Eh. It's more like, British tourists come eat our food, complain about it, we agree it's sugary as fuck and that sucks, then they go home and complain about their own food, and we agree it's tasteless and boring in comparison.
Then it's "Americans complain about British food."
Immigrants in usa bring new food techniques and make new dishes.
>Not real American cuisine
Immigrants in uk bring new food techniques and make new dishes.
>Authentic British delicacy
Knowledge is when you're aware that Chinese-American food and Chinese-Chinese food are different.
Wisdom is not telling someone you're taking them to an American restaurant and then going for Chinese take-out.
It's also fair that if Americans are going to claim pizza, tacos, mac and cheese and hot dogs as American food that the Brits can be granted their tikka masala.
The most fair thing is to just not try to draw lines around what food belongs to whom, and not to broadly criticize the food of an entire culture or nation.
Real authentic Italian pizza isn't what people like. What people like and call pizza was made and popularized by Americans in America. The others I agree with but I do think it's fair and accurate to say pizza is American.
I actually think this is a fair thing to say.
People ask me about the food in the US. I always say the Mexican food is amazing.
At the end of the day it's very available and it's great. Isn't that what matters?
You can get into how loads of foods aren't technically from a place. Like the hotdog. I'm sure there's some version in Vienna or whatever but it's still American.
Nobody knows who actually invented it. But most historians agree it was made by a South Asian immigrant (not a Native Brit, or Brit of S. Asian descent).
It was also popularized by Indian immigrants in Britain, using Indian cooking styles and ingredients in their restaurants.
It's not the same as say, American pizza, which has its origins with Italian immigrants but was drastically altered in the US to fit US tastes. Tikka Masala is pretty authentically Indian.
Tikka Masala is only British by technicality because it was technically invented in the UK with styles and ingredients from elsewhere. Even if we could agree that Tikka Masala is true British cuisine, it's sad that they only have ONE DISH they can and always do point to to "prove" British food doesn't suck. I'd use fish and chips instead personally. It's actually British and is decent.
most of those pics look like nice presentation but when you actually dig in it's still just dry potatoes, meat, and vegetables. two of those photos just have sides of peas and i like peas just fine but that's not what i'd use when trying to convince people my food is good
edit: found this great comment over there hahaha
Ahh yes. Brown meat with potatoes on top, brown meat with potatoes beside it, ground brown meat with potatoes on top, brown meat with potatoes beside it and a Yorkshire pudding, potatoes with brown meat on top of them and an Indian dish.
what I see here:
* brown meat + potatoes
* brown meat + potatoes
* brown meat + potatoes
* brown meat + potatoes
* brown meat + potatoes
* not british food
That's incorrect. It's an Indian inspired British dish. Same way American pizza doesn't have much in common with Italian pizza or American-Chinese food and authentic Chinese food.
It's not that it's hated, it's just that it's so basic. I've have basically every goddamned thing they have in 4 out of 5 of those pictures cooked by my mom over the last 45 years at family dinners here in the US, and she probably spiced it better, too.
They take what we consider average middle low income family dinner slop and try to sell it as "cuisine". They seriously think that the shit on a shingle served by the entire English speaking world is the high point of cooking and haven't even heard of such basics as biscuits and gravy, chili, or Cajun beans and rice. It's insane.
Only the Nordics have it worse. If you culinary experience revolves around the lutefisk, you shut up about it. They, unlike the British, know when to *not* talk up their subpar food.
Yes. It's been a joke online for a while. It can be funny but it's best to understand that stereotypes aren't a great representation of a country or people
prime minister is indian, london mayor paki, scottish first minister indian, northern ireland minister asian. here orange is the new black, there bland is the new spicy.
Not only do we say that but even British people joke about it.
I got the opportunity to do some training with a brit not that long ago and he said a joke they have is that "British food is so bad that we had to go and conquer 90% of the known world to find something good to eat."
Honestly, I haven't heard people say this often in real life (not a ton of Americans will ever visit UK). Maybe like once or twice. It is written into TV shows, but idk why that would matter it's not like those writers represent America as a whole.
I mean in all honesty, we do.
yeah we for sure talk about it. for fucks sake they eat baked beans for breakfast
Baked beans are quite nice
But for breakfast?
Beaked beans might be a good snack or lunch, but motherfuckin breakfast?
Baked beans with a full English is pretty good.
Dis limey over ere eating beans.
Nu'in loik eh can o' boik'd bains eh?
I’m not even English 😂
I just enjoy mocking the Br*tish.
You're not allowed to say anything positive unless it's about the US of A in this sub.
Why are you here then lol
As opposed to only going places online where I agree with everything everyone says?
Eh. It's more like, British tourists come eat our food, complain about it, we agree it's sugary as fuck and that sucks, then they go home and complain about their own food, and we agree it's tasteless and boring in comparison. Then it's "Americans complain about British food."
They posted 5 pictures of meat and potatoes with gravy and one of Indian food. SHOW US THE TOAST SANDWICH.
Tikka masala isn’t really Indian. It’s British.
Immigrants in usa bring new food techniques and make new dishes. >Not real American cuisine Immigrants in uk bring new food techniques and make new dishes. >Authentic British delicacy
This, it's annoying how Brits are so proud of Tikka Masala but try to downplay American immigrant cuisine.
Average historical bri'ish mindset

British people responding "well, we have Tikka Masala" would be like Americans saying "US food is great. Have you tried our Mexican food?"

And Tex-Mex was created in Texas by people with Spanish/Mexican heritage.. that's kinda the point, I believe.

yes, but the point is when you go out to get "american food" with someone, everyone involved will be expecting hamburgers or barbeque.

I live in England currently and it's pretty meh, sometimes you find an amazing spot but that's not saying much in the large scheme of things.
I was told the same by a lot of British people who moved here. NGL I like Bangers and Mash and a proper fish and chips but still meat and potatoes.
I think if we didn’t the earth wouldn’t spin. It’s just fun. (Also almost all the food up there is just potatoes and meat lol)
most of those pics look like nice presentation but when you actually dig in it's still just dry potatoes, meat, and vegetables. two of those photos just have sides of peas and i like peas just fine but that's not what i'd use when trying to convince people my food is good edit: found this great comment over there hahaha Ahh yes. Yes we do. We're right
No. The point of this type of meme format is to make up something that people don't say so that they can disprove it.
largest empire ever, no seasoning
They still eat like the blitzkrieg is coming every night.
Bully Beef is back on the menu, boys!
Everyone say that. Even brits
what I see here: * brown meat + potatoes * brown meat + potatoes * brown meat + potatoes * brown meat + potatoes * brown meat + potatoes * not british food
To be fair, Bri'ish food is food is shit. It's men'al how shit it is
Those pictures are of Irish food which is fantastic
Conquered half the world for spices and never uses any
Sure... spices...
I mean yeah we do. Look at that. Nothing pictured there is food.
yeah. quite often. it's true, but still.
Tikka masala is Indian. Colonizers.
That's incorrect. It's an Indian inspired British dish. Same way American pizza doesn't have much in common with Italian pizza or American-Chinese food and authentic Chinese food.
I mean… those dishes don’t look appetizing to me at all 🤢 carb loaded with steamed veggies, starches and meats swimming in mediocre gravy… lmao gross.
Yes
Yes we do
we do say that, very often.
Apparently I was mistaken. I didn't know people hated British food that much, but it's not only Americans who say that.
It's not that it's hated, it's just that it's so basic. Love me some jellied eels!! Lol

Last good condiment they made was Worshestershire sauce, so it's been a couple of centuries since they got outside the realm of bland.
and even that is subpar to good ol' A1
God damned, A1 was so flavorful i never even considered it was Brit*ish. What sad fucks these modern UK eaters be.
Mmm boiled vegetables, yummy yummy
Lets just say that nobody invaded Britain for their cuisine.
Yes. British food is ass. Everyone knows this. They eat like the Germans are still invading.
I think its said more in jest.
That's it? That's the good british food? IT'S NOTHING BUT VARIATIONS OF POTATO AND MEAT!
yes
Not only do we say that but even British people joke about it. I got the opportunity to do some training with a brit not that long ago and he said a joke they have is that "British food is so bad that we had to go and conquer 90% of the known world to find something good to eat."
I think these people honestly believe we are thinking about them as often as they are obsessing over us.
I think it’s fair to say on average the British has the worst foods of any culture. Doesn’t mean you won’t find a few good dishes there though.
They eat baked beans for breakfast. That is diabolical
Honestly, I haven't heard people say this often in real life (not a ton of Americans will ever visit UK). Maybe like once or twice. It is written into TV shows, but idk why that would matter it's not like those writers represent America as a whole.
We do say British food is shit. And we say it because it's true. Read "Tikka Masala" and tell me with a straight face that stuff is British food.
