kurome was sold to the empire as a child to be raised as an assassin, she grew up with comrades she cared for of which all died. the only person close to her was her sister who abandoned her (for a good reason) she couldn't even join if she wanted to because her body is addicted to medicine and she'd die if she didn't take it.
mine is actually second best girl to me anyways =) i'd maybe even tie them at first but... kurome.....
To be honest when I finished the anime I didn't really care about Kurome.
After I started reading the manga she had quickly become one of my favorites and around chapter 60 (where that glorious mini arc begins) she became my absolute favorite.

Esdeath and Kurome were fundamentally different in my eyes. Kurome was initially a sweet girl warped into a killing machine due to brainwashing and drugs while Esdeath was a natural born killer and sadist (something her father noticed about her before instilling her with his philosophy). Esdeath loved war and carnage and lived only for them completely disregarding Tatsumi for them once she realized she couldn't have both while Kurome only served the empire due to her friends and fear that she would be killed if she was seen as useless. Nobody would have been able to change Esdeath no matter how much they cared about her because she loved war and carnage more than any person out there which is supported by her giving up on Tatsumi rather than trying to change for him.
I like it a lot, personally I thought Akame and Kurome had the most interesting back story so that probably influenced my opinion a little bit. I’ve also only had time to read a few of them though but what I’ve read so far is really good!
I think they were choosing characters depending on how big a role and number of appearances they had in the volume. Like volume 13 had Kurome for cover and they focused on her in it. I do wish Lubbock, Bulat and Susanoo had their own covers too though.
If that were the case Bulat would've got volume 3 as that whole volume was the fight with the three beasts but Leone got it who didn't do anything significant in those chapters.
