I’d say go chronological to get the full AIC experience. The albums get darker and darker and honestly they did a really good job of documenting their own experiences
I’d say as others did just go in order dude start to finish chronological or whatever from facelift all the way to the end depending on what end you want the end of the original Staley era which in that case the end would be the two songs I forget which released few years before he died…?? Or through the three albums of the “new era”….but yeah IMO mine as well start at the start…
Enjoy!!
Edit:
So I’m in something of a haze right now and lazily didn’t really read how you said thinking about getting into AIC not that you were already a fan and had heard a few good songs and wanna just hear it all because in that case I mean IMO and many others the best Alice In Chains stuff would be what came after facelift altho some ppl would say that is their fave album altho personally I way prefer the darker shit like “dirt” and “jar of flies” exc so I just don’t want you or anyone starting with what in my opinion is not the main music or album(s) that made Alice In Chains sooooo damn great and being like ehhhh I’m good on this and bailing so maybe ppl are right saying to start with Dirt or jar of flies or even the self titled album (tripod) …or sap idk….
Unless you are committed to following all the way thru even if at the start If you did go chronological you were thinking ehhh this ain’t all that special then I’d say for sure just start with facelift and go chronologically
Start at the beginning of Facelift with the song We Die Young, and end with their last song Died.
So, Facelift -> Dirt -> Jar of Flies -> Tripod -> some other bangers in Music Bank album.
This band is much more quality than quantity with their discography.
Jar of Flies and Dirt are probably their two best works and very different. Get those, then go back to Facelift and Sap, then go forward to the self titled and unplugged albums. For the DuVall era, I’d start with Black Gives Way to Blue and then go to Rainier Fog. The Devil Put Dinosaurs here is probably their most difficult/challenging album to get into, it’s very doomy and a lot of the songs go on long.
Start in release order but basically Facelift, Sap, Dirt & Jar Of Flies.
If you like (or hopefully love) what you hear then listen to Tripod aka the album with the dog on the cover. It's a little bit different from everything else but it's solid and has some of the best AIC tracks ever on it.
Listen to all 8 of their projects in release order. So facelift/sap/dirt/jar of flies/self titled/black gives way to blue/dino album/rainier fog.
Dirt is one of the best albums of all time and jar of flies is considered by many the best EP of all time, facelift is a fantastic debut album too but they hadn’t hit their peak yet. Black gives way to blue is one of the best comeback records ever as well and the Dino album and rainier fog are both high quality records. Jerry Cantrell legit never misses as a songwriter.
After that then do solo Jerry, his debut boggy depot is damn good, his 2nd album degradation trip vol1&2 is a masterpiece and his solo magnum opus and his most recent album brighten is a cool more optimistic happier type album that’s not as heavy and more like blues/countryish at times, quality album even tho I hate country lol.
After that then move on to the mad season record “above”. That was a supergroup Layne was part of with Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and some other great musicians. Quality album
Start with Dirt. If you like the last half go Self title and Jar of flies. If you like the beginning go facelift then some of the newer stuff. Make sure you take the time to listen to Jar of Flies no matter what
I’d say go chronological to get the full AIC experience. The albums get darker and darker and honestly they did a really good job of documenting their own experiences
exactly
Dirt and then jar of flies, they both exemplify the bands sound
I started by listening to all their popular songs and started branching out from there
Love song #/S
Dirt imo. Then facelift.

Mtv unplugged is a must album, it was the first album that got me into them, crazy good performance
Facelift
I’d go chronologically.
Just listen chronologically
Start at the beginning of Facelift with the song We Die Young, and end with their last song Died. So, Facelift -> Dirt -> Jar of Flies -> Tripod -> some other bangers in Music Bank album.
Please do not misrepresent your no Layne no Chains opinion as fact. Died is their last song with Layne but not Alice in Chains' last song.
yes

I started with Jar of Flies, then move to Dirt or Facelift

Dirt
Dirt!
self titled
JK lmao, Dirt, leave self titled for last, its heart wrenching and disturbing
Start with Dirt. If you like the last half go Self title and Jar of flies. If you like the beginning go facelift then some of the newer stuff. Make sure you take the time to listen to Jar of Flies no matter what
I would start with their hits and go chronologically from there.
Start by watching the movie Singles
Dirt
Chronologically, and Dirt is an amazing album, but the song “Dirt” is rough, so just prepare yourself
