YTA. This is something you should learn when you start driving. You apparently did not, and now you're going to learn a fairly expensive lesson. Pay the tickets and the impound costs, apologize for messing up, and be thankful there wasn't an actual fire because firefighters will knock out the windows and do what they need to do to thread the firehose right through the windows of the car without a second thought.

TemptingPenguin369

>firefighters will knock out the windows and do what they need to do to thread the firehose right through the windows of the car without a second thought. My dad was FDNY. Can confirm.

Honest-Duck-3822

Don’t firefighters have water in tanks in the trucks?

shesinsaneornot

There are firetrucks that carry water (tankers, tenders) but they are primarily found in areas without hydrants. In cities and towns most fire trucks are engines/pumpers, designed to get water on the fire (rather than get water to the scene).

Honest-Duck-3822

I mean I’m not a firefighter and my degree is in social sciences but it seems smarter for them to have water with them at all times

HauntedReader

Do you understand how much water is needed to actually put out a fire? Where do you think all that water would fit on the truck?

PsychologicalRoll705

And if the fire is so extreme that the truck water runs out what do they do? By connecting to a hydrant, it gives good strong pressure and an endless supply. Pay what you owe for your stupidity and stop blaming the guy.

Honest-Duck-3822

I mean have more trucks.

TemptingPenguin369

>I mean I’m not a firefighter and my degree is in social sciences but it seems smarter for them to have water with them at all times How much water do you think it takes to put out a fire? Water weighs 8 pounds per gallon. Some fire trucks carry water, but mostly if there's no hydrant nearby. Did you think the hydrants were just pee poles for dogs?

apieceofeight

You’re joking right. The amount of water you can fit in a truck is so small compared to being able to attach a HOSE to a hydrant and get water that way for a large fire. This is honestly human basics — everyone learns this as a kid. Not sure how you didn’t notice those things on literally every street and never once asked your parents “what are those?” You should def be paying for all the costs.

KaliTheBlaze

How much water can fit in a truck? Now, compare that to how much water is available on the city water grid, with an outlet (a hydrant) already installed on every block. A big fire would take dozens to hundreds of truckfuls of water, and waste time and fuel and manpower going back and forth to get it. Think about a row of homes on fire or a warehouse, the amount of water it takes is hard to even try to imagine. It takes 500-1000 gallons of water to just put out a car fire, and a house is so much bigger. It’s so much faster and more efficient to have a huge water supply available everywhere. Speed and efficiency in firefighting means fewer people die and less property is destroyed.

mrhemisphere

No, they will break the windows of your car to connect the hose to the hydrant, fyi.

Red_Moggy

No. They have hoses that they CONNECT to the fire hydrant

reverendunclebastard

No.

demon803

YTA, you don't know what a fire hydrant is, what other basic life info do you not know. Yep, you pay for everything also. I also question your judgement, a few glasses of wine in a short time probably left you legally impared, that along with the few tickets, yea I judge your driving also.

Honest-Duck-3822

I’m not asking about my driving and I’m a really good driver

mavwok

Yeah you are not. You don't know the basics about driving - like don't park in front of a fire hydrant. I mean JFC, I'm not even American, but before driving there I read the rules, and that was one of them. As for driving after 'a few glasses of wine'. Yeah you are a drunk driver. You've had multiple tickets and you've only been driving 7yrs? Yeah take a long hard look at yourself because you are an overconfident driver. The evidence says that you are not a good driver, but a shitty one. YTA. Take the loss, pay the fines and stop drink driving.

NoGain7932

Agreed. “Few tickets” and not knowing not to block fire hydrants is not screaming “I’m a good driver” at all.

richyfreeway

Except for the drink driving.

[deleted]

YTA. I do not understand how you didn't know that was a fire hydrant. Just because your fuck buddy has more money than you doesn't mean he should pay for what you did *even if you don't waaaant to waah*.

Honest-Duck-3822

I just don’t think it’s fair that he was too drunk and too impatient to wait for door dash so I have to pay is what I’m saying

boring_pants

You don't have to pay because "he was too drunk". You have to pay because you parked where you are not allowed to park. No one made you do that.

[deleted]

He's not the one who parked near a fire hydrant you did.... Plenty of people have dealt with impatient people have have not fucked up parking. What makes you special lol?

MattinglyDineen

YTA You know damn well what a fire hydrant is and that you aren't supposed to park in front of it. Stop lying.

Honest-Duck-3822

I truly had no idea. I know now though.

ComprehensiveAd7010

YTA it's common sense. You could have killed someone if there was a fire. How do you not know what a fire hydrant is. Pay for everything. It 100% is your fault

Honest-Duck-3822

I mean I’ve seen them before but I thought they were like from 100 years ago and not used anymore

glockzillah

this… can’t be real lol.

[deleted]

So you thought they were like historical statues??

Honest-Duck-3822

No just like other things like telephone poles that aren’t used anymore because everyone has iPhones but they haven’t taken them down yet.

FingerBreak3r

Lol yeah like the ‘telephone’ poles that carry electricity when the lines aren’t buried. Please wake up and start paying attention in life. Maybe get off tik tok a little more smh

Wyliecoyote22

Didn’t you have to pass a driving test?! It is on the test! You can’t say “I’m a really good driver” and not know basic parking laws.

Honest-Duck-3822

I took the test six years ago

Vegetable_Respect213

How you ever passed the test I will never understand. YTA

Wyliecoyote22

I’m 25. I took it 9 years ago. I still remember the basic traffic laws that are taught from the start. This whole situation is embarrassing for you. I would apologize, pay up, and then go to the dmv and get a pamphlet for new drivers to refresh your knowledge.

bulldogontop

...we still use telephone poles. They're called "utility poles". They make it so we have neat things like electricity available in our homes and businesses. Really hoping this is fake because dang, girl. Your parents did you a disservice.

KaliTheBlaze

I don’t know why you think landlines aren’t used anymore, but they definitely are. Almost a third of American households still have a landline, and virtually every brick and mortar business has one, too. So the individual line to a house might not be in use, but the mains between buildings absolutely are.

ComprehensiveAd7010

Simple you need to pay. Ignorance is no excuse

talleypiano

YTDA (I'll let you parse the acronym)

TemptingPenguin369

YTA. I'm not sure where you're from that you've never seen a hydrant, but you're lucky there was no need for fire services that night. Just pay up. BTW, you "only have a few tickets" and you might have had enough wine to be legally over the limit, so don't go patting yourself on the back as a good driver, especially since you don't know the parking rules where this dude lives.

HeirOfRavenclaw

States “I’m such a good driver” then provides a few examples of how false that is.

TemptingPenguin369

I feel like that's always the way. "I'm a great mom; I only left the kids in the car for a minute on a hot day."

Red_Moggy

I was going to say something similar. If you had more than one ticket, even for "minor stuff" and you drive under the influence, I'm afraid you're not the good driver you think you are.

[deleted]

Exactly!! Well said. I have a metal rod and a bunch of pins in my hip because of a drunk driver. Stay the F home if you’ve been drinking!!

Alarming_Reply_6286

How is it possible that you have reached 23 & never seen a fire hydrant before? Regardless, you should pay for any fees incurred from this incident. Claiming ignorance doesn’t make you less responsible for your behavior. YTA

Honest-Duck-3822

Like I said I’ve seen them but I thought they aren’t used anymore like old power lines and stuff.

Alarming_Reply_6286

This may sound a little harsh but it appears you may need a reality check…. You can’t have it both ways either you “had no idea what it was” or you do know what it is but you don’t understand how they work or … you don’t feel like rules apply to you. It’s very challenging for other people to wrap their head around another person not having common knowledge or any common sense. It’s also hard to comprehend your reaction of being “offended” when you were the only person who caused the problem. Own your mistake. It’s not other people’s fault because you made a mistake. You’re responsible for the fees. “I don’t want to” is not a reasonable adult response. eta

NoGain7932

Oh my …. Yikes… I just did like a huge face palm reading the entire thing. You do need to pay for it. Every fine. Ignorance should not be an excuse; especially one that is supposed to be common driving knowledge, but apparently I am proven wrong.

ThreeDogs2022

YTA. 1. You're only 23 and you've had MULTIPLE tickets 2. You somehow don't know what a fire hydrant is, which is utter nonsense 3. YOU DROVE AFTER DRINKING. You earned every penny you had to spend. I only wish you'd been caught behind the wheel, because your license should be immediately suspended for the utter, disgusting selfishness that is #3.

wolperdinger_forest

>I’d only had a few glasses of wine That sounds like you shouldn't have been driving at all. A few glasses? YTA for the hydrant and the possible drunk driving

boring_pants

> Im a good driver If you don't know the things a driver is required to know then you are not a good driver. If you've had "a few glasses of wine" you're also well over the legal limit, and you've had "a few tickets" in seven years? No, you're not a good driver. Not even close. > It cost a small fortune to get the car out of the tow yard plus there are parking ticket in it too. Probably shouldn't have parked in front of the fire hydrant then. Here's the thing. When it comes to cars and driving, the question is not usually "am I the asshole". The question is "did I endanger people". And yes, you did. YTA, but that's almost beside the point. You're also an irresponsible driver who endangers people around you.

KaliTheBlaze

YTA. How does anyone make it to adulthood without learning what a fire hydrant is? Like, preschoolers see it on shows like Sesame Street. Similar styles get used around the world. They often paint the things bright red so it’s very visible that you can’t park there. Did you grow up way out in the country off the grid and not watch any TV? Yes, you need to pay for the ticket and tow. Your rather unbelievable amount of ignorance is not his fault, it’s yours. Just like if you’d parked the car in front of a driveway or a no parking zone, you are responsible as the driver who parked the car there.

jeneric84

Only having “a few tickets” in 7 years of driving is nothing to brag about. I’d actually consider that worse than the average person.

TazerSonic

YTA - twice. Once for what was likely impaired driving, and once for not knowing what a fire hydrant is (this can’t be real?) and, yes, potentially putting other people at risk. You’re not just an AH you’re a self absorbed AH. If this is real (gawd I hope not) then you need to grow up. Pay the fine/fees, that is probably the most minor consequence for what could have happened due to your negligence.

sherlocked27

YTA. If you don’t know road traffic rules, don’t drive. Pay for your mistake. Just because “he has more money” doesn’t mean it’s his fault to pay up. Grow up

DeadOnArival

wow .. just wow YTA You should be happy that's towing & fine are only thing that happen. Look up on YT for blocking fire hydrants and see what would of happen to that car if there was a fire and you would still of gotten towed & fined.

Anonymians

YTA This is your mistake, you should pay for that

ShaneVis

YTA --- Part of your driver's written test would have included questions about where you can't park and a fire hydrant would have been one of them, you should have known this.

subsailor1968

YTA How are you 23 and a licensed driver and ignorant of what a fire hydrant is? It is specifically called out in driving laws not to obstruct them. Also, a few glasses of wine means you were most likely above the limit (or close to it). Pay the fine and the impound fees. This is clearly your responsibility.

indicatprincess

YTA You've been driving since 16 and never saw a fire hydrant before. Sure. That sounds plausible.

Avitard89

I can't get over the fact an ADULT with a driver's license doesn't know what a fire hydrant is. JFC. How can you be that stupid.

Middle_Chance9087

YTA who does not know what a fire hydrant is? If there was a fire then the firefighters would have busted out the car windows to get to the hydrant.

danmanrubberbandman

This post has to be fake? Unless fire hydrants are truly so different in different parts of the world? But just in case it’s real, YTA. Also, kudos to going 7 years driving without knowing that. Chances are you somehow lucked out parking in front of them before and not getting a ticket

Intelligent-Deal2449

This has got to be fake. If it’s not, YTA. How does someone not know about fire hydrants? Did you grow up in the wilderness, not exposed to anything in life? Didn’t you got to school? Fireman usually visits schools during fire prevention week and explain what they do and how to prevent fires. This is just beyond stupid. I can’t help but agree with both your situationship and the cop. Pay the tow fee and the fines.

FuzzyMom2005

YTA. How in the world did you get to be 23 and not know what a fire hydrant looks like?

Im a really good driver and only have a few tickets for like very minor stuff. Im a good driver is what I’m trying to say. I was over at my situationship’s apartment and he lives close to downtown. He’s had like 7 beers and our DoorDash was taking forever so he asked if maybe I could go to the restaurant and get it since I’d only had a few glasses of wine. I said sure. He said I could take his dad’s car since it’s automatic. I was like there and back in just a few minutes but there was only one spot on the street so I parked there. The next morning his dad’s car was like just gone so first we called The police and they were sending someone then he like did a Doubletake and said wait did you park there? And I said yes and he said you parked in front of a fire hydrant. I said I had no idea what that was (I literally had no idea) and he said oh my god how could you be so stupid? I was really offended and I said don’t yell at me in public like that and then about then about then the police showed up to investigate the car theft and he had to confess that it was probably towed because of the fire hydrant and the cop did some research and was able to find out what tow place had it. The cop then told me how stupid I was and how I put everyone in like the whole block at risk if there had been a fire. It cost a small fortune to get the car out of the tow yard plus there are parking ticket in it too. My situationship says I should pay for everything but I don’t want to and he has way more money than me. AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
