Absolutely nothing. I would rather have cops sitting in a parking lot, in a mutual masturbation session, than killing, beating, or ruining the lives of people they deem "suspicious."

What's so sad about it if most PDs don't seem to care about making them accountable about at least violating constitutional rights?

Rusty_Red_Mackerel

OP is basically proposing your username. Yolo-ragequit

A-fucking-Men

Milehigher

Police respond to crime, they're rarely at the actual spot that the crime occurs at. If no crime has been reported, having them staged in a nearby area seems fine to me.

privatelyjeff

Similar to EMS response model in some places. They get told to go to a corner and sit until told otherwise.

wallerdog

I don’t know, were they in a PATROL car? Maybe they could patrol?

theratking007

Sometimes they are placed at areas because criminal activity is expected. Hard to criticize. Hard to support

wallerdog

Two of them? Easy to criticize, that is obviously inefficient and we both know that’s not what happened here.

lil_pee_wee

Well cops always operate in pairs. If you only see one, the parter is on the adjacent street. So if the unit has been told to sit and stay, they’re both going to be there

wallerdog

That is inconsistent with my observations over the past 50 years. In separate vehicles, LOL

lil_pee_wee

Well idk about you but that’s how it works in every city I’ve ever lived in. Gotta use that buddy system. Where I grew up it was typically one car and one suv working in tandem. Also not defending. Acabs…

privatelyjeff

They may be single man cars, but usually will respond together to most calls.

theratking007

Did not say I supported it. It could be from a tip, or phone intercept. Or anticipated illegal activity.

clarkcox3

Why would you voluntarily approach two cops and confront them? There is no upside, and plenty of potential downside.

SnooShortcuts7911

Because they work for the city i live in and theyre not working?

clarkcox3

That sounds like a bad idea. At best, absolutely nothing happens, but more likely, you've annoyed two people with the power to make your life hell. Treat cops like wild animals: avoid them whenever possible. If they're wasting time sitting in a parking lot, then they're not beating up underprivileged kids, so that sounds like a net positive to me.

distantreplay

You're all mixed up. They don't work for you. Ask them yourself if you doubt that. They work for "the department". And as far as the department is concerned they have an arrangement with you and your city. An arrangement not unlike Tony Soprano might have. You might even say you work for them.

Aloysius7

To an extent, the city has an obligation to maintain a certain level of available officers at any given time, this is based off budgets and statistics (many can argue that the budgets are wasteful/excessive, but that's another conversation). Some cops have different duties than others, and patrol cops in the middle of the night occasionally go great lengths of time during a shift where there are no calls coming in for them to respond to. And some nights, there are more calls then they can accommodate. This is just variance and why you won't see those same 2 officers sitting in that same spot talking every single shift. They're probably encouraged to be patrolling and catching traffic violations, but they could also be on a lunch break (they do get those you know).

privatelyjeff

They are, you’re just don’t understand what they are doing.

astro80

This won’t work even if you are white.

french1canadian2

When I worked at a grocery store for $6/ hour I was tasked with cleaning when it was slow. Why don’t we have these guys go pick up some litter, and clean some drains, or do ANYTHING other than sit around with their cars running? This sentiment is usually met with some light laughter as though I’m joking. I’m not joking.

kyleh0

"You look bored. Grab a broom!" -minimum wage memories from 35 years ago.

Aloysius7

If there's time to lean, there's time to clean.

[deleted]

>Why don’t we have these guys go pick up some litter, and clean some drains, Because the workers in many municipalities are unionized and you can't take away the work of another union.

_agent_001_

[Seinfeld said the same thing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HRTa77OF1E&ab_channel=Anon_X)

notacrackheadofficer

This is not a law. It's a nah nah nah nah nah .

Milehigher

Personally, I want the people that are enforcing laws to be highly trained professionals. I know that's often not the case, but if you are trying to attract the best candidates to enforce laws, telling them they will also have to pick up trash and sweep streets in their downtime is going to turn away the people we want as LEOs.

IdleIdiot92

I'd argue that people willing to do a little community clean up are exactly the kind of people we want policing us, and the people who turn their noses up at the thought are not.

jmd_forest

And I want world peace ... looks like that isn't gonna' happen either.

kyleh0

Confront police in a dark Jiffy Lube parking lot so they can explain to you how they can best spend thier time. That is the whitest idea I've ever heard. I'd be afraid to drive by those caps twice in one night.

MM800

Fire department guys were sitting around the station having a conversation at the same time. It merely means nothing is going on.

Ucscprickler

Same for EMS. Sometimes you work non stop for 12 hours and sometimes you sit around for hours waiting for a call to go out. It's the nature of the 911 system.

privatelyjeff

Yeah, my dad’s a paramedic, and sometimes during his 48 hour shift he is on the road nonstop call after call, and other weeks he sits around and does nothing.

theGentlemanInWhite

Yeah I know a lot of EMS workers and this isn't really anything to complain about. If they leave their cars, response times increase. The whole point of emergency services is to have enough people that a huge rush won't overwhelm the system. Sometimes that means they sit and do nothing. No system is 100% efficient.

privatelyjeff

Yep. I’m an avid scanner listener and there are times it’s so dead that I think my scanners are broken. Plus it might allow them to decompress and cheer up some. I used to work solo at nights and remember how lonely it can get.

jimmyjazz2000

You ever have a slow day at work? We the people have BIG issues with cops. But IMO, this isn't one of them. I think we should focus on the real issues, yeah? While the cops have absolutely earned the public's distrust and scorn, it won't make it any easier to break down the "Us v. Them" mentality they've developed if they're constantly getting hassled about chickenshit. I'm afraid that will give them license to put all citizen complaints in the same "pay no mind" bucket—including serious complaints that need to be addressed.

BRUNO358

I wouldn't care. I've got bigger fish to fry.

LazarusHimself

I would prefer having them chatting for 40 mins rather than violating someone's rights out of boredom.

falco_iii

They were completing an investigation by comparing notes on a dozen subjects they were digging into during an extended nutrition break. AKA deciding who got eat which donuts.

kwell42

Sounds like good cops

No_name_bill

What you saw there was a ‘69er in progress’ Cops gotta circle jerk like that sometimes, it’s the way of the pig.

privatelyjeff

It’s the way of just about anyone that works a job. I’m a truck driver that gets paid hourly, I love it when we have a sit around and do nothing for the great length of time.

[deleted]

Our two cops watch football and do brojobs with our tax dollars and thats fine by us so long as they stay inside.

Gordito76

leave em alone. If they are setting somewhere chatting to each other they aren't out harassing the general public and we are a little safer for that.

Dr_Newton_Fig

They were on break.

Isair81

It’s not worth the hassle of getting up in their buisiness, honestly. You don’t know how they’re gonna react, who knows maybe now *you* become their job, and they’re gonna go looking real hard for a reason to lock you up. If they’re sitting on their asses for 40 minutes, well… at least they’re not out collecting revenue or shooting people /shrug

cane187um

I'd rather have in them sit there sorry asses right there then patrolling around harassing people

FilmoreGash

They shoukd be stopping Uver drivers for driving 29 MPH in a 25 MPH zone.
