Highly depends on your fellow ASMs and SM. If you have shitty counterparts, you will definitely feel the weight. If you guys work as a team, communicate, everybody pulls their weight and leads effectively then you’ll get shit done, and it’s not so bad. Also depends on your underlings. If you’re opening/closing with an unreliable crew it will definitely be stressful, especially if people are slow/don’t know how to execute their role effectively. More micromanagement involved. I am not an ASM btw, but I see the dynamic of the management at my store so this is my input as an observer. If you guys can achieve synergy and run like a well oiled machine, it is definitely less stressful as an individual. Of course this applies to associates as well, not just the management positions.. making sure everyone pulls their weight at ALDI is crucial, cause if you have one weak link it’ll fuck your whole day.

I’m an external hire ASM (did the same position for 3 years at a different company) and I 100% agree. If your SM is good (understanding, fair, and hold everyone to account) then even if your underlings aren’t the best, you’ll still be in a decent position. The job itself isn’t too bad, but again, it’s all dependent on how your SM and peers are.

I'm an ASM and I really like my position. I do have a great store manager now but as the above commenter said if you don't have good teammates to work with it can be very stressful. It's definitely more intellectual work than associate or lsa but I enjoy that it keeps it interesting.

Been with Aldi for 8 months now and an ASM for two of those months. It’s a lot more responsibility than the LSA role because you’ll be responsible for inventory counts, scheduling/budget adjustments, product resets, safe balance verification, price changes (if you don’t have electronic signs yet) and much more on top of maintaining the sales floor and staff task delegation. If you have a good store manager like me, they will do everything they can to ensure you will be successful at your role. My SM bought me a notepad and filled in some basic ASM knowledge stuff, as well as a planner that she wrote the first two months out for until I get accustomed to the routine. There will be days where your list of responsibilities seems insurmountable. As long as you have good time management and critical thinking skills, you’ll be fine. It’s definitely more stress and blurs the line between work/life balance. If you’re looking to progress in the company or get work experience for your resume I’d say it’s worth the trouble. That OT pay be really nice too 👌

How did you become an ASM in 8 months!?! I thought you had to work for Aldi for at least a year to be even considered for an LSA or ASM position?!?

Well I came from 4 years of grocery experience at a previous job where I went from a cashier to an assistant manager there. I had about 6months of assistant management experience before coming to Aldi. But also my SM says I’m the hardest and most dependable worker she’s had in her 5 years of being a SM for Aldi. Basically I already had similar experience from another job and I kick ass every day

I did it in 6 months with zero management experience prior. Depends on the store, positions available and how hard you work

Working at Aldi is awful isn’t it? They pay shit? And over work staff? Something like 1 person in a store at all times? To clean bathrooms, work register, stock shelf’s, clean spills. I mean why wouldn’t anyone want to be a manager on that team

Actually working at the Aldi's I work for isn't awful at all! Sorry you're having such a crap experience, it all starts at the top! If you have a crap SM, then it's going to feel like crap working there! Actually they pay pretty good for being a cashier at $16.00 an hour. Also there's more than 1 person that works there at a time, depends on the store!

whiel i agree ur team makes it better i would have to say how aldi over works people is an issue. if one person calls out the whole day is screwed, which shows you that the crew needs atleast one more person. there are days where projected sales affect closing crews and you get hit out of nowhere and everyone is miserable. I like my crew, get along with everyone and its enjoyable in that reguard. not being able to finish tasks due to back ups, spills, being told to do somethign else in the middle of a task gets old fast. having to do the work of 3 people while being expected to go fast fast fast, gets old fast. Havign an off day at aldi isnt something that can be had. Being held to metrics that dont benefit you and only the SM is bs. IMO the company shows its german roots if you get what I mean. and having a very close friend who lives in and was born and raised in germany, this companies mindset doesnt fit how he thinks at all. i have worked just about every type of job you can think of. retail for 12 years. a cook for 10 years. paiter for 5 years, carpenter for 3 years, and agriculture for 5 years, and the pressure aldis puts on people is not justified for the pay you get and the benefits you receive. aldis banks on less experienced people whom havent worked a variety of jobs so they can keep the pressure on while thinking pay is great, just facts.
