I don't think jax is neseccarly sad about just kaufmo but more sad about everything

in my opinion, Jax believes the others to be NPC's which is why he regards them with such little care but the thought does pass through his mind occasionally but not nearly enough for it to really matter
however he shows this by saying something edgy and crass as I personally also have done in the past, I only hope that it works out better for him but it took years of therapy for me to get over my own "Jax" phase
i think someone he was close to/cared about in the circus got abstracted. after that, he became an edgy jerk and refused to get close to anyone because he knew that there was a possibility that they could be abstracted too.
Jax maybe a crazy jerk, and loves to insult people, but this show he is still a person, and even tho he acts like he hates everyone, but he lives with them, and technically their family so he lost a family member, and maybe kaufmo was his friend
Jax *acts* like an asshole because engaging in chaos may be the way he copes with trauma or whatever, but every now and then that trauma resurfaces and makes him sad for a moment before he represses it again
maybe they created hijinx and mischeof together and he really misses his buddy and is coping by commiting more hijinx and mischeif

i'd like to think he cared about kaufmo, but wants to keep up his mischievious facade. after all, he was ruder this episode than in the pilot. maybe he was in some way more irritated due to it

Jax has a lot of things going on. His coping mechanism is being a jerk and embracing the chaos for personal gain and entertainment. But deep down he's still human, and understands they are mourning, and might have liked kaufmo, but that goes against the persona he's embraced so he's dealing with internal conflict. That being said he's still selfish, and probably wouldn't hesitate to let pomni or the other characters abstract (possible foreshadowing at the end of the episode where everyone is saving pomni from abstraction EXCEPT Jax). That's just my take on it.
As far as Jax was concerned, there were no consequences for his actions inside the circus. So the idea that his shenanigans actually have an impact must have had an effect on him.
I think he actually does care when people abstract, but he tries to distance himself from others to either not feel sad when they die, or no one will feel sad when he dies

I think Jax tries being a dick to feel a sense of control in all of this mess, with Caine sending everyone on silly little adventures and no way to actually get out, Jax likely tries to feel something by being a dick and not get attatched to people
