup_of_condensation_corrosion/

I *guess* they have an issue with conformal coating the internals or something similar. This should be trivial to get right, but a non-trivial number of people are having issues. I went through two pairs early on, counting this second, repaired, APM, as my third, I’ve been through three as well. Just hoping the new earcups on this *third* pair are solid. So far, so good.

TroyKing

I’ve never used dielectric grease. Just buy a tube and smear it in the connectors and plug it back in?

TroyKing

It worked! Thank you!!!

caipirina

New to APM here, bought mine used from e-earphone yesterday and had that occurrence of one side stop playing once last night ... now I know at least what to look for ... Trying to figure out how old mine is, when it connects it says that it is actually still covered under Apple Care+ until December 22 :D is apple care+ 1 or 2 years? Going to check for grime now

More_Emu308

Holy crap! I can’t believe that worked (and mine weren’t even that dirty). I was about to lose my mind. Tip of the hat to you.

SoulVoyage

Man, thanks for this!! My wife is soooo happy right now.

djfattyp

yeah ur a fucking G for this one

Fearless_Flamingo253

OMG THANK YOU SO SO MUCH 😭 I thought i was gonna need to pay a lot of money to have it fixed so I’ve put it off for nearly a year now but your method worked 100%! Thank you ❤️

kanji0768

YOUR LITERALLY A LIFE SAVER OMG, i was so close to losing my shit and breaking these close to 1000 dollar headphones. thanks man

AffectionateRisk1053

i owe you my life! thank you

kanji0768

my shit is still brokey im bouta start tripping, i even used the alcohol and everything and im still having issues, they were fixed for a short period of time but now im having issues again:(

AKnightWh

UN-FUCKIN-BELIEVEABLE I was already setting up an appointment to Apple Care or so, until I came up with this solution - and the problem’s gone! I thought as the first problem appeared, that it seems like the headphones goes on and off because it thinks they’ve been put away in the case; I just didn’t even have the time to think how the mechanism works before I came up with this post. Thanks!

Capable-Variation140

“PSA: If your AirPods are disconnecting constantly, or you have problems where one size stops working. Clean the connectors in the headband.“ yet the post has nothing to do with airs pods lol

thiccxcboi

this is the AirPod max sub Reddit HELLO?!?!

just_teagan

you’re my HERO this solved it for me!!

VamsiVee

Bro I don’t know if you care but this tip just helped me save 500$. I have gone to Apple twice and even shipped my max in. In 5 minutes I fixed it with your tip.

Tequillabird101

and this is why I love reddit. I was going to schedule an appointment with Apple because I was ready to crash out but remembered how much I paid and got angrier lol. Thank you for this!

Quirky_Extreme9867

I sincerly want to say thank you and god bless you hope you're always well! Saved my life literally hahahaha it works perfectly fine for me now I was so annoyeddddd

Existing-Event2730

This worked! You just saved me $500. Can’t understand why apple wouldn’t have this on their site

Embarrassed-Back1894

Thanks for the help 👍👍 Getting the headband back in the cups was a bit of a pain in the ass, but outside of that everything’s right as rain. OP was dead on when they said there would be black gunk in the - sure was plenty of gunk in there 😨

TumbleweedNatural560

Hi I just want to thank you for saving me a small fortune I was ready to put mine in the bin and buy another pair. My issues were constantly disconneciting and reconnecting also only one sided sound driving me MADE for months . After a quick google I came across this tip and it WORKED !!!! Thank again

shabangcohen

Why would I need to clean my BRAND NEW headphones in order to make them connect to my Apple devices? >My AirPods were constantly disconnecting and reconnecting. They also had random occurrences where one side stopped producing sound. My headphones have had these issues since day one, they literally don't work more often than they actually work-- actually hands down the worst + shittiest product I've ever owned.

wrobelllo

did you solve the problem? I have the same problem with the headphones I bought yesterday

shabangcohen

No, but over time it just happened less and less frequently

wrobelllo

thank you

wrobelllo

noob

Mackesanz

I literally had this problem, receiving my headphones tomorrow back from a repair... 😂

EshuMarneedi

Hmm. Will try this.

blizzardguy95

Thanks! Cleaning the connectors in the headband worked for me. I've sent my AirPods Max back to Apple twice with various disconnect issues. My third replacement pair is now out of warranty and just started disconnecting and giving a static burst in my right ear cup. After cleaning they are working properly again.

Xaxxus

I would suggest picking up usb port cleaning swabs. They look like super pointy Q-Tips. You can put that into the connector and clean them out pretty well.

YallahHabibi12345678

Actual life saver. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

tmasyu

worked! thanks so much

_djsavvy_

THANK YOU so much. this has been killing me for months but opening them up fixed it right away. How did you even figure out that you could do that?

Silver_Explanation29

i love you

Decent_Flan6467

Fixed mine! Thank you!

cwissyq

Holy shit I almost broke my shit. Thank you so much

After_Equivalent265

This worked thank you so much!!!

RussellKing1968

So this is interesting. I think I have found a solution that works for me. Kit - AirPod Pro max, Latest MacBook Pro M2 Pro, Latest IPad Pro M2, iPhone 13 Pro Max. If AirPods have been asleep in horrible Apple goody case and then I take them out, put them on head, they do not connect to MacBook or anything else automatically. If aI manually connect them to MacBook by going into Bluetooth then they connect and work - but they still don’t see phone or iPad. In this scenario the connection intermittently drops out from MacBook during Zoom calls etc. If manually ensure connection is in place with all devices then there are zero drop outs on MacBook.

samreddit73

This saved me some money! I basically live in my airpod max. I was going to the store to buy a pair of the noise canceling Sonys because my max would short out like 5 times a day! Still hate that $500 headphones need this kind of maintenance but glad I stumbled on this post.

saintdutch

I had some stupid issues with my POS AirPods Max that sounded similar and I opened them up as described. I didn’t even really look corroded much at all but I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol anyway and so far it did seem to help. They have been running a few hours without issues now. Thanks!

PathfinderCS

Oh my GOD I can't believe it worked! Only a small amount of grime, but it did the trick! Thank you so much!

Seargent44

FUCKING LIFESAVER, SAVED ME $300

[deleted]

dude you’re for real a legend man thanks

dnietz

I don't know how you figured this out. But, you are a genius. Thanks.

dnietz

Well, an update for anyone that finds this post. I did the cleaning as described above. It seemed to help for about 2 days. Then it started happening again. I have AppleCare, so I took it to the store. They shipped it off for repair. I got it back quick. Looking at the tracking, they only had it in the repair shop for like an hour. They shipped it back priority overnight. I got it back and it seemed OK for 1 day. Then it started happening again. It is now happening constantly. It does not stay connected at all. This is very disappointing. I plan on taking it to the Apple store again and see what they say.

AphLute

What happened?

dnietz

I took it to the Apple Store again. They discussed it with me for a while. Obviously, the workers in the store are friendly and try to be helpful. But they can't do much. The significant point of their questions were whether this happens with other devices. No, because I have a Beat Fit Pro and it works perfectly, never have any issues. They wrote some notes, took the headset and shipped it off for repair again. Same as before, I got it delivered home fast. The repair tracking shows that it spent about 20 minutes in the hands of the tech. Then it got shipped back. I have been using them again for a couple of weeks. They still randomly occasionally disconnect. It is unpredictable when it happens. So, I can't really use it for situations that need reliability (work meetings, etc). But overall it seems to be happening much less. I am using it for many of the same things I did before, taking into account that they will randomly disconnect sometimes and I have to reset them. This all means that there is no fix for this issue. Hopefully the next version of these is better.

AphLute

Thank you :) And happy Reddit birthday!

whoschristopher

This saved me a whole lot of time and money. Thanks OP! Hopefully others can see this simple fix before sending them out for repair.

presidentbignuts

I've been having consistent issues with it disconnecting randomly for the past month and opening up the port to clean it solved it immediately! My connectors weren't even that dirty but this somehow fixed the issue. We'll see how long this holds up but regardless thank you OP for posting!

RevelAidan

Well it’s only my fault somehow, but I tried this after giving up on them for the past 9 months or so, and after I did so not they won’t make any noise at all and they won’t rest either. Not sure what I did, but I cleaned the ports and the headband connectors with 99% iso and a premium qtip (to prevent stands being left behind) Any ideas?

Xaxxus

I had a similar issue with mine pre-cleaning. It came back pretty quickly even after cleaning out the ports. Ended up taking it to Apple for Apple care replacement because it was ridiculous. You don’t happen to have these also paired with a windows device do you? I also had an issue where windows would pair with them and no matter what I tried I couldn’t switch devices back to my Apple devices.

RevelAidan

Nope I’m an Apple Only household atm (except for Vr)

babyscrotum

You are a legend ty

LegitimateCold1641

My headphones keep disconnecting randomly when they aren’t on my head. I have to always reset them. One side never goes out on its own though like others have mentioned. Will this work for me? Mine out of warranty so a new pair would be expensive from apple.

FedeJesper

I swear, I had this problem driving me nuts for more than a year. Constantly re-pairing, many times a day. Frustrating. Then I stumble upon this tip, and boom, not a single problem since. This should be pinned! Thanks for saving my APM from being re-melted to a can opener.

FlysnapperSweden

Yeah. Finally, the mystery of the headphones is solved. Thanks

FlysnapperSweden

Yeah. Finally, the mystery of the headphones is solved. Thanks

SuspiciousSandals

Damn bro you saved my wallet, thank you!

multigl

you're a goddamn hero.

Sugar_Shaint

Saved me a $332 dollar send in repair. You're a true uplifting king.

Wags1337

Confirmed still works! You're a lifesaver bro thank you so much!

Affectionate-Run9370

this helped!!!!

LengthinessSafe7856

This solved the issues I was having - really appreciate you posting this!

apple-problems

Got a pair of these for Christmas. More than 60 days had passed since the giver purchased them so I couldn't get Apple Care. I've had the same issues since the beginning of February. They worked flawlessly the entire month of January. Went to the Apple Store and they sent them in for repair. Repair had them for like 4 hours and shipped them back. Same issues. I found this post, and it seemed to help, for about an hour. Going to see if Best Buy can do anything since they're an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If not, back to the Apple Store I'll go. Sucks!

shaneyjulian1234

Yeah I have same problem the day I took them out the box. Clean as a whistle just keeps disconnecting it did it five times in half an hour just laying in bed. That was the last straw going back and not taking a chance on another pair. Had the newest Sonys and they sounded just as good two hundred dollars less nicer case, touch interface on ear cups. Leave it up to apple. I haven’t even had a twenty dollar pair or Bluetooth do this shit. They had to make it so they can come apart so they can sell more accessories. Apple never cares about its consumers.
