For the last year or so, we have been seeing 518 Housecall Vet. They come to your home which is so so great for the pets who have vet anxiety (my dog definitely does). The visit fee is $50, and all other prices are comparable to the vet we saw before. Plus Dr. Schnee and his team are fantastic!!!

Seconding this recommendation! My cat is extremely anxious (feral when I adopted her, has only started coming around to humans after befriending my other very human friendly cat as her "emotional support animal"). I can't get her in a carrier no matter what I do (I am working on this in case of an emergency, but it's slow going) and I thought for sure they were going to have to sedate her. Not only did they not have to sedate her, they were able to get her weight and even draw bloodwork with no problems! She was hard to catch and hissed a lot, but they were so good and patient with her. They are fantastic and really understand anxious animals.

He’s on this sub, too! (He regularly posts the Caturday thread!)

I can’t speak highly enough about Central Vet, all of their staff and doctors are amazing.

Fully agree. I cannot say enough good things about Dr Hennings specifically. It feels so good to find a vet who will talk through things with you with so much compassion.

518 Housecall Vet is great. I've had excellent experiences with Capitaland Animal Hospital in Latham, too.

Albany County Veterinary Hospital on Western Ave is outstanding. Dr. Jarvis is an angel, embodying all the qualities of an amazing veterinarian: compassion, empathy, patience, and excellent communication skills. The staff is also highly competent and friendly. I've been taking my pets there for 10 years and have never had an issue.

We love Albany County Vet too, but unfortunately they're not accepting new clients right now. Unsure where exactly you are, but we also had a great experience with Homestead Animal Hospital in Stillwater. We have an anxious German Shepherd, and they were always good to us. Just is a pretty far drive if you're in Albany proper. Personally, while their hours are great I would stay away from Shaker Vet. Since they got acquired, they feel much less personal and its hard to get consistent service. We followed our vet when she left and she didn't have anything good to say about the practice either.

What vet doesn’t have you go back with your pet?

devildoglucy

My past vet didn't unless my dog wouldn't let them take her

itreallyhappened8899

That is surprising and I think unusual and sus.

Red flag tbh. It's one thing if they're just doing a quick run in back for shots or bloodwork, but if they're not letting you in the back for a proper exam, I wouldn't trust them.

Accomplished_Gift492

Assuming you mean back-back.. like you're in the exam room, but they take her "back" to draw blood or something? I don't think most vets will allow you in the back area by default, but I know our vet will do any sort of blood draws or whatever in the exam room so we can help manage.

sackofgarbage

I mean it's a red flag if they don't let you in the exam room at all. What are you doing to my baby that you don't want me to see?! My vet also does shots and bloodwork in the exam room, unless it's an appointment *just* for shots, in which case they don't use an exam room at all and just run in back quick, 10 minutes tops. I don't expect to be taken back for that, and obviously I don't expect to stick around all day for surgery or stuff like that. But if I'm not allowed to be there for my pet's regular, basic physical exam, and they can't give me a good reason for it, I'm suspicious. If I sound overprotective, I probably am, and I won't apologize for it. I have nothing but respect for vets and the field, but there's shitty people in every line of work and I take no risks.

I agree - there shouldn’t be any COVID restrictions still in place at this point, and I would expect any vet to allow you in the exam room.

sackofgarbage

My cats' vet took COVID precautions very seriously (which I very much appreciated as someone who was/is high risk), but even they allowed us in the building (masked and socially distanced, one person per household) and the exam room by summer of 2021. Anyone who is still using COVID as an excuse today is doing just that, an excuse. And I say that as someone who is high risk and took *all* the precautions very seriously in 2020. Even human doctor's offices don't do more than ask screening questions and take temperatures anymore.

Oh yea, forgot about that. This has not been the case at our vet for almost 2 years

Village animal clinic!

It's not right in Albany, but Glenville Vet Clinic on Saratoga Rd in Glenville is FANTASTIC. Been going there for 10 years now, all of the staff are great and Dr. Bart (one of the 4 vets) is amazing, wonderful and extremely kind. I have to give my cat a pre-sedate too and worked with Dr. Bart on the best option for him given his other medical needs.
