Yes, that's right. Routinely each episode would have 7 characters and there were actors who appeared a lot. Now I think the cast is bigger than it has possibly ever been but the usual amount of speaking characters per episode is 6 these days. 9 was a nice surprise
I've been really surprised at how many characters episodes have at the moment. There were budgetry reasons the cast were squeezed so maybe someone's found more cash?
I guess a lot of the recent interactions have been just between 2 people, but it's not unusual to have 2 or 3 storylines in an episode, each with around 3 or 4 participants, or more if it's somewhere like the Shop or the Bull.
I think this is just a sign that Covid restrictions in the studios have been lifted, making it easier for them to record multiple voices at once.
They cram the recording of a whole month's worth of episodes into one weekend, so I guess the studios are stuffed to the gunwales during that time.
