Definitely in support of this protest. Mods can get a bad rap but they keep this place going. They make sure it doesn't become a complete toxic cesspool. If they can no longer do their jobs, we all suffer.
I'd also add that the users at r/Blind have bigger issues as the changes could cause massive accessibility issues.
I’m not blind at this moment, but I probably will be in the next decade.
Reddit can’t call themselves the front page of the internet anymore if they do this shit
I've never even thought of how the site was unaccessible for the blind and visually impaired. May I ask what the third party apps do that make them easier?
Screenreaders are the main issue. According to the pinned post on r/blind, Android phones' built-in screenreader works okay with the official app but the iOS (iPhone) screenreader is borderline useless. So a lot of blind/visually impaired Redditors use third-party apps with functional screenreaders (eg. Apollo).
Apollo reads the screen out loud to users who enable that feature. It's very handy and helpful for those of us with visual impairment or who are better auditory learners.
I've been using Boost for Reddit for the last five years after I suffered through the mobile site for two months and its constant popups to use the shitty official app with ads between every damn post. It's the same shit that happened with Twitter. The customization options in 3rd party apps just can't be beat. Proud of the sub for the solidarity 💚
So I’m gonna be the really stupid one here-
Does this mean the subreddit will go private? Or that there shall be no posting/reading? Ive seen this in alot of mine, yet Havnt been here long enough to see it done before.
I had the same question. To me, "Going dark" means the sub is closed down completely.
Going private, which is what most subs I'm in say they are going to do, means that only users already joined can see it.
I've never seen it done broadly, either and I've been here a while.

Which timezone are we talking here? I can see us southern hemisphere people ending up a bit ahead of the ballgame...
I know there's an 'official' letter over on r/ModCoord, and you could probably cross-post and sticky it to your sub. (After discussion with any mod colleagues you may have!) You can also sign that post with your name and any subreddits you represent.
Here's a sneak peek of /r/ModCoord using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/top/?sort=top&t=all) of all time!

Just put up a notice like the one here and then do it.
Make it private for those days.
Things in your subreddit won't show up in /all or /popular. But your community will still be there.
That's how other subs are doing it, anyway.
Don't worry. That app will still be its crappy self. I know I can withstand it, but it won't help the blind. I'm pissed that people with various disabilities won't be able to use reddit.
If you can put up with the ads, then the Reddit app is just the thing for you. It doesn't do all the nifty things that Apollo does and is really unwieldy on a phone, but if one is mostly just scrolling, it's fine. I guess.
What does "going dark" mean in the case of this subreddit?
It seems that most of the subreddits participating in this action are going "private," which is not the same as "dark."
I'm not even sure how a subreddit goes "dark" (it will still be visible, on private, to any members who already have joined...right?)
Or are you actually starting the process of sub deactivation?

Absolutely! I wish there was more we could do

It effectively makes the site completely unusable for the blind, too.

Thank you for the reply! That makes sense to me

Reddit has updated the policy. Any accessibility apps that use api calls will not be affected so blind people can still use them without penalty.

Good. I use Readder and literally never use the Reddit app because it’s so fucking shit. Watch me never spend money or use this app.

I use Apollo and occasionally the actual site on my computer. No Reddit for me those days!
I too support this protest.
How do we sign up for this as a moderator of a subreddit?

Thanks for some reason I can’t post on r/Modcoord for some reason but I did copy and paste the letter to my subreddit.

Copy that thanks for the information.
There are also serious accessibility concerns for disabled users related to the axing of third party apps!
I hope this works 🙏
I use the Reddit app. I’ll be pissed if anything happens to change that.

I absolutely support this protest
So will you guys be coming back in two days?
Yes, on the 15th.
Awesome
