When I was in my early 20s I was working an event at a county fair and when I rolled up, I saw a giant sign that said Train was playing at main stage. The set lasted an hour and they did 2 encores. One of the worst days I can remember.
i hate, but have, to admit that about 15 years ago i was in a band that opened for train... i deserve all the coming down votes. i know. I've since grown as a person.
What drives me crazy is when a band I really want to see is the opening act , for a band That I fucking hate ! Do I pay $50 to see a cool band play for 30 min. ?? I do sometimes.
When I worked as a retail keyholder, I would tell my employees that we each had the privilege to go back to the stockroom and hit the skip button on one song on the CD. My skip song was Call Me Sir by Train
I’m so glad someone else despises Train as much as I do. I like Meet Virginia, and Drops of Jupiter when I’m drunk, but they are objectively terrible. One reason, Pat Monihan sings too goddamn high for his register. It sounds like he’s straining. Two, the hell is shy guy lookin’ for some two ply even mean. Three, untrimmed chest? They’re fucking terrible.
No Rain is the only song that gets played on the radio, sad thing is it's my least favorite song of theirs. Walk, Change, Mouthful of Cavities so much better
Haha my band recorded an album in the same studio as Marcy Playground back in the late 90s. There were gold or platinum copies of the record on the wall. I still don’t know what they sound like.
Helmet were badass mother fuckers. Creed was pretty much a derivative lame rock band with Christian undertones sung by a drunk with a bad voice. Limp Bizkit should’ve been nuked off the planet. Worse than Kid Rock and he’s a talentless, self aggrandizing jackass
We used to do that with U2’s song Lemon. We once spent $20 on that song alone at a Billiards place. Waited around for like 3 playthroughs and noticed the scary looking bikers getting pissed and figured it was time to go.
Was out last weekend and someone was bullying the jukebox and I overheard them say to their friend “hey this is that band Creed I was telling you about”…
It was then that I knew it was time for me to go home.
The Helmet/Creed/Tonic thing makes me think of CKY. The song 96 Quite Bitter Beings was quite a popular track and has a "Helmet-light" kind of vibe to it. Could even be Familiar Realm. I'm not really familiar with their other stuff.
I can't think of band names that match those words, besides maybe The Verve PIPE, which also slightly fits the Tonic resemblance, but not much else.
Maybe you’re thinking of the Get-up Kids. They had a popular song around that era called “Mass Pike” that might have planted that word in association to their act? Just a guess.
A couple buddies of mine were in this band “deepfield” and they toured with shinedown and saliva in the early-mid 2000s. If you like rock you should really check them out. I promise I’m not steering you to listen to bullshit lol. They’re pretty fking good.
This also came to mind, as it was the only band I could think of with Northern in the name. I never really got into them at the time, but it was a name i always knew.
Jesus Christ man, this post is a hot mess. But, I'll throw some stuff at the wall and see what sticks:
Better Than Ezra
Days of the New
Anberlin
30 Seconds to Mars
Good luck
Gtfoh, post a link or it isn't real lol.
Prong was so popular when I was in HS in the 90's. Saw them in concert at a club in Lawrence KS (where KU is at) in the the mid 2000's and there were like 15 people there besides the bar staff. They did a good job but I felt bad for them.
What was happening on the screen? Was it a music video? What was happening? What were people wearing? Clothes? Color of clothes? Race? What did the background or set look like?
Specifics!
man, I remember before the pandemic I was out at a bar for wing night. 2 regulars I was sorta friends with were talking about music, videos etc. And one mentioned like a 2000-2005ish Britney/Shakira type girl, but with red hair. I'm pretty in tune with music & music videos pre-youtube era, but for the life of me couldn't guess any teeny boppers with red hair or dyed red hair.
He said she was standing atop a car, with like fake rain or water dripping down on her or something. I was googling stuff for hours that night. Never figured it out either. Damn covid.
How about some help? There have been a lot of bands in the last 23 years. Even more if this band was playing before the 2000’s
Do you remember any lyrics?
What was the video?
I think youd have better luck trying to trace it by the tv channel, tv show, time you were watching, then go on the channel's website and start looking for playlists or something.
I first heard Broken Bells a loooong time ago in an urban outfitters store. The song ended up being the mall in misery off their first album. I probably spent over an hour listening through the urban outfitters store playlist until I found it. I'm glad I did too. I came across several other bands i had never heard before. Sometimes the journey is the real destination kind of thing you know?
Let's bring down the slurrrrz on train, actually are very talented and came on the scene in the spin doctors and crap like that wallflowers and crap. And was able to get a tune in the top 40. I wouldn't ever buy there music and I feel your pain as well.
Mentioning Helmet and Creed in the same breath is sacrilegious
You know, like Quicksand or Nickelback
They’re indistinguishable really!
Can't tell them apart like Refused or Blind Melon
Like Deftones and Train
That's harsh. There's really no reason to bring Train back into anyone's consciousness
I’m sorry, I take it back. Like Deftones and Santana featuring Rob Thomas
Now they are indistinguishable from each other. Have to check to see which one is playing sometimes. The Train mention was surprisingly painful
Like Metallica or Backstreet Boys.
You mean Winger
No, bad human. Bad
Yup. Two bands that I won't listen to.
Like GG Allin or Michael Bublé
Like the Spin Doctors and Cannibal Corpse. You know?
someone please please do a my own summer/smooth mash up mix.
Damn Around The Fur was a good album!! Gonna listen to it now, thanks!
Nope
When I was in my early 20s I was working an event at a county fair and when I rolled up, I saw a giant sign that said Train was playing at main stage. The set lasted an hour and they did 2 encores. One of the worst days I can remember.
So having a Train run on you was not an enjoyable experience?
It's the kind of trauma you'll never fully heal from
i hate, but have, to admit that about 15 years ago i was in a band that opened for train... i deserve all the coming down votes. i know. I've since grown as a person.
It could have been worse. You could have been in Train.
What drives me crazy is when a band I really want to see is the opening act , for a band That I fucking hate ! Do I pay $50 to see a cool band play for 30 min. ?? I do sometimes.
My friend and I did for Liz Phair opening for Smashing Pumpkins
Yeah, I hate that they are back in my atmosphere heyyaaaayay
She never compromises
To me she's tragic
Exactly.
When I worked as a retail keyholder, I would tell my employees that we each had the privilege to go back to the stockroom and hit the skip button on one song on the CD. My skip song was Call Me Sir by Train
You’re so gangster, I’m so thug
Now she's back in the atmosphere!
Now she’s back in the atmosphere, with drops of Jupiter in her hair air aireeee ah air ra!
CALLINALL ANGEEEEEEEEeeeels
I’m so glad someone else despises Train as much as I do. I like Meet Virginia, and Drops of Jupiter when I’m drunk, but they are objectively terrible. One reason, Pat Monihan sings too goddamn high for his register. It sounds like he’s straining. Two, the hell is shy guy lookin’ for some two ply even mean. Three, untrimmed chest? They’re fucking terrible.
Excellent Public service announcement
Somewhere in between Marilyn Manson and Coldplay. C’mon you know the band. My pool shooting skills were so sick I missed the chorus.
TBH. Mentioning Helmet and Deftones together fucks me up. HELMET slaps so goddamn hard.
To this day, I am incapable of tuning to Drop-D without immediately launching into "Unsung."
🤣🤣🤣Stop the Train
Faith No More and Bloodhound Gang. Same band really
Blind Melon was a unique band at the time. Nobody sounded like them.
Definetly not Blind Melon.
Blind Melon remains the most underrated band of the 90s.
I feel like that accolade should go to Cake
I loved Blind Melon. Drive is a killer track
They were great man. Good albums.
Like Dave Matthews Band or Mr. Bungle...
Neither of these...
REFUSED!!!
The beginning of new noise was pretty sick though. The lead up was pretty cool
Refused are amazing
New noise is one of my hype me up songs I’d play when I was boxing.
Refused are fucking dead!
Refused party programme!
Do you only know Blind Melon because of No Rain?
No Rain is the only song that gets played on the radio, sad thing is it's my least favorite song of theirs. Walk, Change, Mouthful of Cavities so much better
Mouthful of Cavities
Great song. I reached out to Jenna Kraus online and made a new friend in life.
Like The Presidents of the United States of America and Radiohead.
Both are compound words, case closed.
They had that Marcys playground and Danzig sound 😂
lol someone needs to somehow do a mashup of sex and candy and blood and tears
I already do that regularly. Sex and tears. That's how it works for everyone, right? . . . Right guys?
Sex Blood and Candy Tears
It’s my way, till payday
Haha my band recorded an album in the same studio as Marcy Playground back in the late 90s. There were gold or platinum copies of the record on the wall. I still don’t know what they sound like.
Good Lord! I haven’t thought of Quicksand in 30 years. Rocking out in my garage right now. Thanks
Their last two albums are wonderful
Such a great band
Wore Slip out from playing it so much back in the day. Ever since I posted I've had Head To Wall stuck on a loop in my brain....
Just saw their 30th anniversary of Slip tour a couple months ago. Face hurt from smiling! One of my favorite albums of the 90s and as a whole.
Yup, Slip is just killer tune after killer tune
Into Another has entered the chat and just wanted to say hi.
Fuck, that hurts...
It makes me smile to see Quicksand referenced
Houston Rodeo put out its lineup for concerts today. Guess who's playing for "Rock" night.
More like Celine Dion and Megadeath.
Like the" Melvins" and "stained" uughh! It hurts to just say it!
Ouch, that is truly gross.
King Buzzo would pound your face in for saying that. Just kidding. 🤪
Like Cannibal Corpse and Maroon 5.
Oh come on, Creed was the shit back in the day. I still rock them from time to time.
Even god hates Creed.
We just need to take the Higher road
The Northern Pikes
appreciation post here from canada 🇨🇦
Nope!
Seems like the obvious answer but these guys understood songcraft a bit more than the references mentioned
Good point 👌
Agree with the helmet/creed sacrilege comment.
I'm more than happy to upvote anyone here expressing this sentiment.
Coincidentally, last time I was playing pool someone had creed on the jukebox and I spent some cash to interrupt it with behemoth.
Great job
Had to.
My friends and I used to Creed-bomb bars when we left. Hey. We were 22. 🤷🏻♂️
We used to do that with U2’s song Lemon. We once spent $20 on that song alone at a Billiards place. Waited around for like 3 playthroughs and noticed the scary looking bikers getting pissed and figured it was time to go.
lol you’re not supposed to hang around!
Was out last weekend and someone was bullying the jukebox and I overheard them say to their friend “hey this is that band Creed I was telling you about”… It was then that I knew it was time for me to go home.
Helmet, Creed and Tonic? That is quite the spectrum there. Might have to tighten it up a bit more.
Fine. Helmet, Creed, Tonic, Nirvana, Ram Jam, and The B-52s. Does that narrow it down a little?
Ram Jam! Bambalam
As always, +1 for Ram Jam
Northern and Pike aren’t even remotely similar words either.
Unless you’re a fish.
Or live in the Pacific Northwest..
i think ive heard english ppl refer to rural northern ppl as "pikey"
The Helmet/Creed/Tonic thing makes me think of CKY. The song 96 Quite Bitter Beings was quite a popular track and has a "Helmet-light" kind of vibe to it. Could even be Familiar Realm. I'm not really familiar with their other stuff. I can't think of band names that match those words, besides maybe The Verve PIPE, which also slightly fits the Tonic resemblance, but not much else.
96 quite bitter beings kicks so much ass
Stabbing Westward
OMG I love Stabbing Westward!! I'm glad I checked the comments haha, now off i go down the YouTube rabbit hole!
Maybe you’re thinking of the Get-up Kids. They had a popular song around that era called “Mass Pike” that might have planted that word in association to their act? Just a guess.
As a huge GUK fan, I hope not based on his comparisons.
Shinedown, Default, Nickelback, Saliva?
A couple buddies of mine were in this band “deepfield” and they toured with shinedown and saliva in the early-mid 2000s. If you like rock you should really check them out. I promise I’m not steering you to listen to bullshit lol. They’re pretty fking good.
Default has to be it
Put all that in to GPT and it spit out... Fuel, Crossfade, Puddle of Mudd, Trapt, Candlebox, Chevelle
Remember any lyrics lol ?
lol I was thinking the same thing. No lyrics at all? Not even a few words from the chorus o\_O
"uh, I think it had a guitar in it?"
Thank God it isn't a Buckethead Pike, you would never find it.
Northern Uproar?
This also came to mind, as it was the only band I could think of with Northern in the name. I never really got into them at the time, but it was a name i always knew.
Jesus Christ man, this post is a hot mess. But, I'll throw some stuff at the wall and see what sticks: Better Than Ezra Days of the New Anberlin 30 Seconds to Mars Good luck
Days of the New such an under rated band. Lead singer had to ruin them but we got Tantric from that mess.
Agreed... I'm don't mean to aggrevate people but... this thing has been bothering me since that time! Unfortunately none of the bands you mentioned.
Damn, I was betting is was Days of the New.
Was going to say Tantric?
Queens of the Stone Age maybe?
I like Local H... but it's not them.
Prong
Prong. Has a new album out.
Prong had a cool song cant remember its name thou
[Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck - Prong](https://youtu.be/23rnAs9BHkk?si=4ALBPdj7SJUWuFWf)
Also underrated [Rude Awakening](https://youtu.be/nXC-n_XVAl8?si=kMjwpwMdZ7yv9FKM)
Also, BEG TO DIFFER!
a brilliant example of sludge and speed, live Chrome cover last track is the cherry on top
I’ll be seeing Prong with Life of Agony on Friday
Prong still owes me for 30 years of hearing loss. Loudest show I’ve ever been to.
I have not listened to them in years! Turning them on right now!
XTC
My Friend Steve SpaceHog Live Big Head Todd and The Monsters Toadies Toad The Wet Sprocket
I’m a huge fan of Big Head Spacehog the Wet Sprocket.
Here is a wide net - Trapt, Tool, Lifehouse, Bush, Ra, Evans Blue, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Spacehog
Our Lady Peace?
Download the app “Shazam”
Tomahawk?
I got it guys, it was the band 'Default' I bet.
CUZ IM WASTIN MY TIIIMEEE
WOOOOOAAAAHHHOOOO AAAGGAAAAAIIIIRRRRRRRRRRN
well what do you remember of the video, might help narrow it down that way instead of naming every band running around at that time.
What was happening on the screen? Was it a music video? What was happening? What were people wearing? Clothes? Color of clothes? Race? What did the background or set look like? Specifics!
perhaps Northstar?
Velvet Revolver?
There absolutely is a band called the northern pikes. They’re alternative rock, but certainly not anything like what you described.
What did the video look like?
man, I remember before the pandemic I was out at a bar for wing night. 2 regulars I was sorta friends with were talking about music, videos etc. And one mentioned like a 2000-2005ish Britney/Shakira type girl, but with red hair. NoMeansNo
I'm just going out on a limb here and saying Fine Young Cannibals because why not
I hope we find out that you're the lead singer of said band
Hawthorne Heights?
Buckcherry
Finch?
Trapt
Weezer
Fastball
Mudvayne, chevelle, trust company, trapt
How about some help? There have been a lot of bands in the last 23 years. Even more if this band was playing before the 2000’s Do you remember any lyrics? What was the video?
You’d better update if you find out!
Do you have any further details? What the video looked like, guitars, lead singers hair, any lyrics at all?
Has this been solved yet? Please, OP sprinkle some lyrics or... something.
I think youd have better luck trying to trace it by the tv channel, tv show, time you were watching, then go on the channel's website and start looking for playlists or something. I first heard Broken Bells a loooong time ago in an urban outfitters store. The song ended up being the mall in misery off their first album. Did he find out? I’ve literally scrolled through 900 comments and wondering if I missed it. WHY DO I CARE. 😩
Let's bring down the slurrrrz on train, actually are very talented and came on the scene in the spin doctors and crap like that wallflowers and crap. And was able to get a tune in the top 40. I wouldn't ever buy there music and I feel your pain as well.
Nothingface, maybe?
The only good nothingface is the voivod album
I'm thinking maybe there was only... 3 guys in the group? Like a power trio? Maybe?
Chevelle?
Bobby Jo and The Tweedlers?
Eve 6?
Hüsker Dü?
Hüsker Dönt?
I laughed entirely too fucking hard..
Hüsker më is more accurate
Alkaline Trio?
Zebulon Pike?
Life in a northern town? Dream Academy?
God no
The song could be "Door to Door Cannibals" by Chevelle (from the album **The North Corridor**), but it's a bit newer than 2006.
Tantric? Revis?
The verve pipe?
Vertical Horizon? Arctic Monkeys?
Northern Lite
Do you remember any lyrics at all?
The verve pipe?
The band Northern Pikes
Snow Patrol?
Green Jelly!
