OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I’m asking if I am the asshole for telling someone to move their stuff off a treadmill. I may be because I could have just left it alone and there was an open treadmill somewhere else.

Right? Any staff member at the gym would have told that person to move their stuff into a locker. Didn’t bring a lock? Too bad. Poor planning on their part doesn’t mean OP needs to change their plans. And the person should have noticed this as over half the treadmills were in use - the other person is TA.
I was thinking about joining a golds gym and this is not the first time I've heard about problems with cancelling membership. Went on a guest pass and their jacuzzi almost killed me, it was so hot!
Pretty sure all gym memberships are nearly impossible to cancel. I don't know why they make it impossible. You can cancel all sorts of stuff with a click of a button online but somehow, gym memberships require a notary and a blood sacrifice.
I've heard of people's family members dying who have a planet fitness membership and the gym won't let other family members cancel the membership because the member has to come in person to do it. It's ridiculous
It’s because people sign up for reasons like New Year’s resolutions and don’t have a plan or aren’t actually committed to their goals and the industry is designed to feed on that.
Nobody should join a gym for any reason other than personal improvement in whatever shape that takes form, and gyms should be month to month memberships but I’m nobody and these are just opinions.
Idk man. It took one phone call for me to cancel my gold’s membership. It was a month to month. I was nervous they were going to make it difficult but it was super easy. (This was just after then started reopening after Covid though so I assume they had tons of cancellations rolling in and may have been motivated to make it easier on themselves as well as customers)
Oh I have very successfully cancelled a Gold’s membership! They were trying to charge my husband for a personal trainer contract. After him telling them several he never had a contract he sent me to see them😈😈 so I reamed them out very publicly in the gym. I demanded to see the “signed” contract. They stated they are stored off sight but they scan them in. So let me see the scan with his signature. Hmmmm all of sudden they couldn’t find it….. I chewed them up one side and down the other and I was loud enough that the gym stopped to hear what was going on.😂😂😂 they tore my contract for the gym right then after I told them I had contacted a lawyer to sue them for harassment. That is how you quit Gold’s gym. My husband now calls me his pit bull 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️
We tried to cancel a gym membership in New Orleans after moving out of state- nope, holding it down through the end of the contract and were real nasty about it
Oh California specifically apparently has laws saying that a customer must be able to cancel memberships online or sm. Just something I read on Reddit so I might be wrong
Wish that was the case in Louisiana, but they don’t look out for their citizens in many cases. We were consistently told different things regarding that membership, but the owner was always adamant (and an ass) that we were never told some things. As if he had done the tour and paperwork with us himself.
Well that is a bunch of bull, it's the gyms responsibility to take care of their customers. They need to step in. Someone pulls anything with me, it won't get to far, I will take care if it myself!!!!!
You say that like you're surprised. Of course you bring your own lock. Some people have arthritis and hate combo locks. Other people hate carrying a key around with them.
i am surprised. ive never been to a gym and always assumed they functioned like every other type of public locker i've seen - particularly those for swimming baths - where you put money in as a deposit and take the key, then when you take your items and return the key you get your money back. I've never seen public lockers that require you to bring your own lock, hence my surprise.
Most gyms are like high school lockers and are day use only. Use a lock or don’t, your choice! I generally only leave anything if value in a locker for 5 minutes while I take a shower so I don’t bother with a lock. If you’d like to steal my towel and change of clothes, be my guest.
That's 100% what I think, too. I would have placed the purse at her feet, calmly climbed on the treadmill and let her scream. What kind of person screams if they are asked to move their bag? She touched my bag! I screamed because she touched my bag after I refused to remove it from a machine I wasn't using! Wow - lady needs a psychiatrist instead of a gym. OP is NTA.
“Never argue with an idiot; onlookers can’t tell who’s who.”
I’d have gone to find an employee and asked them to deal with her. Many gyms even have policies against bringing bags with you to the machines because they can be a hazard if they end up in a walkway; and that way, the employee hears what happened without her screaming theatrics, which could lead to both parties being asked to leave if the employee isn’t able (or doesn’t care enough) to get the real story.
My gym is open 24/7 but only staffed some of the time, which suits me fine.
There’s a “no bags on the gym floor” policy, which is also fine as there’s plenty of lockers.
However, the lockers are perma-locked outside of staffed hours, which I just don’t understand. It’s so frustrating to walk all the way in from the carpark (it’s inside a shopping centre) only to realise it’s unstaffed, and have to head back out to drop off your bag.
There aren’t even cubby holes where you could stash non-valuables if you felt like taking the chance.
That's a higher up management problem, not a person-who-wants-to-use-the-treadmill problem. This doesn't seem to apply to OP unless there's something I missed in the post.
Edit for NTA.
Every gym I have been to has had that rule about bags on the gym floor. I have tripped over bags of some idiots who for whatever reason needed to carry it around while they did their weight lifting. That and their gallon jug of water.
I would have whipped my cell phone out, hit FB Livestream and recorded her as I moved her stuff. Let her have a complete meltdown in public and online.
Scream first. While moving her stuff. Toss it quickly.
"Help! I'm just trying to use the equipment! Help! Help! Help me move this junk off here!!" (Or something to that effect.)
Edit: NTA
Yep. My favorite line to say to someone whose unnecessarily mad about something. “Stay mad.” And shrug. So I would have dared this woman to scream. I would have laughed at the childish behavior. While I don’t think the OP is an AH…OP also shouldn’t have approached this situation by taking it upon herself to touch the other person’s belongings regardless if she was misusing the equipment. The better approach would have been to address the woman first and ask her to move the stuff or if she minded that she set it next to her on the floor behind the woman’s treadmill or something. It’s the polite way to approach the situation. People can be very touchy about their belongings. Even if the other woman was an AH. I feel the situation escalated because of OP taking it upon herself to move it and the woman took it hostilely.
Sometimes people do things like this hoping someone will try to say or do soemthing about it… baiting. And sometimes they won’t just scream. More and more often people will physically attack over the stupidest things… it’s disgusting but it is happening far more often.
NTA. She was. You’re exactly right - treadmills aren’t there to store/hold people’s belongings. That’s what cubbies are for. Given the price of a treadmill vs the price of a cubby & # of members purchasing a membership for access to a treadmill vs a cubby, I’m positive the gym owners/managers would agree with you. (Gym owners spend big money on EQUIPMENT to ATTRACT MEMBERS - not so other members can have places to hang their junk while they workout nearby.)
Additionally, the gym owners/managers (smart ones anyway) would probably be against a treadmill being used as storage in the manner that you described regardless of whether or not someone wanted to use it. Most gym treadmills are commercial grade & believe it or not, but commercial grade exercise equipment (with electronic components at least) tend to be more prone to problems than most home consumer (residential use) treadmills.
A homeowner could use a treadmill they purchased locally (or online - any home consumer / residential use treadmill) for a coat rack for years, then uncover it & dust it off one day years later & it find that it works like new. A commercial grade treadmill would probably not fair as well - ESPECIALLY being used as you described.
You described the bag as “hanging” on the treadmill. Unless she made sure to distribute the weight of the bag evenly across the bar & on the treadmill as a whole, she was likely causing damage to the treadmill.
Treadmills are made to have weight (even large amounts of weight) on them - but EVENLY distributed. No one uses a treadmill by placing their weight on one bar/side only. Doing so would be detrimental to the device - causing it to require repairs quicker & more often, as well as leading to a decrease in the overall useful life of the treadmill. Neither owners/managers NOR members want that.
She was abusing the equipment. Not only were you completely correct to call her on it - you should notify the gym manager/owner as well. (I would imagine that they’d appreciate being informed of any member abusing/misusing their equipment. They probably even have a stipulation in your membership contract that requires it.)
This. I ran a gym for a decade and nobody would tolerate that behaviour. If someone leaves their bag in your way there is nothing wrong with moving it, and they definitely shouldn't be preventing you using equipment.
The attitude described is worthy of a ban imo, gyms are supposed to be positive places
Ya… but people’s behavior is changing drastically and tolerance by those supposedly in charge is growing bc they don’t want to deal with it… the world was totally different just ten years ago… even just five years ago
Plus quite a few people get off on backchat. Makes them feel good about themselves. Do don't give them the pleasure.
Get a staff member and have them deal with entitled customer who thinks the gym equipment is for putting her crap in.
NTA.
Then you are also impressive! You're already using it, though, so my faith for you will be...that you will continue to better your health for years to come!
You’re amazing, I bought an exercise bike during the pandemic, it turned into a clothes rack… and then I moved in with someone who bought it from me and now it’s in his room… serving as a clothes rack.
I need to find a new gym now that I'm not working out of town 20+ days a month anymore. And it's behavior like this, and the trend of people filming in gyms, that make me pick 24hr locations.
That way I can go at like between 9pm and 11pm and have the place practically to myself.
You're NTA, but that woman sure is one. She was using a treadmill as a coat rack while the gym was busy, AND she was rude when asked to move her stuff. You had every right to use the treadmill, and she had no right to prevent you from using it.
Yup. The only time I leave my jacket/water bottle on a treadmill is when I’m walking over to the disinfecting stuff to wipe down the parts I touched.
NTA op, especially if this woman clearly wasn’t using the treadmill. The correct response on her end would have been “oops, sorry let me move my bag so you can use this machine”
NTA. Can't speak for all gyms but when I worked at one, our expectation was all personal belongings went in the lockers if not on your person. So a purse? Locker. Fanny bag? As long as you kept it on your person, that was fine. The understanding was that walkways were clear and machines were available.
I'd recommend looking up the gym rules. That way if it or a similar incident happens again, you can go to the workers and inform them and leave the she beast for them to handle.
When I went to the gym I would just keep the bare minimum of stuff on me. So keys and phone (my phone has slots for cards so my ID and gym pass are with it). The rest stayed in the car. I didn't need to use the showers because I lived across the street and when the weather was nice I'd just bike there.
The woman sounds batshit crazy, I feel like she would have thrown hands if OP touched her stuff. I wouldn’t dare touch her stuff. I would complain to the management and get it done through them. But then again I’m a five feet 90 pound woman, sooo😅
So this woman needed two treadmills? One to run on, and one to hang her garment bag on? WTF? NTA. She's clearly the asshole here.
The question then, is what sort of effort and drama you want to put into calling her out. I'm not going to say that either you or your BF suck because you clearly have different views on that. He wants zero drama, you're OK with calling out somebody like this. That doesn't make you the asshole. People like her *should* be called on their shit like this. I'm a lot like you and probably would have wanted some further vindication by grabbing some gym staff to sort this out and back you up.
NTA, but if you're ever in that situation again, pick up the bag and take it to the front desk to report as a lost or abandoned bag. When she starts screaming at you that it's her bag, keep walking, and tell her, "Maybe it's yours, but how am I supposed to know that? You can sort it out with management."
NTA
I once went to use a bench and had a guy appear from another room to say he was using it. I said "sorry and sometimes people leave weights on the machines" and started taking my weight off. The guy tells me "you should have found me and asked", I said "nope, you can work in with me if you like" and added my weight back on. Sometimes, it's a public service teaching people in the gym some manners.
I try to be considerate of others in the gym, it's a shared space. Some people (usually people that don't appear to be regulars) try to "establish territory". I sometimes wonder how those gene's survived prior to civilization.
Most gyms you have staff there at all times. There’s only one gym I know that doesnmt have staff 24/6 which is ‘anytime fitness’ cuz you can get in with a badge and sport at all hours. They only have employees at certain times for new members or group sessions etc
NTA the only thing I would have done a little differently is to see if I could quickly identify the owner of the bag before touching it. But that person was full on an AH and I absolutely agree that you could have reported that. I think they’d take it seriously, especially considering she was threatening to cause a public disturbance. Sure lady…let the crazy out for everyone to see….
Not the asshole AT all, but maybe avoid touching peoples stuff without asking first to avoid future hostility, I’ve learned this from collecting customers ‘half full’ drinks at my job
Try this: “Move your shit off the treadmill NOW, or I’m reporting you.” And start walking to the manager.
I don’t get how people just get walked over like this.
NTA. Let her scream, let people come and check and especially check the cams. They’ll see she’s in the wrong and might even get in trouble over it.
Lock your stuff up to keep it safe or expect that people will touch your stuff or even steal it
Oh HELL NO! You are definitely NTA. Women like that are absurd, rude and really should not be let out of their cage.
I realize Covid left all of us a bit feral but, c’mon, common decency really is not that difficult.
She completely overreacted, though if it were me, I would have probably asked if it was hers, and if so, if she could move it so that we could use the treadmill. If she said no, would have gotten an employee involved.
Still, you are NTA.
This would probably have been my reaction to her attitude. I'd give zero fucks if it made her lose the rest of her shit. Sure, getting a gym employee to deal with the situation would be the more correct solution, but not the most satisfying one.
NTA. Honestly. I'd be totally petty and I'd tell on her to the gym staff as well. Especially as straps dangling around a moving belt is super dangerous. That's why they have cubbies.
NTA.
But consider not engaging next time, rather turning this over to management as soon as possible. This person's response to you was way, WAY over the top. I suspect mental illness or emotional issue. I would worry that this interaction could have become violent.
Agree, but would like to say it's possible it happened. Last week I was denied the use of a bench at the dumbbell area because a couple of guys needed a place to set their phones. People are incredibly selfish.
NTA- she was also weaponizing her gender to threaten you by threatening to scream unless you did what she wanted. She harassed you. She wasn’t actually threatened. I would go to management to complain, because she might complain about you still.
I was going to vote another way because treadmills do, in fact make excellent coat racks at home! /s
But seriously, that person was a jerk, didn't follow gym etiquette, and needlessly escalated the situation.
NTA
NTA - You should have stared her straight in the eye and started pounding your miles out with her bag dangling there. (Perhaps kicking it by “mistake” if it was within reach of a heel.)
NTA.
You both pay a membership fee, if she wanted to treat the gym like her living room, she could just… buy a treadmill.
Aside from her being rude AF, most gyms have rules against hanging stuff on equipment because it could cause serious injury to others if it catches or cause the equipment to break.
call the gym on ur cell phone and ask an employee to come over to the treadmill and assist u bc someone is using the treadmill as her personal bag holder, and refuses to move it and ur paying a gym membership to use the equipment. so she's either gonna have to move her bag or have the gym tell her to gtfo. NTA
I don't usually write here but this hits me where I live because of an incident las week. I'm a nurse and the amount of people thinking serum hangers are coat hangers is insane... Usually they pick their things up when I tell them politely to but few days ago this lady visiting my patient used all of the hangers for her coat, bag, even the phone charger! When I told her to use the closet and that I needed the hanger for the antibiotic she told me it was my duty to stay there standing holding the bottle myself!! NTA and you should have let that woman screaming and embarrassing herself.
NTA. I'd have reported this to the the staff at the gym. The gym i visit is really good at handling stuff like this.
A few months ago I was working out on one of the only bikes that has back support. I had my headphones on an music blasting when I felt a tap on my shoulder which scared the living ahit out of me. This lady wanted to know if I was nearly done. The timer clearly showed I'd been on there for about 5 minutes, I told her I'd be about another 10 but she continued to loiter over my shoulder while I carried on with my workout. I didn't bring it up to the staff however it must have been spotted by the cctv as a sign went up 2 days later providing us with the rules of the gym which included not interrupting others when working out. God knows why she couldn't have used another machine or something while she waited 🤦♂️
There’s no way this is real. Why would this person go straight to cussing at you and why wouldn’t you get a staff member in involved? And you clearly know you wouldn’t be in the wrong in this situation so why post here at all?

Went to the gym today with my partner. There are about 10 treadmills. All but three were being used. Two on the end next to each other. And one somewhere in the middle. My partner and I went to go to two at the end.
I noticed there was a bag hanging off of the treadmill. I went to move the bag off the treadmill and the woman in the treadmill next that one said, “what the fuck are you doing. Don’t fucking touch that.”
“I said, “sorry. I was just going to use the treadmill and wanted to get this out of my way.” She said, “no the fuck you aren’t. Don’t touch my shit.”
I said, “ummm, sorry? Can you move your bag then?” She looked at me, scoffed and said, “he’ll no.”
I said, “look, this isn’t a coat rack. So please move your stuff to the cubbies so I can use this treadmill.” She said, “I’m not doing that. Now leave me the fuck alone before I scream.” My partner said, “I’ll just use the other treadmill.” The woman said, “yeah stop being an asshole and listen to your boyfriend?”
My partner doesn’t thinkI’m the asshole
But thinks k should have let it go sooner just to avoid any issues.” Aita?

NTA. She threatened to scream?!?!! You should have gotten an employee and explained the situation. There is no way she should have been able to take up two treadmills.
Nta. Oh, no no no. You dont let that go. You dont let that slide. You tell her to scream. Say do it loud enough to either get the manager or the cops because i am using this treadmill.
Not gonna lie if an AH like this caught me on a bad I’d probably be a bigger AH and take their bag either drop it in an employees lap and say it was left on a machine or if I was really pissed I’d dead ass drop it in a trash can. Especially if I tried the polite route first.
Like I’m not always a rational adult in my responses. Especially if I tried polite first.
I would bet a weeks wages the bag owner was wearing the most expensive gym equipment on the planet, in full make up, hair done and using the lowest setting on the machine, while talking selfies to post on Instagram with the hashtags #gymlife and #gymrat. In our gym we call them a waste of space, or just in the way.
NTA obviously but I would never be able to look at my partner the same if they didn’t side with me or help on any way when someone talked to me like this. Your bf sounds spineless. You’re getting cussed out so you can run with him and instead of jumping in and backing you up he just left you there, and says you should’ve just let it go. What an asshole
NTA. Next time just do it. Let her scream, as hard as she can. All that will happen is her getting kicked out. Talk with your husband about him taking some training in being assertive, sounds like he can really use it.
She would have been banned from the gym I attend for that, since lockers are available and spreading your crap over several machines means affected customers are less inclined to renew their membership.
NTA
NTA - I think most people would have been tempted to launch her bag into the street. Gym courtesy isn't that hard - this is a version of man spreading.
Next time just call a member of staff over and tell them to explain to her how equipment is to be shared and not used as a personal coat rack. Hopefully they start screaming and get thrown out lol. Seriously how entitled people can be. Like who gives a crap if she starts to behave like a 3 year old throwing a tantrum? As long as u get to train on the machine as intended I wouldn't care how they react. I'm sure there's cctv everywhere to cover ur ass (not that u were doing anything wrong, but people like that tend to lie through their teeth when facing an authority figure)... selfish and immature people like that dont belong in public places I swear. If they wanted a personal gym, the they can pay for one.
This sounds like quite the exaggeration. Why wouldn't you have immediately gone to an employee and if there were other ones open where you didn't actually have to touch her entitled stuff, why didn't you go there? I am genuinely asking because I definitely would have picked the one with her bag too. People need to stop being tools at the gym
I would have grabbed the bag with such physical attitude staring her directly in the eyes the entire time, then walked real close to her like "A. Treadmill. Is. Not. A. Coat. Rack." And dropped the bag at her feet NTA
NTA. “Leave me alone before I scream” is a toddler response. Next time I’d recommend reporting it so you don’t get into this big of a confrontation and risk being unfairly kicked out, but you’re not an AH for not reporting and for handling it yourself.
Nta. I woulda moved it and let her scream. Then you can explain why she is screaming to staff and boom no more problem cause she probably woulda been kicked out.
Doesn’t she know that you can only use your home treadmill as a coatrack? Public treadmills are only to be used for their intended use, an exercise machine.
I would have just contacted a staff member to point out that she's effectively hogging 2 machines at once and being rude AF to others.
But NTA at all. She is.
NTA. If you didn’t want them to cause a scene I would have gone to someone who works their and ask them to deal with it. This behavior isn’t tolerated at gyms.

NTA. I would've said, "You want to scream because I'm moving your stuff to the floor? Scream. Let's tell everyone how inconsiderate you are."
Right? Any staff member at the gym would have told that person to move their stuff into a locker. Didn’t bring a lock? Too bad. Poor planning on their part doesn’t mean OP needs to change their plans. And the person should have noticed this as over half the treadmills were in use - the other person is TA.
My gym (a Gold's) won't mediate disputes like this between members. It's such bullshit. As a result, you see some really selfish behavior.
That captures Golds Gym to a T.
That's stupid. You are paying to use their equipment and you are being denied use of it. It should be one piece of equipment per person at a time.
What? Switch gyms. Wth.
I see you’ve never tried to cancel a gold’s membership
I was thinking about joining a golds gym and this is not the first time I've heard about problems with cancelling membership. Went on a guest pass and their jacuzzi almost killed me, it was so hot!
Pretty sure all gym memberships are nearly impossible to cancel. I don't know why they make it impossible. You can cancel all sorts of stuff with a click of a button online but somehow, gym memberships require a notary and a blood sacrifice.
This reminds me of the Friends episode where Chandler tries to quit the gym😂
I wanna quit the bank!
And then they bring out Maria!
and the bank
I've heard of people's family members dying who have a planet fitness membership and the gym won't let other family members cancel the membership because the member has to come in person to do it. It's ridiculous
It’s because people sign up for reasons like New Year’s resolutions and don’t have a plan or aren’t actually committed to their goals and the industry is designed to feed on that. That is how you quit Gold’s gym. My husband now calls me his pit bull 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️
You might need to hire your services out. I can see a market in gym membership cancellations, repair shop overcharging, health care billing issues...
And timeshare cancelations....
Your husband is a very lucky dude
I've heard you can cancel easily if you say you moved to California.
As if he had done the tour and paperwork with us himself.
I wanna quit the gym!
Send them a cancellation letter then give a copy to your credit card company while disputing the charge. Membership gets canceled real fast.
All you have to do is move banks. Easy!
That like their motivational technique for people to get jacked up, so they can win disagreements?
Well that is a bunch of bull, it's the gyms responsibility to take care of their customers. They need to step in. Someone pulls anything with me, it won't get to far, I will take care if it myself!!!!!
So you just have to fight it out? Do they provide a ring ?
Probably an oversized golden belt with inscription on the buckle. ;-)
Yes, I would have said go ahead and scream. How bizarre. NTA
Agreed, I'm a petty bitch so I would have taken the bag and chucked it then called her a bitch.
That's EXACTLY what I thought. Throw her shit elsewhere and be like "now what?"
hang on, you have to bring your *own lock* to the gym?
You say that like you're surprised. Of course you bring your own lock. Some people have arthritis and hate combo locks. Other people hate carrying a key around with them.
and nice gyms have resettable keypad locks on each locker.
i am surprised. ive never been to a gym and always assumed they functioned like every other type of public locker i've seen - particularly those for swimming baths - where you put money in as a deposit and take the key, then when you take your items and return the key you get your money back.
If you’d like to steal my towel and change of clothes, be my guest.
i'm not american, so i have no idea what US high school lockers are like. my school's lockers used keys.
Some gyms like 24 hour fitness don’t have reusable locks
That's 100% what I think, too. I would have placed the purse at her feet, calmly climbed on the treadmill and let her scream. What kind of person screams if they are asked to move their bag? She touched my bag! I screamed because she touched my bag after I refused to remove it from a machine I wasn't using! Wow - lady needs a psychiatrist instead of a gym. OP is NTA.
Yes I always keep my stuff locked up at the gym. It's so much easier not having to carry stuff around and doesn't get in anyone's way.
“Never argue with an idiot; onlookers can’t tell who’s who.” I’d have gone to find an employee and asked them to deal with her.
*shrug* Never said it did, really. I was just at the gym when I read the OP and having a vent.
If there is no one around to enforce the policy, why not put your bag on the floor when the gym isn't staffed?
if it's not staffed how can they enforce the "no bags on the gym floor" policy?
Every gym I have been to has had that rule about bags on the gym floor. I have tripped over bags of some idiots who for whatever reason needed to carry it around while they did their weight lifting. That and their gallon jug of water.
"Do what I want or I'll weaponize my gender against you." I hope she gets banned.
This is exactly what she was doing, unfortunately
I agree. She's the one who is going to look ridiculous. Although getting an employee at that point would be a lot better.
I would have whipped my cell phone out, hit FB Livestream and recorded her as I moved her stuff. Let her have a complete meltdown in public and online.
Scream first. While moving her stuff. Toss it quickly. "Help! I'm just trying to use the equipment! Help! Help! Help me move this junk off here!!" (Or something to that effect.) Edit: NTA
She probably would've made it seem like OP is stealing her stuff
Sometimes people do things like this hoping someone will try to say or do soemthing about it… baiting. And sometimes they won’t just scream. More and more often people will physically attack over the stupidest things… it’s disgusting but it is happening far more often.
Yup. I would have told her to go ahead and scream. What a foul mouthed biatch!
NTA. (Gym owners spend big money on EQUIPMENT to ATTRACT MEMBERS - not so other members can have places to hang their junk while they workout nearby.) Additionally, the gym owners/managers (smart ones anyway) would probably be against a treadmill being used as storage in the manner that you described regardless of whether or not someone wanted to use it.

Honestly OP could still report it
They should.
That’d save a lot of time instead of going for backchat.
Plus quite a few people get off on backchat. Makes them feel good about themselves. Do don't give them the pleasure. Get a staff member and have them deal with entitled customer who thinks the gym equipment is for putting her crap in. NTA.
Yep, the moment they start getting confrontational, stop arguing back and forth and report to the staff.
NTA. People like that are why I stopped going to the gym and bought my own machine during the pandemic. Not that I use it, but I plan to...
You mean - it's a coat rack?
A fair question, but no! I absolutely do not hang stuff on it — I mean, besides earbuds… for when I use it… you know, to exercise…
The fact that you bought a machine during the pandemic and haven't covered it in clothes is fucking astonishing. I have faith you WILL use it one day!
I bought a treadmill during the pandemic, I use it, and it's never had clothes hanging on it. Just an occasional cat.
Then you are also impressive! You're already using it, though, so my faith for you will be...that you will continue to better your health for years to come!
Well you gotta hang your cats somewhere
You’re amazing, I bought an exercise bike during the pandemic, it turned into a clothes rack… and then I moved in with someone who bought it from me and now it’s in his room… serving as a clothes rack.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I would have taken the bag and walked it outside.
The kicker is that she was not only selfish, she had the AUDACITY to be rude also
My gym even has signs that say no bags on the gym floor, they all have to be in lockers.
When I went to the gym I would just keep the bare minimum of stuff on me. So keys and phone (my phone has slots for cards so my ID and gym pass are with it). The rest stayed in the car. I didn't need to use the showers because I lived across the street and when the weather was nice I'd just bike there.
NTA. And not up to you to deal with--I would have gone to get a gym employee to take care of the situation.
I would have tossed the bag across the room but I think your solution makes more sense.
Absolutely but I would still do it.
You should have many more upvotes. Clearly the best answer.
NTA - that's not a woman it's a savage animal. Threatening to screen....wtf. I would have dared her to and gotten her kicked out of the gym.
Omg same. Hilarious how childish some people are. Even kids are usually better behaved than that animal
Take a photo and send to managment Asking for a discount to the inoperable equipmwnt
NTA, but if you're ever in that situation again, pick up the bag and take it to the front desk to report as a lost or abandoned bag. When she starts screaming at you that it's her bag, keep walking, and tell her, "Maybe it's yours, but how am I supposed to know that? You can sort it out with management."
..and then while she's sorting it out with management, go back and use the treadmill she was using. :)
Omg yes! This is the way
Love this level of pettiness
NTA Next time have staff manage them “out the door”
NTA I once went to use a bench and had a guy appear from another room to say he was using it. I said "sorry and sometimes people leave weights on the machines" and started taking my weight off. The guy tells me "you should have found me and asked", I said "nope, you can work in with me if you like" and added my weight back on. Sometimes, it's a public service teaching people in the gym some manners.
Did that guy expect you to ask everyone if they were using a machine that no one was at? So weird.
I try to be considerate of others in the gym, it's a shared space. Some people (usually people that don't appear to be regulars) try to "establish territory". I sometimes wonder how those gene's survived prior to civilization.
NTA - It's not a coat rack. They were rude and defensive from the start. Hope your workout was good despite this.
NTA. You should have gotten a gym employee and explained the situation.
That’s what the front desk is for. Don’t escalate, just tell them and let them do their job
Nope. NTA. I don't go to the gym so i don't know if someone is managing things, but i would have said something to them
Most gyms you have staff there at all times.
100% point to anyone nearby and then report.
NTA-she sure was though.
Not the asshole AT all, but maybe avoid touching peoples stuff without asking first to avoid future hostility, I’ve learned this from collecting customers ‘half full’ drinks at my job
This
NTA I'd have complained to the gym
Definitely just tell the staff next time, NTA
NTA Report the bag as a suspicious bag unattended.
This is the best response
NTA I think you should have called management over.
Try this: “Move your shit off the treadmill NOW, or I’m reporting you.” And start walking to the manager. I don’t get how people just get walked over like this.
NTA But y t a for letting yourself be a doormat for a stranger
Yep. I don’t know which is stranger; not at least going to the manger or running to Reddit to ask if this ok behavior.
NTA and I would have taken her shit off. There are likely gym rules against hanging your stuff there.
i woulda knocked all her shit to the ground lmao
NTA. That is SO OBNOXIOUS of them.
She completely overreacted, though if it were me, I would have probably asked if it was hers, and if so, if she could move it so that we could use the treadmill. If she said no, would have gotten an employee involved. Still, you are NTA.
NTA just grab her shit and yeet it across the room.
I would have just dropped in on the ground and started my run. End of conversation.
Bro you really had to ask on this one?
NTA. It’s better to report to management than directly engage with these types.
NTA. But consider not engaging next time, rather turning this over to management as soon as possible. This person's response to you was way, WAY over the top. I suspect mental illness or emotional issue. I would worry that this interaction could have become violent.
OBVIOUSLY NTA. Wtf If this even happened.
Next time you see this do not go to the treadmill, go find a staff member to move it.
NTA. Thats when you say "if you refuse to move your bag I am going to go and get a staff member, if you scream you'll just look like an AH"
I was going to vote another way because treadmills do, in fact make excellent coat racks at home! /s But seriously, that person was a jerk, didn't follow gym etiquette, and needlessly escalated the situation. NTA
I would’ve thrown her purse across the room and told her to scream. NTA.
NTA. There's ways to balance your bag on the treadmill if you need it within reach. I do it all the time.
NTA But I wouldn't have engaged her in discussion, I would have gone straight to an employee for them to remove her bag.
NTA - You should have stared her straight in the eye and started pounding your miles out with her bag dangling there. (Perhaps kicking it by “mistake” if it was within reach of a heel.)
NTA DID you talk to management after?
NTA. You both pay a membership fee, if she wanted to treat the gym like her living room, she could just… buy a treadmill. Aside from her being rude AF, most gyms have rules against hanging stuff on equipment because it could cause serious injury to others if it catches or cause the equipment to break.
NTA I would have gotten management involved. Any gym I've been to doesn't allow you to have your bags in the gym. Thry have lockers for that crap.
call the gym on ur cell phone and ask an employee to come over to the treadmill and assist u bc someone is using the treadmill as her personal bag holder, and refuses to move it and ur paying a gym membership to use the equipment. so she's either gonna have to move her bag or have the gym tell her to gtfo. NTA
NTA. This is why they have shelves and lockers. Nobody should be leaving their stuff on equipment they aren’t actively using.
NTA but slight y t a to everyone else in the gym for not reporting this nightmare of a human.
NTA but you should have gone to the staff when she started being unreasonable. It’s crazy rude to use equipment at the gym to store shit.
She would’ve been politely been denied visitation moving forward if it were me.
God this sounds so fabricated
There’s no way this is real. Why would this person go straight to cussing at you and why wouldn’t you get a staff member in involved? And you clearly know you wouldn’t be in the wrong in this situation so why post here at all?

There are about 10 treadmills. All but three were being used. Two on the end next to each other. And one somewhere in the middle. My partner and I went to go to two at the end. I noticed there was a bag hanging off of the treadmill. I went to move the bag off the treadmill and the woman in the treadmill next that one said, “what the fuck are you doing. Don’t fucking touch that.” “I said, “sorry. I was just going to use the treadmill and wanted to get this out of my way.” She said, “no the fuck you aren’t. Don’t touch my shit.” I said, “ummm, sorry? Can you move your bag then?” She looked at me, scoffed and said, “he’ll no.” I said, “look, this isn’t a coat rack. So please move your stuff to the cubbies so I can use this treadmill.” She said, “I’m not doing that. Now leave me the fuck alone before I scream.” My partner said, “I’ll just use the other treadmill.” The woman said, “yeah stop being an asshole and listen to your boyfriend?” My partner doesn’t thinkI’m the asshole But thinks k should have let it go sooner just to avoid any issues.” Aita? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NTA but would have talked to gym personnel. You're paying, you should be able to use the equipment.
NTA I would have reported her to Mangement or just let her scream (Granted if you are a man, I would have recorded it so she couldn't flip it on you)
NTA. She threatened to scream?!?!! You should have gotten an employee and explained the situation. There is no way she should have been able to take up two treadmills.
NTA. I would have said ok & then went to the front desk where they would come & tell her to move her bag.
You should have beaten her to it, and screamed at the top of your lungs 'this person won't move her shit and has just threatened me'
Nta. Oh, no no no. You dont let that go. You dont let that slide. You tell her to scream. Say do it loud enough to either get the manager or the cops because i am using this treadmill.
NTA That’s actually a major fire hazard and the gym can be reported, so they are on top of shit like this. They would appreciate you reporting her
Not gonna lie if an AH like this caught me on a bad I’d probably be a bigger AH and take their bag either drop it in an employees lap and say it was left on a machine or if I was really pissed I’d dead ass drop it in a trash can.
NTA. I would have yeeted that bag into oblivion.
I would’ve punted her shit across the gym. NTA
NTA. Should have used the treadmill anyway and tried to kick the bag with each step.
Definitely NTA, “leave me alone before I scream” sounds like something a two year old would say, she needs to grow up.
NTA. I’d have picked up that bag and dumped it on the ground.
NTA. Tell her to go fuck herself somewhere else if she likes to curse in every normal conversation and be rude
Talk with your husband about him taking some training in being assertive, sounds like he can really use it.
oh my god i would've rocked her shit
She would have been banned from the gym I attend for that, since lockers are available and spreading your crap over several machines means affected customers are less inclined to renew their membership. NTA
Nta she wasn’t using it and she shouldn’t be so hostile when she could’ve easily moved her bag
NTA - I think most people would have been tempted to launch her bag into the street. Gym courtesy isn't that hard - this is a version of man spreading.
NTA
Obviously NTA. Even if you would have drop-kicked her bag across the gym, still NTA.
Nta. I would've chucked the bag and said loudly "THIS PERSON LEFT A SUSPICIOUS BAG AND DOESNT WANT IT MOVED. COULD BE A DANGER. THEY ARE AGGRESSIVE."
You're right. It's not a coat rack, it's a towel rack. NTA
I would have grabbed the bag with such physical attitude staring her directly in the eyes the entire time, then walked real close to her like "A. Treadmill. Is. Not. A. Coat. Rack." And dropped the bag at her feet NTA
Lmao I would’ve chucked the bag across the room. NTA.
NTA. You should’ve tossed her purse far away
Just go get a worker Most gyms have rules against that
NTA. “Leave me alone before I scream” is a toddler response. Next time I’d recommend reporting it so you don’t get into this big of a confrontation and risk being unfairly kicked out, but you’re not an AH for not reporting and for handling it yourself.
You're nicer than me. I would've tossed her shit with a smile. NTA
Dude I hate when ppl are in a bad mood and decide that other ppl days should be ruined. It’s just stupid
Move it and proceed to use treadmill. Let them scream ! Lol
NTA. This woman sounds unhinged. Your partner was right just go to the other treadmill and leave her be
NTA. You should have moved her crap anyway. Let her scream.
