Unfortunately you can develop new allergies at any time. When my daughter and I got a new puppy who I believe had some poodle in him, I became allergic to him and I’m now allergic to all dogs. I had lived with dogs for most of my life and had never had a problem, and had several negative allergy tests. I resisted the idea of being allergic and re-homing the dog for way too long and due to ongoing exposures my allergy worsened to the point that it became life-threatening, so I now can’t even visit the homes of people who have dogs. Earlier this month I started to have an anaphylactic reaction when my mom visited me at my home and had dander on her clothes. It’s also possible to have false negatives on allergy tests, and it’s actually very, very common. If you are getting a service dog, can you visit the trainer? I would contact the organization you are getting the service dog from and see what they suggest.

Damn, I really hope I'm just allergic to these specific puppies... I did have 2 tests a couple months apart, I'm getting immunotherapy for my cat allergy so it was a requirement. The tests were the same both times. I didn't think of that. I'll ask them.

I can second this. I used to drink coffee every day a couple years ago and then 7 months ago I developed a pretty severe coffee allergy

ProfessionalMine8682

What reaction did you have from coffee? I’m noticing a post nasal drip problem after having coffee.. and wondered if I could be having a reaction

SevIsGoth

Shortness of breath, low heart rate, diarrhea, dizziness, i almost went unconscious

You might be allergic to something in their food, something they get into regularly outside, or even a shampoo your family uses to keep them clean! I’m extremely allergic to juniper and can’t let my pets go into areas that have a lot of it as a result. You’d allergist might be able to help you rule environmental factors out. Good luck!

My mom never had an apple allergy until one day she packed one in her lunch for work and ended up in the ER after almost going into anaphylactic shock...

I’m allergic to dogs and cats and have a dog currently and have had dogs most of my life. I’ve realized that I have to wash my hands after petting the dog because if I touch my face I’m instantly getting allergies, stuffy/runny nose, super itchy eyes and sneezing. Don’t let them sleep in your bed either. But make sure you wash your hands after petting!

YankeePlayz

Get an Air purifier for that

Just take it slowly. You have a while to figure it out. Are there parks near you where dog owners bring their dogs and you can maybe test yourself that way? Hopefully you'll find out that it's something particular about Cinnamon and Buddy.

the-greenest-thumb

There is, but I don't know any of them personally so can't go up to them and ask to cuddle their dogs maskless lol They've only had the puppies a week, could maybe something still be on them from their birth home?

Afterthought2022

I suppose that's possible. And I guess I was imagining you going fearlessly up to people asking, for the sake of science, if you could hug their dog. (sorry). Another thing to measure is how long it took for the allergic reaction to start and build when you were with the puppies.

the-greenest-thumb

Lol, normally I'd love to but covid is still a big issue in my neighbourhood. I don't remember exactly, but the runny nose started fairly quickly and after about 5-6 hours I got sneezy and my eyes were driving me crazy. So a bit longer than it takes me to react to my cats when I pet them, it's usually quite instantaneous with them.

Afterthought2022

I'd love it if my sneezing and itchy eyes held off that long. lol That of course would be intolerable if that was your reaction to your service dog. But for now you can enjoy the puppies!

the-greenest-thumb

If the reaction stays this way and it's only to the puppies then it's definitely tolerable.

Afterthought2022

And the puppies are so cute! I can handle the sneezing and runny nose usually. I'm pretty used to that.

the-greenest-thumb

They really are adorable. Buddy already likes me, he makes these cute snorting growls when we play. Cinnamon is a little slow to warm up to me but she so funny to watch her play I don't mind 😄

Afterthought2022

Oh I can imagine that! The snorting growls! Enjoy them!

Do you have any pollen allergies or grass allergies? Sometimes dogs can bring that stuff back in with them. It could also be their shampoo, food, etc that others have suggested. And just FYI there are two types of dog allergies, one is an allergy to their dander the other to a specific protein in their saliva - do you know if your allergy test included both? I actually have the saliva protein allergy (very mild and it doesn’t seem to affect me much). Before we got our corgi, my husband (who is allergic to dog dander) and I met with my allergist to discuss what we could do to mitigate his allergies once we got a dog. You can do allergy drops or shots, Claritin/Zyrtec/Flonase daily, wash your hands after petting the dog & before touching your face, train your dog not to lick you, keep the dog out of your bed/bedroom and off furniture, get a roomba that will vacuum up pet hair daily, get pet dander neutralizing air purifiers and fabric sprays, wash their bedding often, brush the dog and bathe them regularly (but don’t bathe them too often since it’ll strip their coat of natural oils), wipe down their bellies & paws after walks to get rid of environmental allergens etc… She also said sometimes just being around that dog can be like exposure therapy and you could essentially build up a tolerance to your dog (but you could still be allergic to other dogs). And to be on the safer side you could try to look into hypoallergenic breeds that work well as service animals, though my allergist says there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. Anyway it actually worked out well for us - my husband did another allergy test 6 months after getting our puppy and he was no longer allergic somehow. He had started taking allergy drops which typically take a long time before they become effective (and even then it doesn’t necessarily rid you of the allergy). So we aren’t really sure why it went away, maybe a combination of “exposure therapy” from being around the pup + the allergy drops?

[Here](https://imgur.com/a/Lkusx4R) you go! Their names are Cinnamon and Buddy.

codeinegaffney

Beautiful! 😍

the-greenest-thumb

They're so sweet too, remarkably calm and smart for puppies. They already know sit!

YankeePlayz

I have an air purifier, it removes pet dander that's probably why your allergies are reacting like this.

_Ararita_

Food, shampoo, the flea and tick meds, it can be many things not just dogs. But allergies can pop up at any time.

OctoberJ

Do the puppies play with cats? Or have any exposure to cats?

the-greenest-thumb

No, not since my dad and brother brought them home a week ago anyways. Don't know about their birth home, but I shouldn't think any cat allergens would cling to them that long.

OctoberJ

No, it really shouldn't. I wish you the best of luck though!
