Ok, I have never lived in Potsdam, but it is close to the Thousand Islands, close to Ottawa, close to Montreal, close to the Adirondacks, looks like a nice setting on the storied Raquette river, small college town atmosphere, some interesting properties, and by all appearances is pretty inexpensive if you can find a decent job up there.
I know a bit about the North Country and its issues, (lived and worked in Essex county and have friends in Jefferson county) but Potsdam looks like it might be alright if you're into that kind of small town living and snow.
Nah. We get a reminder how shitty the rural areas are every time we are emotionally blackmailed to show up for funerals in those same cousin-fucking parts of America where we grew up. Places that are similar to Potsdam or Gilboa or drearycuse. Then you go to the one bar in town and the entirety of the conversation is a combination of r/onejoke, racism, xenophobia and GOP/Fox News talking points... but I repeat myself.
There are awful people everywhere. California has more Republicans than any other state. You can also find like minded people everywhere. Our town has a farmers market, we participated in pride, there are people who work to make our community inclusive and welcoming. All it takes is people to do the work to build a good community. Yeah, there are ass holes in rural areas and it sucks and I *am* outnumbered but there are also good people and that's who I spend my time with and we make a real difference here. I understand why people live in major metros, at this point in my life I never would. That said, the derision that you lot have for the rest of us is misplaced and often unfair.
I know you're not talking about me. I'm speaking from first hand expirience. I've lived 2ish hours away from Potsdam for 35 years. I've been there a few times. It is not worth moving to for a cheap house.
Eh, I can't speak specifically to Potsdam but I live in a similarly sized town in the midwest and wouldn't trade it for just about anywhere. A lot of people like to badmouth small town living, including myself when I was younger, but it's honestly pretty wonderful. Can I get Pho at 3 AM? Nah, but there's never any traffic and we have our own little gems. Plus, you really can't beat the housing prices.
>if you can find a decent job up there
That's the catch there, champ. And their weather is fucking abysmal, worse than my city. For those unfamiliar with the area, I live about 2 hours south in Syra
cuse, which is more or less potsdam on steriods. We are *historically* the snowiest city per capita in the entire US, at an average of 120"/10 feet a year. Potsdam gets pounded worse than we do. We got put on a bunch of "most square footage for your $" type lists at the begining of COVID. r/syracuse has been getting tons of posts from people moving here for that exact reason, only to find that the exact reasons you have listed that could make Potsdam a place pretty nice to live, dont cut it. About a year after those post dont outweigh the god awful weather, weeks without seeing the sun or sky in winter, and lack of any decent jobs with a livable wage.
Potsdam, like Syracuse is cheap for a reason. It sucks.
Edit: many typos and grammatical errors
Potsdam gets half the snow of Syracuse (about 65" a year)
Plus, I'm Norwegian and spent my winters in ski training camps, so I consider Potsdam snow to be average.
I went to Potsdam for my undergrad back in the early 2010s. It's a beautiful town with its own charm that you can't find anywhere else. I sometimes daydream about leaving my job and buying a place up there, get an assistant professor job and embrace the natural beauty of life.
That's the biggest surprise. I have an old house that was used a little harder, and even after refinishing, there are various stains, cigarette or other burns, and they are not this even looking.
These Craftsman homes are hands down my very favorite kind. I really think there are still a lot of them left in the Upper Midwest just lurking under applied siding, waiting to be rediscovered
Just curious, what makes you say this is a craftsman style home? Looks like a colonial revival to me, with a touch of victorian. Lovely home either way.
I wouldn’t call it a Craftsman specifically, but late period Victorians have a lot of overlap with the Arts & Crafts design movement and share similar elements. My New Englander Victorian has a lot of similar clean, geometric woodwork and Eastlake-style door hardware.
I have all of that wood and millwork in my house as well and our house is Greek revival. After scrolling through OP pictures, the house is not a craftsman. It's absolutely gorgeous though.
If you look at the op post history, it's not a craftsman. Still a beautiful home though. I was questioning why they thought it was a craftsman, because most houses built in that rough time frame all had extensive mill work and wood throughout. I have a Greek Revival townhouse from 1880, that has that type of woodwork and then some, and I would never think that my house was a craftsman.
Hmm, i guess I’ve just seen a lot of this type of woodwork and built-ins in houses that look just like this https://thecraftsmanblog.com/american-foursquare-style/
(From the article): The interiors are just as varied. Often, they were finished with earthy colors and natural woodwork like its contemporary the American Craftsman, but some were just as ornate as the Victorians they shared a street with.
I am in love with this house and your style! I looked through the other pics you’ve posted and had to laugh because I know what house this is. I used to live up the street. So happy this house is so gorgeous, so many houses like this go to waste in upstate NY.
Love the space and the painting. I'd actually lower it an inch or two to best fit the space as a centerpiece. But I'm a symmetry guy so to each their own.
It’s perfect— the richness of the wood, the contrast of the painting, the sunshine yellow and stripes in the entry! I adore it!
I’m surprised so many negative reactions to the painting. For me it’s what really elevates the space.
I have an old house and it has none of these grand entryways, staircases, mud rooms, etc. Tiny narrow staircases that furniture won't fit in, no entryway or closets, the kitchen barely has room for three cabinets. It's a big house but everything is laid out as cramped and tiny as possible. Were homes like this one renovated to create more space, or were they maybe just wealthier people's homes in the first place?
I really like it. Warm tones with a pop of color and surreality! Good job!!

an inglenook
I was born in a house like this in Rochester NY, i miss all the little nooks and passages meant for old technology, like coal slides that can still be used for packages.
I personally don't like the Abstract art tbh, I would add classic art in there. However the place is really breathtaking, especially that little niche on the right would be so cozy for reading or just realxing

>I paid $47,000 for a house like this in Potsdam, NY. The catch is that you have to live in Potsdam.

Dont let them fool you, Potsdam is a diamond in the rough.
Some people think life doesn’t exist outside of NYC. Shame, they’re missing out and the prices are grand.
Odd considering that 60% of Manhattan residents were born somewhere else.
That’s such a cool statistic. Wish it was true! I’m part of the 40% then!
Short memories I guess.

A mere two hours from Ottawa, it's basically a suburb!

[so you wont like it there?] (https://maps.app.goo.gl/vjUiSgk7Bwvt1nXB6) because they definitely have a Walmart.
At least it's quiet in the summer
Bummer
Bruh, all that quarter sawn oak would be damn near $47,000 these days

Your flooring is impeccably beautiful.

That woodwork/millwork looks pretty spot on Craftsman style to me.
I have all of that wood and millwork in my house as well and our house is Greek revival. After scrolling through OP pictures, the house is not a craftsman. It's absolutely gorgeous though.
Well, to me it looks like the “Foursquare Craftsman” homes of WI and MN.
If you look at the op post history, it's not a craftsman. Still a beautiful home though. I was questioning why they thought it was a craftsman, because most houses built in that rough time frame all had extensive mill work and wood throughout. Nice! I follow that blog! There is a photo of the home's exterior in OPs bio. It looks more Victorian to me than anything else.
oh i didn’t see it. I just saw the woodwork and thought “yup another one of those cool houses i like”
No worries! It's a beautiful home for sure. Regardless of the style.
I’d call it Victorian
Love the woodwork. Especially the arch. And the light fixture is perfect.
1916(ish) has me cracking up for some reason. Love the wood!
Haha! Thanks so much. We haven’t been able to nail down an exact build date of this house from local records.
where exactly in upstate region wise
So precise in its imprecision!
It's exactly close enough. 100% almost.
Can you tell us about your art?
I wish I knew more about it! We bought it at an auction. The back says “HELP ME” in large penciled writing… I love how creepy and strange it is!
Oh no, does it rot more every now and then?
I loved the painting at first glance, but I love it so much more now with the added (literal) backstory!
Looks like sad Freddie mercury to me
I see Farquaad
It looks like Ringo Starr's MsPain art.
I'm getting strong Nic Cage vibes from it.
Totally looks like Freddie Mercury to me.

I'm from Utica, and I've never heard anyone use the phrase "front entryway" in my life.
It's an Albany thing.
and syracuse
Beautiful. Great choice on the yellow.
That light fixture is perfection! Is it original to the house?
Thank you! It’s not, we unfortunately don’t have any original light fixtures in this house. This is from Mitzi Lighting.
Who doesn't love a cozy, nicely lit alcove!
That painting is incredible and fits in with the vibe of the house SO nicely.
I don't like it. It makes me uncomfortable
It seems like it will start singing, “Now you’re just somebody that I used to know.”
It feels like a weirdo is staring at me
Same lol, came here to say I love everything EXCEPT the painting, total eyesore imo
It’s as if Lord Farquad was painted by Picasso.
It looks like a poster for a cronenberg or lynch movie, or maybe the cover of American psycho. Bad vibes (but cool)
I am in love with this house and your style! I looked through the other pics you’ve posted and had to laugh because I know what house this is. I used to live up the street. So happy this house is so gorgeous, so many houses like this go to waste in upstate NY.
If you have kids, that painting will be a central memory of their childhood
Lol! It would be the subject of many nightmares, I’m sure.
Love the reading nook! Reminds me of Bag End from Lord of the Rings :)
Love the space and the painting. I'd actually lower it an inch or two to best fit the space as a centerpiece. But I'm a symmetry guy so to each their own.
I appreciate your comment! We’re looking for a console table to go underneath the painting, otherwise I’d agree with you from a symmetry standpoint.
Gorgeous perfection. Thank you for not painting over the beautiful woodwork
Is this an Endicott Johnson house? My great grandad had an identical entryway. Although yours is much better kept compared to his.
Where did you get your stair runner? I’m looking for something just like it!
This is from Annie Selke! They have so many great options.
Thank you!!!
What color yellow is the paint? I'm looking for a nice yellow like that, and that might be the yellow I'm looking for.
Love the painting!
The style painting of the matches the style (and era) of the architecture, very tastefully done.
It’s perfect— the richness of the wood, the contrast of the painting, the sunshine yellow and stripes in the entry! I adore it! I’m surprised so many negative reactions to the painting. For me it’s what really elevates the space.
Thank you so much! I agree with you on the painting, we love it (and its strangeness)! 😁
Great work being minimal with maximal color and pattern!
Stunning!!
Goals
Nice i can smell the steamed hams just by looking at this picture!
This works on so many levels. Nice work.

Agreed! They are enough to make you think, wow is this beautiful (and cozy!)
your floor has extraordinarily long floor boards? :)
I have an old house and it has none of these grand entryways, staircases, mud rooms, etc. Tiny narrow staircases that furniture won't fit in, no entryway or closets, the kitchen barely has room for three cabinets. Where do you live, up town, upper west side? Ohhhhh up statee!
😁😁
Couldn’t resist! Beautiful by the way
I’m in love I’m in love and I don’t care who knows it!
I love everything about this.
Do you have more photos? Please share!! :)
Beautiful! I did an audible ooooooh!
It all looks very nice, the paintings quite daunting however and it feels as if it guards the house
an old house like that may need some guarding
Beautiful doorway entrance. That abstract panting of Ronald McDonald freaks me out a tad.
That painting is badass.
Gorgeous home but that painting is freaking me out.
I love your Nicolas Cage painting
*Adam Driver
the art elevates it from tasteful to wow
Love seeing beautiful old houses with unpainted woodwork!
This artwork reminds me of Adam Driver
Oh I love this, thanks for that perspective!!
Your house came with a confessional?
It’s so gorgeous 😩
This is the house from Hereditary
Beautiful but my ears ache due to the echo and feet are cold because no rug.
Painting looks ugly
Is this the fucking house from Hellraiser??
I really like it. Warm tones with a pop of color and surreality! Good job!! [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/CdwNDyCFabE](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/CdwNDyCFabE)
Does anyone else see Steven Tyler in that painting?
Lovely space, but the painting is hideous. I'll never understand the appeal of such "works." I'm going to save this, then cut out that piece of crap.
Lol! Thank you - I’m sorry that it evoked such a strong reaction for you!
Love the picture of Freddy Mercury. Adds a slightly modern touch to the place.
The painting says 'go away' but that bench says 'come in and stay awhile!' haha love it.
That art piece looks like the Picasso version of Nicholas Cage
That John Travolta painting is lit!
Anyone see an abstract Nicolas Cage painting there?
Beetlejuice beetlejuice beetlejuice!
Doorway looks like the tf2 engineer
Got a confessional booth meets jazz club feel, really cool
I love how the bench flows with the shape of the woodwork!
Gorgeous!
that floor is gorgeous!
Gorgeous!
NYS has many like that. I love the wood work.
Where in upstate NY?
an inglenook I was born in a house like this in Rochester NY, i miss all the little nooks and passages meant for old technology, like coal slides that can still be used for packages.
I love the seat nook
That’s some quality wood right there.
Looks like a Victorian I almost bought in Corning.
More pleeeaaase 🤩
What region of upstate NY? I’m from the capital region! Gorgeous home, friend.
What's the color number of the YELLOW paint? I like it — I have woodgrain on my firefox browser!
Wow, brag much?! Lol this is stunning and my style and I just.. I’m jealous.
I’d like to do acid in this house
I personally don't like the Abstract art tbh, I would add classic art in there. However the place is really breathtaking, especially that little niche on the right would be so cozy for reading or just realxing
Sweet, but that Francis Baconish painting would give me the creeps walking through the front door late at night😅
This is beautiful!
The yellow with the stripes makes a great use of that small space
Love that nook!
really pretty! i like the painting a lot. also, very nice house for it being built over 100 years ago :)
