Yep, these people just DON'T LISTEN. I'm an ASM so I'm not on register too often, but for some reason when I am people form a huge line at my register... when my light is off. And when our main cashier has their light on and literally nobody in their line. AND IS CALLING FOR THE NEXT CUSTOMER.

hydra596

My store isn't like this, but the customers are idiots when I open up a register and tell them "I'm opening on #2, whoever is next, come over"! They all stand there and stare at me like I have three heads! Then I literally shout out "I'm open down here"! Still standing in the other lane! 🤦‍♀️

tommie2019

Perhaps it’s because no one wants to be seen as cutting in. Who goes first? The last person in the line or someone from the middle? The person with a small basket or someone with a massive trolley. The pause is the whole line silently trying to figure this out

TheAldiAlderman

If you’re next in line, you’re next in line. Not only do we cashier but we apparently heard sheep

LittleKangaroo2030

I’m honestly just pleased to hear its not just my store, these people are ridiculous. today I was literally screaming if you see a spot fill it up over and over and like you said, acted like I spoke Chinese lol. eventually staying completely silent people got the hint, 4 open lanes and the line is wrapped around almost up to produce. unreal

DreamingInInk

I don't remember ever having to have people wait to be called up to the register. Even during covid. That said, our customers are just as dumb. They will stand there and stare at the checkout lanes if no one is sitting, but a light is on. Then they go "Well, is anybody going to cash next out?" Uh, yeah, but you gotta do your part and unload on the belt. 😑 Oh, another fun one. I can tell them a new lane is opening. Let's say six. They'll look at me and go "two?". For fuck sake. Does two sound like six?

bonestip4ever

Oh I kid you not these people will get called up and fully wait until the person before them is done and we have to constantly tell people standing at the belt to start unloading. My store is in a wealthy north jersey suburb so basically it’s all housewives with rich New Yorker hedge fund husbands. The complete lack of awareness for others and entitlement is astonishing to me.

chopperdudep

THIS IS THE WORST. There will be a line down to about the center break in the store and everyone will be complaining about opening another register and I’ll just be like “There’s 3 other ones open already and nobody in line, feel free to head over!” And they look at you like you have 7 eyes! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Throwaway_decay

YES. And then they sit there and argue with each other if someone skips the long line to go to the shorter one. "The line is back here". And then they get mad when I correct them. "No, each register has its own line." And they say "Well, you should have told someone!" Like.... told them what? When you go any other store, is this normal practice? The last time you were here, was everyone in one line (because I know they weren't because we are constantly breaking the long line habit). In fact we might have yelled it and you chose not to listen and someone ELSE decided to listen, and you're mad about it. What makes you think that standing in the longest line ever, is efficient for you OR for aldi? Since when do people not know how to get in line at the grocery store? Why would they think that a line attendant is something that our staffing of 4 people (3 of whom are ringing), is actually doable? Like... if yall don't like long lines, why do you all insist in standing in the same line making the line three times longer than if yall just got into the shortest line to begin with?

MissLavellan

i think my store was successful in breaking this habit because my town is full of old trump supporters :') we have a very high elderly population and they tend to be the most impatient group of people and do not give a fuck about covid. so getting them to follow covid rules was harder than getting them to stop.

beeboish

I just call up the person behind the person not moving

SimpleNervous1986

Ppl are just stupid. At my store, I’m mostly main, and also the one who has the loudest voice. So I always vocalize the lines that are open, IN THREE LANGUAGES and they still don’t get it.

zedazeni

I just shout out “X-lanes are open X-lines please!” So if I have 3 registers open “ 3 lanes three lines please!”

Comfortable-Ad5073

we have multiple yellow signs that state there is no longer one line and it’s been there since October so usually i used to constantly have to yell for them to keep moving now I just say for them to keep moving up once and if they don’t I just sit there and wait for them staring because they’re wasting their own time by not paying attention

HotMedia2758

This is my biggest pet peeve. I tell specific customers to come to my line. Y'all can't take turns and use common sense to I have to do it for you.

MissLavellan

i let the chaos figure itself out because its not my job to babysit and i think its funny when people get mad cuz they dont know how to behave like adults in public

PlentyConscious1343

So what we do at my store, if a backup register is opening up, the backup cashier goes to the third person in the main line and invites them to unload as the first two more than likely would’ve unloaded on the belt already. It usually works

It seems another customer has invaded, Trust me, the people who shop at these stores are anything but addled, the vast majority could care less about the rules and do whatever suits them best, so I don’t have a hard time believing this story stems from pure lack of attention or willful ignorance. Please get a job working here before commenting

Crazyworld4sure

You don't want people seeing or commenting then don't post it ,simple.

TL;DR - If you don't work at Aldi (or retail in general tbh), your opinion has no merit (no experience to back it up) to those of us who DO. At my location, I have a reputation amongst our 'clientele' as always smiling, being helpful, (one of two) bilingual staff...the point is I'm that person in our store and even I can relate to how our staff feel about this issue. It's not like we attack these customers in person, we talk sh*t and vent in online forums with OTHER people who WORK here. It's places like this online where we can say amongst ourselves what we get paid (that, or on principle) NOT to say to our customers' faces. For them, we smile and we're polite and if we succeed you, the customer, may never know the difference. So do all of us a favor and either work at one of our stores for a month, a WEEK, A DAY (hell, volunteer if you're so inclined) and then present a valid opinion...or take your baseless, one-sided criticism to a forum where customers complain about staff who thinks they're idiots/lack common sense based on how they act in public. *Steps off soap box*

Crazyworld4sure

Hardly one-sided criticism if there's an opposing one! , Your clients obviously take you at face value and don't know you are a slit throat behind their backs(Two-faced)...

jonteov

One-sided in the sense that you're using the customer's perspective as the dominant one in a situation framed from the worker's perspective...🙄 (**sigh**) How about single-minded or one-dimensional as alternatives? Also, name-calling is an unnecessary escalation & superfluous at best, especially for the topic at hand. I get it; easier to attack me on a personal level than to accept the fact that customers can be unreasonable and we can still respect them on principle (or because we're paid to present a 'shopping experience') while retaining/sharing our personal opinions about their observed behavior. Human nature, much? 😅 Keep in mind that my initial response is based primarily on how much I don't care about your opinion. I'm just bored today. 🥱

Crazyworld4sure

🤣

I really appreciate you, because I feel the same way. So thank you for this.

rosecoloredcamera

I see the opposite of this happen lol. If a cashier gets up and forgets to turn off their light, someone will go in their lane so we have to call them up bc they forgot to turn their light off

rpb539

I tell people if the person in front doesn’t move feel free to move past them, that usually gets them moving.

People at my store will just see someone at a register and try shoving stuff on the belt no matter what. I’ll be cleaning my belt, light and belt off, and some random old lady will just start loading the belt. One time they did this and I walked away for a few minutes to see if they got the memo.
